    3. Here is another military report for those of you interested in the military activities of Greenbrier Co. men. George Shafer is mentioned in an article on p. 161. He purchased a small farm from Matison McClung and built a log house there in 1876. The neighborhood is known as Kesslers, WV. There is an interesting story about George and the Civil War. It indicates that The Union side was made up of volunteers. The Confederates drafted their soldiers. Those who did not volunteer for the Union army, were forced into the Confederate Army. George was twice captured by Confederate scouts and both times escaped the foes. He was once attacked near Kesslers Cross Lanes, while going home from a neighbor's house with a bucket of milk and a sack of apples. His captors told him, that they would carry his milk, if he would promise not to run. Shafer dropped the bag of apples and darted down the sharp descent and ran away anyway. The second time, they were disturbed at breakfast, and he was told to go with the confederates. However; he ran away. He had two nephews who fought in the Union ranks through the war. One was captured and held as prisoner for 18 months. Both survived the war and came back home. It does not give the names of these nephews. The story says that George and family "joined the Amwell Baptist Church at an early date." They were erased from the curch record along with 200 other members because they would not conform to some resolutions by the Pastor, who was at the time Rev. G.A. Winebrenner. They remained non members until 1909 when the Big Clear Creek Paptist Church was organized. This information is from Greenbrier Co. WVA Family Heritage 1997. Info submitted by Boyles, written by Tim Masters. There is more to the story, but I have shortened it and included the outline version of it. If you would like the more complete story, let me know. Thought it was an interesting story. 3. With regard to the Military service of Dr. Charles Thatcher, these men are also mentioned as being in the army: Mr. Holland, Roller McClung, Bill Griffee, Dr. Brosonficer. Dr. Thatcher's wife, Annie mentioned the Greenbrier Co. residents, in a letter. She said that there were 1800 men in the army at Cloyd's Farm, now there are but a few hundred. She was speaking about the 14th Regiment, during the Civil War. Dr. Thacher was the surgeon for that army. 3. Here are some people who served our country in various wars. I found these in Greenbrier Co. WVa, Heritage 1997 Book. David Clinebell's son, John T. Clinebell, first served with the 166th Regiment of the VA Militia early in the war. Later he joined the newly formed 26th Infantry Battalion. Ulrick was born Ulrick Vollenweider, in Kappel, Switzerland in 1727. During the Revolutionary war Ulrick and his oldest son Jacob served in the York County Militia. The spelling became Fulwider on the Militia rolls. York Co. is in Pennsylvania. Mary Jane McClung Fulwider was b. in Greenbrier Con in 1834. Her parents were Katy John McClung and Rebecca Burr. They were married in Greenbrier Co. 1833. Their son, James, died serving the confederate States of America in 1862. George Anthony McGraw m. Elizabeth "Betsy" Brian McGraw. He was a private under Capt. John McClung. [I am not sure which John McClung this would be.] He was in the 4th Regiment Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. He died from disease while hospitalized at Hampton, Va. in 1814. Moses Fleshman married Elizabeth Orbaugh in 1788. He was a soldier in the VA. militia during the Rev. War. Allen Flint's father, was captured by Federal soldiers during the Civil War and placed in prison, where he died. It does not specify his father's name, but there is other biography material in the article. John Knight joined the Confederate Forces serving as a First Lieuntenant, 135th Regiment, Virginia Quartermaster Corp. He married Margaret Abigail Callison in 1866. Margaret's father was Israel J. Callison, son of Anthony Callison and ABigail McClung, formerly of Pocanhontas Co. VA. Dr. Charles Thacher, served as an Asst. Surgeon in the Civil War in the 14th Regiment. George W. Williams entered the Confederate Army, serving with the 69th Va, known as Wise's Legion, and later served with Bryan's 13th Battalion of Artillery until 1864. He then was promoted to Major of the Signal Corps on general Breckenridge's staff. There is more on these people on the pages that I