    1. [WVGREENB] RE: Hezekiah Lewis

    3. Carol, I am inclined to agree with you; and I would say that there are TWO Hezekiah's... Hezekiah that married Diana; would seem to have a birth date of about 1755; I base this on a number of things including most importantly the VINEY family ladies that married into the LEWISES... In addition, I highly suspect a VINEY - LEWIS connection in Hampshire County, Virginia prior to their common late 1700 arrival in Greenbrier County... As you know it is no small challenge trying to figure out these early 1800 & pre 1800 LEWISES of Greenbrier County... I too wish I could get more people digging on these Greenbrier Lewises... I can not seem to even figure out where the conjecture of Diana OLDNER came from... -----Original Message----- From: Carol.Benjamin [mailto:carol.benjamin@wdn.com] Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2001 5:55 PM To: WVGREENB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WVGREENB] Hezekiah Lewis Rachel Lewis was the daughter of Hezekiah Lewis and Diana. Oldner seems to be the name most often given for Diana, but I have not been able to find any documented sources. The children of Hezekiah Lewis were: Mary b. ca 1778 md Henry Cutlip Nancy b. ca 1780 md Joseph Perrine Rachel b. ca 1782 md Memucan Walker Elizabeth b. ca 1785 md John Knight John b. ca 1786 md Milly Lewis (d/o George & Phebe) George b. ca 1790 md Margaret Anderson Sarah b. 1791 md Mark Bruffy Lydia b. 1793 md George Lewis (s/o George & Phebe) James b. ca 1794 Margaret b. ca 1800 md John Dodrill Samuel b. ca 1802 md Mary Weaver Diana b. ca 1806 md William Crookshanks I strongly believe that Hezekiah and George (md Phebe) were brothers, not son and father. I have not seen any positive proof for either choice. But, children of Hezekiah md children of George & Phebe (making them first cousins). George (md Phebe) did have a son Hezekiah named in his will. However he also had statement in his will as to what should happen if any of his children should die before becoming of age to inherit; indicating that his children were young at the time of his death. Of course, in 1811 Hezekiah was married and had several children of his own. Would like to hear from anyone who has been better able to document this family.
