    1. [WVGREENB] FLESHMAN REUNION
    2. Linda Johnston
    3. Just a friendly reminder to all of the FLESHMAN descendants out there, the reunion is this coming weekend in Lewisburg, WV. An information center will be at the Fort Savannah Motel. We will be having dinner at the Old Stone Church on Saturday evening and a picnic (potluck) on Sunday. Tours and much genealogical information will be available, too. Please try to attend for at least part of the event. I'm coming from Michigan and would like to meet as many cousins as possible. Linda Johnston ljohnston@nethawk.com

    2. CORRECTION: It should read that JOHN B. PATTESON/PATTERSON married Ruth Dozer. James Philander was his father. It is thought that James,Sr. was his grandfather. KIN; The Pattesons of Carnifax Ferry. (Proof here). Alice in FL

    1. [WVGREENB] Patterson/Patteson
    2. Can someone help me? I am trying to contact someone who is kin to or has information on this family: James B. Patterson, who married Ruth Dozer. He was born in Gbr. Co. in 1839, son of James Philander and Sarah (Bransford) Patteson, of Buckingham Co., VA. She was born in Cumberland Co., VA. In that area the original name is spelled Patteson, without an R. Ruth Dozer, daughter of David and Frances Dozer, was born in 1842 in Fayette Co. No other info. except this from 1850 census. John B. lived in the Kessler Cross Roads area, and was kin to the Pattesons who lived in the home now the Patteson Museum at Carnifax Ferry. A brother of James Philander Patteson was Henry Christian Patteson who lived in Appomattox Co., VA. It is believed that their parents were James and Sarah Patteson of Buckingham Co., but it was one of the 'burned counties' so proof is not available. I f anyone has any information concerning John B. Patteson, his family in WV, or his descendants, contact would be very much appreciated. Have a lot of background information on this one-time wealthy and influential family of Buckingham, including siblings of John B. Alice in FL

I had an e-mail about a year ago that had funny mottos for bumper stickers for every state. West Virginia's was "We're all family. Really!!!" 1. [WVGREENB] Questions on Property Tax Records
    2. 1. How were the personal property taxes actually collected in Virginia Counties 1787 - 1850? 2. Did the tax man physically collect at the property owner's home, or, were the taxes sometimes (or, always) paid in the tax man's office? 3. What adult males would not be on those lists? 4. What would constitute grounds for exemption from tax? Would something like extreme old age (90+) be grounds? Would it take a special authorization and, if so, from whom?

It is an online book that focuses on the American Indian component of Melungeons. Nine authors, including myself, contributed articles to the book. A few of the articles you may have seen, but many others you have not. Some of the people who contributed to the work: Jack, Cindy, Helen. Others you may not know like Mr. Pollard who shares an article of his visit to Melungeons as an anthropologist. Linda shared a great article about the Eastern Blackfoot Indians, and there are others. This book is being made available to you online for free. I do have a request for donations to historical projects in Vardy in the front of the book for those who can and are willing to contribute. I don't mind telling you a lot of time and energy went into this little book. The project began for me nearly 2 years ago. I hope the book will help to shed some light on one aspect of our Melungeon heritage. 1. [WVGREENB] Looking for SHUMATE - HOBBS - SCOTT - WHITMAN researchers.
    2. Anyone here researching these families in Greenbrier County? If so, can you possibly tell me what John Shumate, James O. Hobbs, Andrew M. Scott and James Whitman's relationship (family or professional) was to Henry and/or Cain HOOVER in Greenbrier County during the 1835-1860 period? I spent three days in the Chancery Records in Greenbrier County last week...and those records are gold mines for genealogy information...and was told by the staff that very few researchers come there....not in the quantity they do to the County Clerks office. The above and Henry appear on several Chancery Records together? And it was repeatedly documented for different things. Also a George P. Hoover? And I can't seem to connect him to my Henry and Cain.... I have came to the conclusion that my Henry originated the term "Habitual Offender" in the Greenbrier County Judicial System LOL Think he was there enough that the post office probably delivered his mail there. Mentioned to the clerks there that I had not been able to find his death record or a place of burial...and was afraid maybe the last time he was arrested they forgot about him...and the girls said maybe that was what was under the lump in the floor in the sheriff's office LOL Thanks for any help or leads.... Vivian
