Hello Fellow Researchers, It has been a while since I posted anything to this list. I know there are probably new commers that have never heard of me and then there are those probably wondering where I have been. Last December my husband was dianosed with 4th stage lung cancer and he passed away in May. I didn't do much while he was so ill but take the time to spend with him. When I returned I discovered the server my site was on had shut down the system to upload and download so there was no way to update. The old site is still floating but will one day just disappear. The past few months I have been thankful I had such a wonderful hobby as genealogy to keep my mind busy and help me cope. I have made so many friends in this and even found some lost relatives. I have moved my site over to angelfire.com and will leave the new URL at the end.I hope you enjoy it as much as I have at putting it together. Most of my family roots are in your part of West Virginia. Look through the files and feel free to email me if you see any information that you know is wrong. I am only human and don't doubt that there could be some mistakes. I am thankful for those that have shared their information with me and I enjoy sharing back. While you are there please drop me a note in the guestbook and let me know what surnames you are searching for. My new email address is : bj04@mediaone.net Ward Reguards, Brenda Collins Dillon http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/dillon1944/
Hello Everyone: I am trying to find the e-mail address of the son of Mary Thomas Crismore who wrote the book The Crismore Family (1968). It is my understanding that he has written another book on the Crismore Family. My mother-in-law, Margaret Crismore Bishop Curry told me that he had sent her a note a number of years ago advising that a second book was out on the Crismore Family and was for sale. If someone can help me get in touch with him, I would appreciate it. Gerri bish57@acd.net

Hi all, I am new to this list. Am working on the family of Arnold & Mary (Runyon) Ford who were married in Rockingham County, VA on 28 April 1794. I can find no record of this couple, after their marriage record, but have found an Arnold & Mary Ford in Greenbriar County in this same time frame. It appears that this Arnold died in the 1820s but that Mary was still living into the 1840s. I am trying to determine if this couple is my family and, if so, to identify their children. Norman
I found this entry in the Nichols 1850 Census Index (VA/WV): WALTON GREENBERRY # 386 T: 43RD DISTRICT W435 WALTON HIRAM # 349 T: 43RD DISTRICT W435 then in the census it's ... WALTON Granberry 17 M . Farmer . Ireland . . In the Greenbrier Co Marriages, 1782-1900 WALTON, Greenburg & Hannah DAVIS 3 Apr 1852; (lic) I think this is my gggrandfather known as Berriman WALTON. They had a son named William Carey - don't know if there were other siblings. His parents died when he was small and raised by an aunt who was married to a COOK. Does anyone know anything about these WALTON's or DAVIS family? Thanks, Jeanne .
Hello List I want to thank you for your response to my recent posting to Greenbrier rootsweb list about the pictures. I have been bombarded with requests and suggestions. Some of these pictures have found a home with relatives already and the ones I can't find families for will be donated to the Greenbrier Co. Historical Society. One person that contacted me about Price photos was named Sterling and when I tried to reply it came back --srprice3@sc.rr.com--"The user's email name is not found." Sterling, please try and contact me again either through this list or personally. I have a lot of Price photos. My blood connection to the Shawver/Price line is through the McClung line. Samuel (Sam Patch) McClung and Margaret Elizabeth McClung (maiden name) had two daughters, Nancy Jane McClung 1848-1902 (my Great grandmother, who married 1869 Richard Garrot Manspile (later changed by some to Mansfield) 1843-1916 and her sister Josephine McClung who married 1884 Lycurgus Shawver. He was the son of Robert S. Shawver ca 1796-1871 and his second wife Cynthia Jones. Lycurgus and Josephine McClung Shawver had three children, Lennah, Elliott and Lula. Lula Shawver never married, Elliott married Dolly Zopp but never had children. Lennah 1885-1973 married in 1906 Augustus Allen Price 1883-1963. He was the son of Joseph D. Price 1842-1926 and Margaret C. Remley 1842-1917. To make it more complicated Heneretta Price 1871-1922, daughter of Joseph D. Price and Margaret C. Remley and a sister to Augustus, married my Great Uncle Archibald Kenton Kessler. There are few of their descendants left and this is why I have ended up with all these pictures. Again if you connect to this family in any way or have a relative that is on the list I posted, please tell me who it is so I can send you the picture. I can't bare to discard them. Karen Kessler Cottrill WV Kessler/Kesler Family Historian I am making no claims that the above information is correct. This is being given as personal information and not documented.

