    3. Hi Jo Ann, How are you? I received the response below this, from someone on the List. You had inquired about Clack family. I was going over some McClung stuff last night. Would any of your Thompson people be related to McClungs? In Vol 21 of the McClung Journals, I find an interesting article about a Janet Thompson. There is some thought that John McClung [of Rockbridge Co.], was married to a Janet Thompson prior to being married to Rebecca Stuart. There are all sorts of documents which seem to point to the direction of this John being related to Thompson family. These Thompsons are mentioned in will info etc: Thomas Thompson, son of John Thompson. He died 1743. Robert Thompson, brother of Thomas Thomas Thompson described as being nephew of Robert Means in his will. There is will info for Robert Means, Augusta Co. VA. if anyone is interested in it. There is comment that Thomas and Janet were niece and nephew of Robert Means. Also in the same Journal, is the info from Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scot-Irish Settlement in Va. Vol 1 p 69 1755 Robert Mean's Will proved. admr. moved for by Thomas Thompson, his nephew and heir-at-law, and also by John McClung, who married Jannet, niece of the deceased given to Thomas. Vol 3 Pg 40 1754 Robert Mean's will To John McClung, money in hands of Edward Thomson and Thos. Thomson. There are reasons listed for why the writer [Evelyn Witeck] felt that John McClung's first wife was Janet Thompson. If anyone wants them, let me know. So, it is possible that some of the children credited as belonging to Rebecca Stuart, are not hers afterall. Quite a mystery. What does everyone think? 3. Hello Bill and List, First off I am going to send this to the McClung list, in case anyone knows the story without my studying the records. (anything I can do to save time, means that much more time I have to do more lookups etc. :-) Then I need a better idea of a date, and perhaps something about Samuel, as there are quite a few Samuels. Is John's name Lawrence or Lowance. Just checking on the spelling. I have not heard of a surname of Lowance. Course that doesn't mean anything. There are alot of surnames that I have not heard of or studied. I will keep my eye out as I am researching, for these people. Is anyone else researching Lowance? Since you say he is a 4th great grandfather, I would assume that we are talking about the 1700's right? 3. For whatever it is worth, there is a query in Vol 30, McClung Journal from a David Mitchell, 305 Chelmford Dr. Aurora, Ohio 44202. No idea if this is at all a current address. He is seeking info about Nancy Dickenson McClung, who was of "unknown parentage". She was captured by Indicans in her infancy and raised by Capt. Dickenson." She married first James McClung who d. in 1790 and second Joseph Dickson. It includes the name of the children, including William, father of Katy John who I have been studying tonight. Hope you find this further information helpful and understandable in light of the other info that I have compiled tonight. 3. Hi Alice and list, You are right that name is kind of like "The boy named Sue". I can see the problem you are having with the information which I found in the book, "Greenbrier Co./Family Heritage 1997". There are several John McClungs mentioned in Burr information, as well as several Rebecca's. [p. 39] Hopefully, I can clarify this for you. For those who are unfamiliar with the McClung family, they seemed to name all of their early men with distinguishing aka's. That served to help tell one man apart from the other, since they consistantly named their families with the same names over and over again. I have studied these Greenbrier McClungs enough to realize that they were such a manly bunch, that giving the name of Katy [assumably a feminine type name] would not cause anyone to raise an eyebrow. Perhaps one of the McClungs has more information on why this particular John was called Katy John. I can indeed verify that the parent of Mary Jane McClung Fulwider was "Katy" John McClung. That information is found in the Greenbrier Heritage 1997 book, that I have been studying. It is also located in the McClung book by Rev. William McClung. I have learned this about Katy John McClung. His father was William McClung [Long Billie]. The dates in the McClung book on p. 183 are a little screwy, so won't even mention them. He died before he was born, if that helps any. :-) He married Margaret Bollar first and then Martha McMillion. Margaret Bollar was the mother of Katy John McClung. William's brother was Alexander McClung and Rebecca Cavendish. Alexander's aka was Stumpy Alex/Bake Alex. Rebecca was related to Lord Cavendish that I have reported on previously. A comment in the McClung book, indicates that Alexander sold several slaves and drank their worth in alcohol. They had six children. Dates and information on this part of the family is available in the McClung book. [perhaps the Greenbrier Book]. [I have not fully studied the McClung info in the Greenbrier book. There is alot of it.] The information about Katy John marrying Rebecca Burr is found on p. 72 of the Greenbrier Book. It is also found on pg. 39, but John McClung is not listed