My 3rd great grandfather was Memucan Walker (1764 - 1836) who married Rachel Lewis, was a Rev. War vet, one of the first school teachers in Greenbrier Co. and died there in 1836. He was born in Lunenburg Co. VA, lived in SC., married once in MD and perhaps an earlier marriage before that. His son Joel and several grandsons, among them Sylvanus, Benjamin, Joel McPherson "Mack", and my ggf William Washington Walker, moved to the Braxton, Nicholas, Clay area around Keeners Ridge, Strange Creek, Dille (all very close, just where the counties join) about 1870. A recent DNA testing showed that we have a common ancester with several other Walker families that takes the line back to the 1600s in VA. Have been looking for a will, burial place, or any other information on Memucan Walker. Do you have any suggestions? Would appreciate any help. The Walker Reunion is at Summersville on the 2nd Sunday in August. Everyone welcome. Brenda-- In an abstract, they don't usually say what it is that is going to someone. They just name the people that are getting something. This book is not always accurate. You should probably look at LDS film to see the actual record. Maybe you'd find more to help you. dh Elwyn Dillon wrote: > Donna, > This is what I have. Brenda: When you make a request for information, you might want to include some dates, such as the date of death of ________ Morrow. I have a book "Greenbrier County Deeds & Wills 1750-1833" and there are a number of listings in the index for the surname of MORROW. I simply do not have the time to look up each one and read who left who what. This is just a suggestion and it might assist you in getting the information you seek. If your ancestors migrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia as mine did, you may be interested in the new Pennsylvania archives on-line. So far the focus seems to be war records. I found my Bittenbenders in the Revolutionary War card file. Good hunting, Lynne Hundley ===================================================================== NEW PENNSYLVANIA ONLINE RESOURCE [info from Ancestry.com newsletter] ===================================================================== HARRISBURG, Pa., July 3. On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) Executive Director Brent D. Glass today announced Pennsylvanians now -- for the first time -- can access historical records through the PA PowerPort. The Archives Records Information Access System (ARIAS) will enable Pennsylvanians and researchers from around the world to utilize the tremendous resources of the Pennsylvania State Archives right from their homes or local libraries. The records can be accessed through the PA PowerPort at http://www.state.pa.us or directly at the Commission's site at http://www.phmc.state.pa.us "With the click of a mouse, students, teachers, family researchers and history buffs will be able to view online historical records maintained at the State Archives in Harrisburg," Glass said. "Our goal is to provide easy, cost-free access to historical records that constitute our most valuable window to the past. We think of it as the `Digital State Archives.'" Currently, ARIAS offers approximately 200,000 images relating to the participation of Pennsylvanians in the Revolutionary War, Spanish- American War and World War I. The Revolutionary War records are arranged alphabetically by the surname of each soldier, with information on service in the Pennsylvania Militia, Pennsylvania Line, and the Navy; the name and rank of soldier; active or inactive duty; county of residence; battalion in which served; and the archival record from which the information was extracted. More than 300,000 Civil War and Mexican Border Campaign service card images also are being loaded into the system. Eventually, millions of digitized records, ranging from 19th-century county birth, death and marriage dockets to collections of photographs illustrating every aspect of the Pennsylvania experience, will be added. "Genealogists are hungry for access to records such as these," said James Beidler, executive director of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. "The beauty of the resources found in ARIAS is that they will lead researchers to the original source documents, which is what every family historian yearns to find about his or her ancestors." Sandra: Fanny Bell Bare was my great aunt. She was married four times, but I don't recall that she was married to a Hefner--I'll have to check. Her first husband was Bernie Eades and her last husband was a Longanacre (sp?). My mother has some great stories about her and her children. Good Morning folks, I am trying to contact Alice from the Spencer line and know she belongs to this list. I don't usually send request like this through the list so please except my apoligies. Valerie and the rest of you good folks of Greenbrier, I have been away