    1. [WVGREENB] Rootsweb (ancestry.com) Board changes.
    2. I'm beginning to find notes of complaint on the Rootsweb lists I'm in. below is a means of registering our dissatisfaction. It came fresh off this week's Rootsweb newsletters. I recommend that each of us 'not at all pleased' with the changes all voice our displeasure . Please cross post to 'your' other Rootsweb lists. Crystal MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, Executive Producer, RootsWeb.com Wow, what a week it has been. The messages have really been flying. In an effort to improve communication from RootsWeb to you (and vice versa), I will be sending out a message every so often which addresses current issues on the RootsWeb site. The RootsWeb staff has received lots of questions since the merger of Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com last summer, and I think there's a general need for our users to have regular information on RootsWeb's efforts to provide valuable services to the genealogical community. I also want to make a few comments about our new message boards system which was launched last week. We're grateful for the excellent feedback many of you have provided. The feedback has been generally positive when addressing the value of the combined datasets and the increased search functionality. However, I also recognize that any significant change requires some getting used to and may create some temporary inconvenience and frustration. I would like to address some of the concerns we've heard from you, the users. By popular request, we will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). For the benefit of the message board administrators, we are extending the board re-adoption deadline from July 15 to July 23. There is some confusion about RootsWeb's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it. As far as the message boards or any other RootsWeb features are concerned, if you're not happy, we're not happy. Please continue to give us your comments and concerns at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi or at [TWO-LINE URL] http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=RootsWeb-20- Topics-20-and-20-Localities.AdminCenter.suggestions In the meanwhile, experiment with the newly merged message boards. You might discover some previously buried information or make an invaluable connection that will enable you to leap over a proverbial genealogical brick wall problem that you had almost given up on solving. 3. I just added this file to my website: Index to all land sales by Gwinn/Guinns in Greenbrier co (was VA, now WV) through 1871 Transcribed from the grantor index by me - but I don't really know anything about these Gwinns, so don't ask me for more info on them. I was looking for somebody who didn't show up... There are lots of other names of buyers besides Gwinns in this file, so it's probably worth taking a look even if you're not researching Gwinns in Greenbrier. Scroll down to the bottom of the web page to find this database & others that may be of interest. Enjoy! --Holly ------------------- Holly Cochran email: info@hollyhockpress.com Hollyhock Press (publisher of Bath co VA area books) http://www.hollyhockpress.com/

    1. [WVGREENB] Hughart Genealogy
    2. Cindy Hughart
    3. Hi everyone, I'm researching the HUGHART family line. My brick wall has been to confirm with documentation the father of my ggggrandfather, Campbell HUGHART b. 1812, Adair Co., KY. I believe his family migrated to Kentucky from Virginia/West Virginia prior to his birth. >From "Adair Co, KY, Marriage Records, 1802-1840", compiled by Adair Co Genealogical Society: "HUGART, John and Polly BALDRIDGE. Attest William WEBSTER. Bond dated 24 Apr 1808." (I believe these are Campbell's parents) Is it possible that this John is the same one as that listed as the son of James HUGHART and Agnes JORDAN of VA/WV? The records I have show him marrying Jenny THOMPSON on 03 Aug 1792. Is it possible that Jenny died, John migrated to KY and married again to Mary(Polly) in 1808? In the same Adair Co. marriage records John is shown attesting to the marriages of Rebecca HUGHART and Elizabeth HUGHART. My Greenbrier information shows that John (son of James and Agnes) had sisters with these names. My John HUGHART died 11 Dec 1816 in Adair Co., KY. I can tell from the many small pieces of information that I've collected over the years that my Kentucky HUGHARTS are connected to these folks in VA/WV, but I would like to connect them to the correct family line. Thanks in advance for any help. Cynthia M. Hughart cydhug@pacbell.net

