    1. Re: [WVGREENB] Indian Raids in Greenbrier County
    2. Sara Patton
    3. From what I read in Otis K. Rice's History of Greenbrier County, 1986, Indian raids continued in the Greenbrier area throughout the Rev War period. The most well-known being the attack on Fort Donnally in 1778. As late as March 3, 1781, there was an attack on William Week (apparently in Greenbrier Co.) Hard to tell from the book if the attacks were within today's county boundaries or within the county as then organized which of course included all of Kanawha Co and more, though the author seems to differentiate between the area along the Kanawha and Greenbrier. At any rate, residents of Greenbrier Co continued to worry about Indian attacks until Anthony Wayne's defeat of the Indians at Fallen Timbers and the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. 1. [WVGREENB] New Pioneer Family History website
    2. michael henline
    3. I want to thank everyone for their interest in the new Pioneer Family History Preservation Society website. Everyone who has requested membership has been processed. We have about two hundred members and we are currently going through some lessons on the site on how to view and post photographs. I don't have the site statistics in front of me but off the top of my head I believe we have about a hundred photos posted (mostly Webster, Clay, and Nicholas county families), more than a dozen family trees, and I can't even begin to count the surnames that are represented. I believe that the site will grow rapidly as the members learn how to use the various features. At myfamily.com we have 205MB of storage space which is enough room for about 1000 photos (more space can be added as it's needed), we also have two members who have shown interest in combining their family sites with the Pioneer site, which should also add a lot of content from counties which are currently under represented. If you are already a member at the site I encourage you to help the site grow by inviting your family and friends to participate, as well as sharing your photos and research with the rest of the members (all content posted remains the property of the owner and can be removed at any time). This is your chance to preserve your family history online without having to learn website design and all those computer skills necessary to set-up a site. If you aren't a member at the site and are interested in a fully interactive site that allows you to easily connect with other researchers, post your family tree, share photos, research tips, old letters etc. just send an email containing your first and last name to Willisdeal@myfamily.com The site is free and open to everyone with a genealogical or historical interest in Central WV and the origins of families who settled there. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [WVGREENB] New pioneer website
    2. michael henline
    3. My apologies for a couple of errors in my previous email announcing the new pioneer website. First, the site is free and open to everyone, just send an email to willisdeal@myfamily.com requesting a username and password. Second, the name of the site is Pioneer Family History Preservation Society, without the West Virginia in front of the name. The main focus of the site is West Virginia, primarily the central counties. But our pioneer ancestors migrated from many different counties of WV, and earlier VA, Ken, NC, and other areas, so we don't limit our discussions and research to just one area. We also have a very broad definition of 'pioneer', and welcome the participation of any families who have ever lived in the central WV region. We expect this site to be a great resource for historians and family researchers. This site differs from genweb and other county sites (most of which are excellent sites by themselves) in that the members interact with each other. Each member is able to post photographs, gedcoms, old letters, marriage licenses, census extracts, and just about anything you can think of. This eliminates the need to filter your material through a webmaster, who may or may not have time to post your content. Members also have the ability to add comments to any content that is posted, so if a photo of an unidentified person is posted other members can add names or biographical data. This system greatly increases the chances of making connections with other researchers. A similar site dedicated exclusively to Webster co has lead to many connections for the members that they missed through the typical mailing lists and county sites. In fact, at the Webster co site many people have seen for the first time photos of their great-grandparents, and others in their family. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [WVGREENB] New website for West Virginia Pioneers
    2. michael henline
    3. The Pioneer Family History Preservation Society has created a new website at myfamily.com. We expect this site to help serve the genealogical needs of central WV family researchers. This fully interactive, password protected site will allow members to communicate, share research, photos, post queries, family trees, and much more. Success of the site depends on member's participation. Members post their own content and are encouraged to cite sources so information can be easily verified. Members are expected to participate and those who fail to visit the site on a regular basis (at LEAST every two months) will be deleted. This is a family friendly site and monitored so inappropriate content or behavior will not be tolerated. Membership is open to everyone and while our main focus will be central WV we do not limit the scope of the site just to that geographic area and we encourage members to explore their early families who migrated from other areas of West Virginia and the US. To join the West Virginia Pioneer Family Preservation Society website email willisdeal@myfamily.com and include your first and last name. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [WVGREENB] Memucan Walker family
    2. Kaufman Real Estate
    3. I will be doing a quick trip to some of the southern WV courthouses, probably Summers, Monroe, Greenbrier, and Raleigh Counties, the first part of this week, leaving by noon tomorrow, Sunday. Any suggestions about courthouses or other sources would be appreciated. Will be looking for the Walker family. Memucan was born in Lunenburg Co. VA. lived in SC and MD, was a Rev. War Vet. and one of the first school teachers in Greenbrier Co. The family seems to have moved around within different counties, probably some not actual moves but new counties being formed. Memucan's son Joel was a member of Lick Creek Baptist Church where he was kicked out in 1849 for "strong drink". Where in Summers County would this have been? Another son of Memucan was Hezekiah Walker. Charles Emerson Walker who was a Baptist Minister in Beckley, Raleigh Co. for about 30 years in about 1930-1950 was a grand son of Joel Walker, and son of William Washington Walker. Joel and some of his adult sons moved to the Keeners Ridge, Dille, Strange Creek area where Braxton, Clay and Nicholas join about 1871 Memucan Walker, 1764-1836 his wife Rachel Lewis Son Joel Walker, 1809 Greenbrier Co. - 1889 Braxton Co. wife Lucinda Fuel Joel's sons: William Washington Walker wife Ruhama Jane Mollohan Benjamin Walker wife Francis Matheny, her mother was a Fuel Sylvanus Walker, Baptist minister, wife was a Boggs Joel McPherson "Mack" Walker wife was also a Boggs, sister. A 3rd great grandson of Memucan Walker took part in a DNA testing project that found eight Walker branches with a common ancestor, probably going back to a William Walker who came to America about 140. There is a new website with a Family Tree Maker chart. Will add it at the bottem. Some of the material on it is not proved. Thanks for any help. 3. Hi, saw a mention of Davis and thought I would try mine again. Sarah (Sally) Davis was probably born c 1800-1805 and it seems likely she was born in Greenbrier. She married Samuel Flack there 15 August 1822, and after bearing several children, died by 1834, as Sam married Catherine Rookstool. As with many other researchers, I have a family tradition of being told we were part Indian, in my case through my great grandmother Ledonia Persinger, who said her mother was a full blood Indian. Well, her mother was Sarah Davis, so she has always been someone very important to my search, and the, hardest to discover who she was! 3. Hello List, I am looking for any information about MCDOWELL and DAVIS families who were early settlers in Greenbrier or Monroe County. William MCDOWELL moved to a region around Second Creek sometime before 1750, and died there about 1796. His son Archibald MCDOWELL was born 1750-55, married Catherine DAVIS in 1780, and he too farmed in the region until his death in 1813. I would very much like to hear from anyone who is interested in or has information about these families. Any info, advice, suggestions will be gratefully accepted. Thanks, David