have. If anyone wants more complete info about the people who are mentioned here, feel free to ask. I am sure there is more information in the other pages that I have, but there is a limit on how much time I can spend on this, at this time. Will try to get to do more on this project at another time. 3. Hello Keith and Listers, While I waited in the jury lounge, I was able to do some research, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I believe the question that you are asking Keith, is whether Carrie Dean's mother was Margaret or Sarah Sammons [Dean]. I have checked the pages that I have in the Heritage book, for Sammons and Dean etc. Could not verify that. Perhaps some of the Listers may know the answer. I can say that I have noticed other discrepancies in the information in that book, just as in the research materials that we find in other places. We probably need to take this book, with some degree of skepticism as we do our other documents and research materials. On pp 131, I wrote it as it is written in the information, which was contributed by Carlos Hefner and family. So, perhaps the contributor was confused, if you think the information is incorrect. I left the messages at the bottom of this message, so that anyone who does not know what the information exchange was before, can catch up with us. I did notice Dean info on pp 25, 92,103,131,159,164,183. I apparently only have pp 131. Perhaps someone else who has the book can look and see if there is more about a Sammons woman marrying John B. Of two Brock families in the 1840 census, Greenbriar Co., the one with sons approximately the correct age would be the family of Andrew Brock. One of his older sons was named Thomas Brock. She made a query as to whether there were: Christopher Shaffer b. 1975 in Berks Co, Pa. Mary Fisher George Shaffer, Peter Shaffer, Elizabeth Shaffer, Mary, Phebe, Philip Shaffer, or her gggrandfather Christopher Shaffer b. 1813 in Greenbrier Co. Elizabeth Cox, dau. of Emmes Cox and Elizabeth Huff, from Greenbrier Co. I found that Shaffers appear on p. 50, 76, and 117. I do have page 50. On that page I find Nellie Shaffer m. Patrick Coughlin, as his second wife. They had a dau., Sarah Ellen Coughlin [b. 1906] who m. Frank McClung. Patrick's first wife was Mattie Taylor. They had one son. 3. My wall is the same as it has been now for several years. George W. Hoover, son of Jacob Hoover and Susan Garver, was born in Greenbriar County approx 1810. His brother Jacob, born 1797, is my ancestor. Jacob's tombstone says he was born 1797 in Lincoln Co VA. Well, as we all know, there was no such place in 1797. Be that as it may, I am certain that Jacob, and brother George, resided with their parents, Jacob and Susan Hoover in Greenbriar County. There is no trace whatsoever of them in Greenbriar. I have sent for a lot of Greenbriar records and have had help from other listers with wills, etc. But Jacob and Susan just don't show up!! Some of their older children were probably married in Greenbriar County. Daughters married into Lane, Sherrard (Sherrod), Chambers and Rounds families. Jacob and Susan Hoover were living in Logan Co Ohio before 1845. Jacob died there; we have his will. They also had a son, Martin, who died before his father died. Don't know whether Martin died in VA or in OH. I have no idea where Jacob Hoover and Susan Garver were married. In looking at all the early Virginia county census/tax records, trying to find Garver and Hoover in the same county, I find only in 1790 that there were families by those surnames in Shenandoah County VA. Suggestions for further research would be very much appreciated. There was a Fred. Hoover in Greenbriar County in the right time frame. I have his will. It seems he did have a son Jacob but no further information. I plan to send for probate, hoping it may say where sons lived at the time of their father's death. I've sent for marriage records of any Jacob Hoover in Greenbriar county in that time frame and have two certified copies but neither are my Jacob. Since I know that Jacob and Susan left Greenbriar before 1850, census records are not a lot of help. Jacob died before 1850; Susan was living with a son in 1850 and said she was born in VA. If anyone is interested in Hoover, Garver/Sarver, Sherrard, Rounds, or Chambers, please visit our home page at http://www.telepath.com/sysjer/genealogy.html Thanks, Linnie Hoover Howell