My paternal great-great grandfather was the Rev. James Anglin, born in Greenbrier Co. He lived in Clay County KY from about 1805. His wife was Jane Barrett, who was from TN. My paternal grandfather and grandmother were Abraham Phillips and Elizabeth Anglin. My father, who knew his Anglin-Phillips grandparents, said that the Rev. James Anglin was born in Greenbrier Co. [VA] 1780s, and that the father of Rev.James Anglin was M. J. Anglin of Greenbrier Co. and that the mother of Rev. James Anglin was Mary Miller, also from Greenbrier Co. 1. [WVGREENB] John McClenachan - 1760s
    2. Michael Radcliff
    3. Can anyone tell me anything about John McClenachan of Greenbrier (?) County during the 1760s? I am trying to run down information on the James Burns that shows in this passage from the March 23, 1765 entry in Chalkley's Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement in Virginia: (307) "Sarah Cartright and James Burns, servant of John MeClenachan, cured of venerial disease. (Many of same.)" If he had servants, he was obviously not a poor man; I specifically would like to know where and when he obtained James Burns for his servant, what line of work McClenachan was in (planter?) and where he was from and when he came to this country. 1. [WVGREENB] Greenbrier Co. Native has Navy Ship Named after him
    2. Valerie & Tommy Crook
    3. From the Charleston Daily Mail: <http://www.dailymail.com/news/News/2001061218/> Navy names ship after W.Va. soldier Medal of Honor winner died fighting in Korea Kristen Comer/Daily Mail Staff <kristencomer@dailymail.com> Tuesday June 12, 2001; 12:15 PM CLINTONVILLE -- Nearly 50 years ago, a Greenbrier County native was killed in the Korean War and earned a Medal of Honor posthumously. This year, his country honors him again. The U.S. Navy has named a new cargo ship for the West Virginia soldier. Christened the USNS Pomeroy in San Diego, the ship measures 950 feet in length and has a cargo-carrying capacity of more than 380,000 square feet. The navy has slated its launch for early fall. The ship honors the memory of Army Private First Class Ralph E. Pomeroy, born and raised near Quinwood. Pomeroy's brother Curtis said his family appreciates the recognition. "It was wonderful," he said. "But it seemed like it was a long time coming. He gave his life for his country." Pomeroy's sister, Rose Crow, has spent most of her life in Greenbrier County. "I thought naming the ship after Ralph was really great," she said. "I'm looking forward to watching its launch." According to a Navy press release, Pfc. Pomeroy was killed in action Oct. 15, 1952, near Kumbwa, Korea. Pomeroy, 22, protected his platoon by manning a machine gun at the end of a trench. When the enemy attacked, they concentrated their fire on Pomeroy's position. Even after he was severely wounded, he continued operating his machine gun. Finally, his gun mount was so damaged that he picked up his weapon and used it as a club in hand-to-hand combat. He was mortally wounded soon after. According to the press release, Pomeroy's "brave actions cost him his life but enabled his platoon to hold their position." Pfc. Pomeroy was wounded once before, not long after he arrived in Korea. The family didn't learn this until after his death. "He never told us he was wounded," Crow said. "He didn't want us to worry." A bridge in Greenbrier County, a barracks in Fort Rucker, Ala., another barracks in Seoul, Korea, and an armory in Rainelle already bear the soldier's name. The Navy announced the naming of the new ship about a year ago, Curtis Pomeroy said. Crow's husband, Charles, a retired Air Force tech sergeant, said he grew up only a mile from the Pomeroys. "Ralph was just an all-around good boy, a well-liked individual," he said. Rose Crow agreed. "We all loved him growing up," she said. "He was really a great guy." Pfc. Pomeroy was one of nine children. Crow said most of her siblings will travel to South Carolina in the fall to watch the ship's launch. "We appreciate everything done in Ralph's honor," she said. Curtis Pomeroy added, "Our family is a really close-knit group." Pfc. Pomeroy worked for a coal company near Quinwood before he joined the Army. He was an avid sports fan and played baseball, basketball and football in high school. The USNS Pomeroy, constructed by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company and christened in March, is one of the Navy's largest ships. Military Sealift Command will operate the USNS Pomeroy and its seven sister ships. These ships will transport fuel, equipment and supplies for the military and may perform missions for the U.S. Department of Defense. The ship will have a crew of nine members. A room in the ship will be dedicated to Pfc. Pomeroy's memory. The Navy plans to display photographs of Pomeroy and his family, a Bible and the U.S. and West Virginia flags. Pfc. Pomeroy is buried in the At the End of the Trail Cemetery in Clintonville, not far from the place where he was born and raised. Writer Kristen Comer can be reached a 348-4886.