Dear list About 2 years ago I inherited 1000s of pictures from a distant relative who had resided all her life in or near Big Clear Creek, Big Mt, Duo, Rupert and Kessler, in Greenbrier Co., WV. She died with no children, nieces or nephews so all these pictures were given to my cousin. He didn't want the pictures and knew that I was the family historian so he gave them to me. I glanced at them and knew that I had a job ahead of me sorting and trying to figure out who was who from OUR family, let alone all these other people so I put them all in a box and left them until I retired and moved this year never looking at them again. Last week I decided I'd better tackle these pictures before something happened to me and no one else could identify them. I was very lucky in most instances that she or someone had written the names of the person on the backs of about half of them. Out of the other half not written on, I could identify myself but there are an equal amount that I can't ID and it is a shame. Some of them are wonderful pictures of families and gatherings and lot of pictures of children. I want to keep some of them...for some reason there are doubles and triples of some pictures.....and share the rest with anyone that can relate to these people. These pictures range from the late 1800s to the 1980s... I'd say a hundred years worth of pictures, most all in good condition. If you can relate to any of the following names please contact me at KesslerWV@aol.com I will be happy to give away any of these pictures to anyone sending me a SASE for me to mail them in. Hal, The marriages to which you refer were performed by Elder John Alderson, Jr.. He succeeded his father John Alderson, Sr. as the pastor of the Linville Creek Baptist Church. Around 1776 he relocated to Greenbriar County, VA (now WV) and founded a Baptist Church there. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of Greenbriar County. The records you see were recorded by John in his own private ledger and, as you say, most of the records include only the names of the couple being married and the date. A small number of the marriages include a location but none include any other information of any kind. Some of the marriages appear to have been performed in Rockingham County, some in Shenandoah, some in Augusta and some in Greenbriar. If there were corresponding civil records (licenses/bonds) for these marriages they (to the best of my knowledge) have not survived. Were it not for Elder Alderson's notebook, written record of most of these marriages would be non-existent. Another place to obtain a copy of Elder Alderson's records is "Virginia Valley Records" by John W. Wayland. That book includes a chapter (p153-163) about both John Alderson, Sr. & Jr. and includes these marriage records. For additional information on Alderson, Jr., check out "History of the Baptists in Virginia" by Robert Baylor Semple. The book was originally published in 1810, when Alderson, Jr. was still living. It was revised in 1894 and was reprinted in 1976. Also, check out the rootsweb.com site for Greenbriar Co., WV or look at almost any history of Greenbriar County. I know this isn't what you had hoped for on the marriage record in question but that may be all that there is. There is a new website that was just started for researchers of the Walker family. Memucan Walker 1764- 1836 has been tied through recent DNA testing to seven other branches of the family who share a common ancestor with the connection most likely in Virginia between the mid 1600s and the Revolutionary War, in which Memucan was a soldier at the age of 16. Memucan was born in Lunenburg Co. VA, lived in South Carolina and Maryland, then came to Greenbrier Co. (W)VA where he was one of the first schoolteachers. He married there for the second (or it may have been the third ?) time. With this marriage in 1808 to Rachel Lewis and with later marriages of his descendants, the Walker family is connected to a large number of early West Virginia pioneering