as Katy John on that page. He is also listed as Katy on p. 185 of the McClung book. On pg 72, it tells about the McClung trait for producing many sons. I have reported on one son, James who died serving the Confederate States of Amer. in 1862. A son was also born before that son. Six daughters followed James. Rebecca died in 1882 and John married her niece Eliza Burr and had three more daughters. Katy John d. in 1900. If anyone would like scanned copies of p. 72 and 73 as attachments, let me know and I can send them by email. There is alot of Burr information on those pages. I scan them and save them by win95 word docs. I also see a biography of John McClung who married Rebecca Burr on p. 18 of vol 30 of the McClung Family Assoc. Journal 1995. It gives the information that Rebecca Burr was the dau. of Aaron and Rebecca Collins Burr. Aaron was b. in Conn.about 1776. His wife was b. in Hampshire Co.[then VA]. Other dates are available for Rebecca's family. There is more info about John and Rebecca's children and so on in this article. I could scan that also for anyone who is interested. There is also info about John's grandfather and his ancestry. The mother of William McClung was of unknown parentage, found deserted in the fort in her infancy, and adopted and raised by Co. Dickenson. Those McClungs are an interesting bunch! The McClung book pretty much verifys the information found in the Greenbrier book. Katy John McClung b. 1809 d. 1900 marrried Rebecca Burr 1833. She was b. 1807 and was the dau. of Aaron Burr,Sr. She died in 1882. McClung book says there were 8 children. Katy John McClung married second Eliza S.R. Burr. She was dau. of Aaron Burr Jr. They married in 1882 Williamsburg, WVA. They had 3 children. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ More McClung/Burr marriages as found in the McClung Book, by Rev. William McClung 1904 Nancy Ann Eliza McClung b. 1848 [twin of Minerva McClung] m. Rev. James Allen Burr 1866. He was b. 1840, d. 1889. If more info is desired on the line which relates to this marriage, I will be happy to try to provide that, as time permits. Please be sure to mention where the info was found and pg, if I have given it in the message. Saves me time and speeds up the response time. :-) James Coggin McClung b. 1817 d. 1875 m. Lucinda Burr 1840. She was b. 1814 d. 1886. They had five children, which are listed. Jennie McClung m. George A. Burr Mt. Lookout, WVA. There is no other info on this couple in the book. Nancy McClung m. John Burr. Williamsburg, WVA. No other info, except ancestors of Nancy is in the book. This Nancy is the sister of Katy John McClung. P.S. I also belong to the McClung list. If anyone wants information on joining that, or the Greenbrier List, feel free to contact me about that. Please feel free to add, or request clarification of this information. Happy Hunting. 3. Hi Joy, and List, I know there is quite abit of Burr information. I have seen it included with information that I have compiled for other surnames. p. 39 Aaron Burr, Jr., Aaron Burr, Sr. and Jehu [John] Burr, have articles about them. If any are familiar let me know. For that page it might be as easy to scan the whole page for you, if the names are familiar. I have been successful at sending scanned items by email. I use the win95 Word program so it seems to be a universal doc. The index that I have has some spots which are difficult to read. So, I do not know which pages to find the other Burr info on. If you find any of my messages, which might list a Burr, let me know. Or perhaps someone else on the list, would either look up Burr in the index and let me know the pages or look up the information for you, themselves. Just found more Burr info on page 72. 3. Hi Karen, How are you? Well, I have four computers in the house. Recently I have been working on updating some of them. I ended up with two new mail programs. In the process I think that a couple of my sent messages did not get put into the sent box. I seem to recall that I sent a message regarding the Vance family to the list for someone. I gave the information [I hope] that on p 169 of the Greenbrier/Family Heritage 1997 book, Amanda C. Vance [b. 1864-] married Benjamin L. Thomas in 1862. Benjamin was the son of George, who was the son of a David Anderson Thomas. I do not see an Amanda Taylor/Tailer in the article, but read on, because I think this might be the family that you are looking for. Let me see if I can construct a line, based upon this article for the Thomas family. Remember that there do seem to be some discrepancies in the book or else differences in other references, so take the information subject to verification. James Thomas [one of the petitioners for the formation of Greenbrier Co.] was the father of David Thomas [not David Anderson Thomas]. David Thomas is listed on the 1790 census for Greenbrier Co. He is also listed on the 1787 Tax List for the county. He is listed along with his sons on the 1830 census. David's wife is possibly Elizabeth. She is listed on the 1840 Census with no spouse and was 40-50 years old. David's children were: David Anderson Thomas [1817-1904] m. Amanda Melvinia Dyches [1818-1884]. 