    1. [WVGREENB] Dr. John Fleshman Montgomery
    2. Linda Johnston
    3. Greenbrier County has lost one of its outstanding citizens. Dr. John Fleshman Montgomery passed away Friday, July 12, 2002. Services will be held today at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg.at 11:00 a.m. His obituary states: "Dr. John Fleshman Montgomery, 96, of Lewisburg, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Grestone. Dr. Montgomery was a well-known educator and historian. Dr. Montgomery held membership in the Old Stone Presbytrian Church, where he served as ruling elder for 35 years, a well as teaching Sunday school and serving as superintendent of Sunday school. Dr. Montgomery had several writings and publications to his credit. He was the recipient of Lewisburg's Outstanding Citizen of the Year and served as President of the Lewisburg Rotary Club. Dr. Montgomery received his early education in a two-room school in Grassy Meadows known as the Lewis School, and attended Greenbrier Military School, earning the position of commissioned officer. In 1924, he taught at the Lewis school before enrollinin and graduation from Hampden Sydney. He received his MA degree from the University of Southern California. He returned to Greenbrier County in 1932, and served as principal of Williamsburg High and Elementary Schools. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University and came back to Greenbrier County again to serve as principal of the Greenbrier College for Women. Dr. Montgomery married Edith Mary Rothwell in 1931, who preceded him in death in 1973. They purchased the James Withrow Home, an antebelum house which was considered the grandfathr of brick homes in Lewisburg and was built in 1818. It was in this home that they reared five children.........." Dr. John, as we affectionately called him, was active with the Greenbrier Historical Society. He was also secretary of the Fleshman family association for many, many years. He will be sorely missed by many. He was to have been honored for his many years of service to the family at the Fleshman family reunion on Aug. 3 and 4. We will still honor him and hope that many of the local Fleshman family descendants will attend the reunion in memory of him. Linda Johnston ljohnston@nethawk.com

    1. Re: [WVGREENB] Frederick HOOVER
    2. Hi Vivian-- The Huber/Hoover line you are seeking "appears" to be from York Co., PA. I've been researching a few of the York Co., PA families that appear to have gone to Greenbrier & Monroe Co.: Holtzapple, Wentz (aka- Wantz & Vance) and have just started collecting some Hoover/Huber info. in the hopes of clearing up some of the muddy puddles. Maria Margaret Holtzapple is a d/o Erasmus & Christina Rauscher Holtzapple (Holtzapfel, Holsapple). She was b. 30 June 1762 and bt. 4 Aug 1762 per the records of Christ E.L. Church; her sponsor was Bernhard Holtzinger. In her father, Erasmus' will, she is mentioned as a daughter, "Margred now the wife of Frederick Hoober". It would also appear that a few of her siblings and their families also went to VA ( Shock, Klingman). Margaret's sister, Anna Maria, was md. to Philip Wentz and two of their sons, Adam & Jacob, also went to the Greenbrier/Monroe Co. area. A few months ago, I was extracting some of the early tax records for York Co. (Dover, Manchester Twps.) and found a record for Frederick Hoover, who is listed as having moved to Virginia; can't find the record right this minute, but it was definitely pre-1810; perhaps as early as 1801. I have gathered various info. on these lines, but haven't yet had the time to sort thru it all. Cathy

    1. [WVGREENB] Jacob and Elizabeth MAY
    2. Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr.
    3. On the 1870 census, Jacob and Elizabeth May, both about 70, were living in Monroe County. They were originally from Rockingham Co., VA. I have not been able to find them on the 1880 census. On the 1880 census, three of their adult children, Martha, Nancy, and Zachary Taylor May, all of who were born between 1843 and 1849, and who were still single were living together in Blue Sulphur, Greenbrier County. Based on this I am working on the assumption that Jacob and Elizabeth died between 1870 and 1880, most likely in Monroe or Greenbrier County. On the Monroe County GenWeb site I found the following MAY references in the Monroe Border/Watchman surname index. 17291 1877 Aug 03 3 5 May, Jacob 17292 1877 Jun 01 1 6 May, Sophie 17293 1877 Jul 27 1 4 May; Mr. I will appreciate a lookup from anyone who has access to these newspapers to see why these MAYs were mentioned in the papers. Also, any help I can get in checking the Monroe County deaths records for the period 1870 - 1880 to see if the deaths of either one or both of these people was reported will be appreciated. I am especially interested in learning the names of their parents if they were reported. Any other information that relates to this couple will also be appreciated. Also, any further information on Martha, Nancy and Zachary Taylor May will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim Messersmith Rockville, VA
