Wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the Eli Taylor that married Margaret Woods in Greenbrier on Sept. 25, 1800? I am trying to track information on a James Woods Thomas born in Greenbrier about 1840. His parents were (we think) David A. (possibly Anderson) Thomas and Amanda Tailor (Taylor?). The Taylor/Woods marriage caught my eye because of the way children were named. Would love to hear from anyone . . !!! Thanks. Karen

Hi Folks, All right, I've been busy this morning, and have created a page featuring postcards from Greenbrier County. <http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvgreenb/postcard.htm> Check it out and let me know what you think! Valerie
Hi Folks, I've updated the Brick Walls page at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvgreenb/brickwal.htm>. If I missed anyone's post, please send it to me and I'll get it on the page. Also, I've been collecting some Greenbrier County postcards, and thought I would make a nice page for them. If any of you have old postcards from this area, you can send me a *.jpg scan of them and I'll add them to the page. I'll be adding little historical tidbits in the coming weeks....an account of the Battle of Green Briar, VA, Oct. 1861, lists of local officials from various West Virginia Blue Books (1940's), from the Acts of West Virginia Legislature, 1870, the resolutions regarding removing Judge Nathaniel HARRISON form the Seventh Judicial Circuit, (this account names the women involved! - gasp!). I also have some old high school year books from the Rupert High School - early 1960's. Anyone know someone who went to Rupert High School? I have some old telephone directories for the Lewisburg, Rupert, Rainelle, Frankford, Marlinton, Hillsboro, Ronceverte, etc. I'm open to suggestions on using these phone books...if I'm not mistaken, the exchanges are still active. Thanks to everyone who have been sharing their data with the list lately. Have a safe and joyous Easter! I have had quite a few requests for Cart information. Am sending some of the messages to Karen Cabler, who I am not sure is on the Greenbrier List, to see if she can help us sort out some of the discrepancies in the Cart/Vance area. This morning, my husband and I have been researching on the CD's to see what we could verify, or add to the information, which we had previously about the family. Hope you find this report interesting, and can place these people in their appropriate spot. I will start with some information which seems very strange. This comes from the 1850 Census CD #309. [Kanawha Co. VA] Coonrod Cart age 66 Mary A. age 57 If this is our Mary Polly Vance, this leads us to think that there is another possible birthdate for her. Information has her born in 1780 and 1789, This would lead us to a date of 1784, I think. Polly A. age 23 Rebecca age 20 Elizabeth age 18 Virginia age 16 Hannah age 14? There is also a 25 year old Male laborer living with them. Not sure if he is a Cart. Listed under him, is a William last name unreadable. He is age 15. I am thinking he belongs to the Throwman group which also lives there. James W. Throwman age 10 John R. Throwman age 6 Charles ? last name unreadable, age 84. He is a milworker apparently. Does anyone have the children for Conrad and Mary polly Vance Cart listed? I only list four children for them. There must be more. I am wondering if the Throwman children are grandkids and the children of one of their children. Do you think this is the right Conrad Cart? Conrad Cart's child Richard, who we have discussed previously was not listed with them in 1850. I believe that the Census information also found in 1850 Census CD [Kanawha Co. VA], for a Richard Cart, is the right one to be Conrad and Mary Vance Cart's son, Richard. Everything checks out. Richard Cart age 29 Farmer Mahalia age 21 George age 2 years old. Only problem I have with this is that I had birth year of 1852 for George. This would seem that he was b. in 1848, if we can trust the Census. On the Marriage index #229, for VA and various states, we find the date of 1808 for the marriage of Conrad Cart and spouse "Polly" Vance . August 20, 1808 Sec. 5, Chapt. 75, Monroe Co. VA. I did not have the location before. I had a date of 1807 for the marriage of Conrad and Mary Polly Vance, from John Hoff. Hope this helps someone. Jane Walker married John Alderson III in January 1805 in Monroe County [W]VA. Her father John Walker didn't seem to leave many records. He may have moved from this area. Does anybody know this Jane or John Walker? Juhling McClung

Help! I have more information on the Jarrett family than I can process. Is this correct: James Jarrett (md Rosanna Vincent) died 1821 in Greenbrier Co., his will naming sons Jacob, Morris, George, James, Vincent, Levi, William, Owen, Isaac and Abraham. Daughters were Delilah, Eveline, and Leah Graham. Also names were sons-in-law Benjamin Morris and William Jones. Questions: 1) Who were the wives of the sons-in-laws? It seems the wives would be Delilah and Eveline - but I already have a conflict with Delilah. The book on Warrens lists her as wife of Thornton Warren. I have seen references to her marriage to Jacob Hamilton. 2) Is the James, the son of James and Rosanna, the James who md Ruth Gwinn? Did James and Ruth have a dau named Delilah? 3) The History of Greenbrier Co; J R Cole, states that Thomas Clay married Margaret Jarrett, d/o James and Ruth (Gwinn). pg 304: "James Jarrett the first built one of the first stone houses on Muddy Creek, which still stands well preserved, and is still occupied. He married Elizabeth Griffy, a devout Presbyterian." Where does Elizabeth Griffy fit into the picture? This is a side line for me - Thornton Warren was a brother to my ggg grandfather. My database is a mess with this family - any help will be appreciated. Carol

Hello List, I feel guilty that I am not spending enough time with the Vincent surname, which should be my main area of research. Am too busy with the collateral lines. :-) I have been studying the book called Greenbrier Co. WVA Family Heritage Book. I do not have page 57 amongst my copies. So, I checked with a fellow researcher and got the information which tells about the Vincent surname on pg 57 of that book. She offers a copy of the Dorsey information, if we need it. I can have her scan it or something and then can find out more about it. Here is what she sent me about the information on a Vincent. Is this family familiar to anyone? OK, Page 57---- Under the heading of JOHN DORSEY. John Isaac Dorsey married Nellie O'Dell. Children: Florence, James, Margie, John Jr., Kenneth, Merl, Robert, and Mae. Then paragraphs mentioning each childs spouse. It says "Robert married Betty Vincent and they live in Indiana and have two children, Gary and Gail. Gary has three children and Gail has one."