3. Hi Jo Ann, and List, I checked for Thompson in the Greenbrier/Family Heritage 1997 book. There are about 18 pages with that name on them. That would make a big report. Perhaps it would be easier to look for specific people. No Thomson. I am not sure if Clack is listed. The index page of the copy is not clear around the names beginning with C. Perhaps someone else knows if the name Clack is in the book. Let me have an idea of the line of Thompsons that you might be interested in. I will try to take a look. Who knows I might find time to do one of my "reports" at that time and give you more than you bargained for. :-) Joyce in Ca. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3231 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/r/m/Joyce-C-Armstrongcooper/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~carvgs/rgs.htm Main names I am researching, VINCENT, TAYLOR, BRUNS,LIVESAY,ELLIS,MCCLUNG,JOPLING, COOPER, and many more, too numerous to post.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Jo Ann Day Freeman <[email protected]reone.com> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 1999 9:45 AM Subject: Greenbrier Book > Could you please tell me if the following name is included in this book? > > Greenbrier Co. 1. [WVGREENB-L] Point Pleasant Battle
    2. Does anyone have any information on this battle? I was told there was a Richard Wilson who fought in it. I have been trying for years to find the parents of Richard D. Wilson, Jr., b. abt. 1785 (not sure of his birthplace) d. abt. 1851 in Harlan Co., KY. He m. Mary Ruth Green Dec. 15, 1806 in Knox Co, KY. I was told by other family genealogist that his father was also named Richard and he never left VA. (Found out that the part of VA his father never left is now Greenbrier WV.) But, I can find no proof anywhere that the Richard Wilson they claim to be Richard D Wilson's parents even had a son named Richard. I spoke to Dorsey Wilson by phone this morning and he said there was another Richard Wilson that fought in the Point Pleasant Battle. Does anyone have any info on this Richard Wilson? Thanks Gail

    2. *******
    3. The Lewisburg Academy has been closed for many years. After Dr. McIlhenny's tenure in the 19th century, the school later formed the roots of the Greenbrier Presbyterian Military School (which became Greenbrier Military School, which closed in the 1970s) and the Lewisburg Female Seminary (which became the Lewisburg Female Institute and then the Greenbrier College for Women, which also closed in the 1970s). Greenbrier Community College now occupies the site of the original academy on the grounds of the former Greenbrier College for Women. If you're trying to locate information on someone who attended either the military school or the women's college, you might try contacting either of the alumni associations, both of which are active. At the Greenbrier Historical Society, we have most of the early (and later) yearbooks from both schools. 3. Yes, George Meadows was the son of Jeremiah Meadows by his wife Elizabeth Conley. George died sometime before 1840, and thus was dead before Jeremiah. George's daughter Isabella (b. ca 1823) has been often confused as the daughter of Jeremiah Meadows, probably because she appears ("Isabella and Melville Johnson") as one of the heirs in the bill of sale of the heirs of J. Meadows after Jeremiah's death. Since George was already dead, Isabella would have been a direct heir. Jeremiah's daughter Isabella (b. ca 1795) married Daniel Bragg. 3. Hi Bill, How are you? I did find Linda's e-mail address after much searching. Here is her address and you can contact her directly. [email protected] [Linda] In the Family Heritage book which I have been reporting on recently, I find the name Schaffer in various forms. Whether they are related is unknown to me of course. Shafer is listed on p. 122,127,161,173 I have p. 127. The article speaks of McClungs and Margaret Shafer Bennett, and Lucinda Judy Shafer. P. 161 has an interesting story about George Shafer's Civil War and Church experiences. I have written more in another message about this. I do not have the other pages for Shafer. Shaeffer p. 100 [I do not have this page] Shaffer, p. 50,76,117 p. 50 Nellie Shaffer I have given this information previously in another message also. Shaver p. 26,35,52,76 [I do not have any of these pages.] Shawyer p. 41, 70, 85, 86 p41 lists Sarah Shawver m. James Callison Mary "Jane" Callison m. Robert Shawver The article is mostly about Callison family. I do not have the other pages. Hope this helps someone. If you want more information about any of these let me know. Please give me the page number if I have listed it, when requesting further information. :-) Joyce in Ca. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3231 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/r/m/Joyce-C-Armstrongcooper/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~carvgs/rgs.htm Main names I am researching, VINCENT, TAYLOR, BRUNS,LIVESAY,ELLIS,MCCLUNG,JOPLING, COOPER, and many more, too numerous to post.... ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 26, 1999 4:30 AM Subject: Re: [WVGREENB-L] Schaffer > I'd like to hear more from Linda about the Schaffers she listed.