for a while due to family illness. I am now trying to get my head back together :) and get back into the swing of things. I am still searching for Mary COOK second wife of James SPENCER ( married 1833 Greenbrier) Does anybody know her parentage or what become of her. She took over a family of 11 children of James first wife Elizabeth HOPENSTAL and then had 9 more children of her own. Not much is written about this second family. My line followes Washington SPENCER, who married Marietta WILLIAMS and went west to Lewis Co. Washington; his son John JONES SPENCER who married Wilmoth Hatta BENNETT; their daughter Lola Lavernia "grandma Vernie" who married Ervin Walker COLLINS SR. James moved into Nicholas Co. or the border changed. He died in Nicholas Co. but nothing is known about Mary COOK. He lived with his sons from the first marriage up until his death. Any help appreciated. brenda Collins Dillon

I'm beginning to find notes of complaint on the Rootsweb lists I'm in. below is a means of registering our dissatisfaction. It came fresh off this week's Rootsweb newsletters. I recommend that each of us 'not at all pleased' with the changes all voice our displeasure . Please be sure to address your comments to Mr. Jake Gehring. Please cross post to 'your' other Rootsweb lists. Crystal MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, Executive Producer, RootsWeb.com Wow, what a week it has been. The messages have really been flying. In an effort to improve communication from RootsWeb to you (and vice versa), I will be sending out a message every so often which addresses current issues on the RootsWeb site. The RootsWeb staff has received lots of questions since the merger of Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com last summer, and I think there's a general need for our users to have regular information on RootsWeb's efforts to provide valuable services to the genealogical community. I also want to make a few comments about our new message boards system which was launched last week. We're grateful for the excellent feedback many of you have provided. The feedback has been generally positive when addressing the value of the combined datasets and the increased search functionality. However, I also recognize that any significant change requires some getting used to and may create some temporary inconvenience and frustration. I would like to address some of the concerns we've heard from you, the users. By popular request, we will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). For the benefit of the message board administrators, we are extending the board re-adoption deadline from July 15 to July 23. There is some confusion about RootsWeb's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it. As far as the message boards or any other RootsWeb features are concerned, if you're not happy, we're not happy. Please continue to give us your comments and concerns at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi or at [TWO-LINE URL] http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=RootsWeb-20- Topics-20-and-20-Localities.AdminCenter.suggestions In the meanwhile, experiment with the newly merged message boards. You might discover some previously buried information or make an invaluable connection that will enable you to leap over a proverbial genealogical brick wall problem that you had almost given up on solving. I'm looking for my relatives George Atchinson MCCLELLAN (born 2 Oct 1859; died: 6 Feb 1945 in Greenbrier Co, West Virginia) and his wife, Emma Elizabeth (nee BOALICH) MCCLELLAN (born: 30 Apr 1862; died: 1950 in Nallen, Fayette Co, West Virginia). Both are buried in the End of the Trail Cemetery near Lewisburg, West Virginia. I need obituaries for George and Emma, the location within Greenbrier Co that George died, the exact death date for Emma, and photos of their headstones at End of the Trail cemetery. I'm new to the list but some of the names in the archives are familiar. I am interested in pinpointing what happened to the children of Andrew Kincaid. His will was made in 1811 in Greenbrier Co. Wife: Mary, Children: Andrew, John, Robert, James, Thomas, Elizabeth Miller, Ann (Richard) Garten, Mary Wyatt, Margaret Slone, Sarah Caldwell. I come from Elizabeth and James Miller through their daughter Mary. James was the son of James and Margaret (Boyd?) Miller (Verla you skipped a generation). James and Elizabeth lived in what is now Monroe Co. then moved to TN then to MO. Andrew's son James m Eliz. Dean. He lived and died on the Jackson River, never making the move to Greenbrier. Sarah m Kincaid Caldwell and ended up in MO. John m Alice Dean. What I don't know is what happened to Andrew, Robert, Thomas, Mary, and Margaret. There are a lot of Kincaids in the Co. so it is confusing. Is anyone on the list from my "missing" children's line. Sue in NewportGet more from the Web.