families. These include: Lewis Clendenin Boggs Mollohan Dodrill Hamric Gregory Cutlip Riffle Taylor Bragg Hoover Stephenson Brown And many others. The Hughart Genealogy What I Know August 2001 Cynthia M. Hughart My great grandfather, Samuel Curtis HUGHART was born Dec. 21, 1872 in Warren or Madison County, Iowa and married Mary Joan HUMERICK. Their children were Earl, Zeta, and Calvin. Samuel's brother Charles married Mary Joan's sister Emma HUMERICK. My great, great grandfather, Young Alexander HUGHART was born in Adair County, KY in 1845. He moved to Iowa in 1860 with a large group of people including his father, Rev. Campbell HUGHART (United Brethren of Christ) who had strong anti slavery sentiments. Some of the other surnames of families leaving Kentucky with them were: BLAIR, BREEDING, ARMSTRONG, TURK, CARTER, and others. Young Alexander HUGHART married Hannah Maria SHANNON and their children were Samuel, Edna, and Charles. Young Alexander's sister Mary Eliza HUGHART married Hannah's brother, Samuel Enoch SHANNON. Campbell HUGHART was born in Adair County On Dec. 3, 1812. He married Mary Ann BLAIR (b. Dec 3, 1812) on Dec. 17, 1835. Campbell is listed as Rev. in the United Brethren of Christ Church. Campbell died in Iowa in 1890 and Mary in 1901. Their children were: Sarah Jane; James Milton; John Blair; Young Alexander; Mary Eliza; Melvina Elizabeth; Eliza Almarise; William Marion; and a Belzona is listed but I believe she is actually Sarah Jane's daughter. What I don't have primary documentation for - but these are some of the possibilities: I'm pretty sure that Campbell had two siblings: Young HUGHART( b. June 17, 1809) who married Nancy CHAMBERS, Rhoda BUTLER, and Sarah FAULKNER with whom he had a son named John WISDOM HUGHART. Campbell's sister, Sarah HUGHART (b. Dec. 8, 1814) married John DENUMBRON. If this is true, it seems that their mother was a Mary (Polly) Clark BALDRIDGE/ALDRICH born in Rutherford County, NC c. 1795. One source cites her as the daughter of Agnes HUGHART ( But another source just says "daughter of Agnes"?). And this source also lists Mary as the first purchaser at the HUGART estate sale in Jan. 1817 of a John HUGART who died in 1816. Mary married James WISDOM on Aug. 5, 1817, and they have at least 6 children together: E.L.; Kathy Ann; Joseph S.; Mary C.; Elizabeth Jane; William L. In the 1850 census of Adair County Mary is shown age 55 with James age 68, and two of their children, but by 1860 she is no longer shown with James so I presume that she died between 1850 and 1860. John HUGHART shows up in the Green County, KY Census of 1800 and the Adair County, KY Census of 1810, but not in 1820 which makes sense given the information above. There is a John on the 1802 & 1810 Adair Co. tax lists; 1804 land survey. A John HUGART was appointed Justice of Peace in Adair Oct. 5, 1807. From Green Co. Deed Book: John HUGART of Green Co., KY appoints Wm. HUGART of Greenbrier Co., VA/WV his Power of Attorney..May 19, 1799. But there are other John's in KY at that time and a John in Greenbrier; I'm sure he ties into the Greenbrier VA/WV family but I can't figure out which one. I have a copy of the will of a James HUGHART of Greenbrier dated 1789. In it he lists a con, John among many other children and a wife, Agnes. I have a copy of another will of a James HUGGART (August Co., VA) dated 1767 in which he mentions a son, James, a wife, Agnes and others, but I can't read all of it. There were several James Hugharts over the years and at least a couple o! f Johns, so it's a matter of tying down "the one" with documentation. So far most of my sources are secondary. At least twice people have sent me information that Mary Baldridge's husband was Young HUGHART.?? What I need: Birth records for Campbell, Young, and/or Sarah HUGHART. Marriage record for Mary C. and John Hughart. Birth record for John Hughart probably in Greenbrier Co., VA/WV. Any information on Mary Clark Baldridge and James Wisdom's family lines. HUGHART/HUGGARD/HUGART/HAGGARD
