    3. Hello Melinda, How are you? I wanted to get back to you right away before you left. I have written to John Hoff again to see if he could help with updating info or anything. He has given me some very good input and helped to clear the cobwebs, concerning Conrad and Mary. He is a very good researcher and more experienced than I am. I have lots of resources and consciously know about the primary and secondary sources [I think that is what they are called]. But sometimes I still don't think it through as a more experienced genealogist would. He explains that the most trustworthy source is the baptismal records, which verify the birth date of 1782 for Conrad Cart. He still says that his father is Adam Cart, and mother is Maria Catharina Schmidt. He fully explains how the information gets confused and says he would not give as much credance to the KVGS book, because the contributers may have easily been assuming things which were not necessarily true. I have written him for permission to forward his messages to the list, to help with clarifications. He also distrusts census information, as I do also. But he says that the information I found in the 1850 census where Conrad and Mary are much older, is the correct family. He says the ages may be a little off [he explains that], but the family structure is correct. As I understand it, He says that the Conrad Cart whose father is William and the mother a Heppenheimer, is another Conrad and not to be confused with Adam's son, Conrad Cart. I already determined yesterday to go by my original configuration of Conrad as Adam's son, and the birthline given in the KVGS, as well as your information and the information given by John Hoff 3rd. I will use the baptismal record as the true birth dates. I will wait and see if I can figure out how William Cart, father of the other Conrad fits into the relationship with Adam Cart as I believe the correct assumption at this point is that he is a separate individual. I can not explain why both Adam Carts are credited with marrying a Mary Vance/Wentz/Wantz, nor did John explain that. If and when I get permission from John, I will forward his message to the list in the hopes that he will help clear the cobwebs from my fellow Vance and Cart researchers. :-) Happy hunting. 3. Hi Va, and Listers, Are you totally confused now about the Vances and the Carts? It all hinges now on whether I can figure out who William Cart who married a Heppenheimer, is connected to. What I need to figure out is could he be the brother of Adam, who several of us have as the father of Conrad Cart. I have finally decided that the best thing to do, is report the lines as I get them, from the Ancestry of KVGS book, and John Hoff, who is related etc. Melinda also has a line which seems to follow the general lines found in the KVGS book. I am not sure what to do with the information on the William and Heppenheimer Cart, which Marcia sent. I think that is a separate Conrad Cart. I don't have any information about accessing records from the Greenbrier Archives or anything. That might be something that Valerie or some more knowlegable researcher would know, so am posting this to the list. Please listers see the query below. I haven't come across Griders or any similar type name that I know of yet. Will keep you in mind if I do. 3. Hello Marcia, How are you? Thanks for the correction of the spelling of your name. Have corrected it in my address book. Is it possible that your William Cart who married Maria C. Heppenheimer, could have been a brother of Adam Cart, who is said by some researchers to be the father of Conrad Cart? I do not show the siblings of Adam Cart. That is fine, though because I am not as interested in going much farther back than Conrad Cart. I am mainly interested in him, because some of his children married into lines which are related to my husband. Do you or anyone know which Conrad Cart, this Cart goes to? 3. Hello Cart, Vance researchers. My marriage cd, did not show a Conrad Cart marrying a Mary "Polly" Wentz or Wantz. It did show a Conrad Cart marrying a Betsey Beemer, in Monroe County. That was in 1807. Now that is interesting, in light of the fact that we also have information that a Conrad Cart married Mary Polly Vance/Wentz/Wantz in 1807, in some sources. Did you notice that the information, which specifys 1807 and 1808 for their marriage, also took place on exactly the same date, but different year, for Conrad Cart and Mary Vance? Just thinking out loud. I can dig that there are two Conrad Carts, since I have two sets of parents. But strangely they are both credited with marrying Mary Vance. Strange. I will keep studying this. 3. Hello Vance and Cart researchers. Remember that at one point, I made a remark about the possibilities of two Conrad/Conrood Carts? Well the evidence seems to be mounting up. I will see if I can make this as clear for you as I can, and see what you all think. I am sending a cc to John Hoff, since I am using some of his information in the process of trying to sort this information out. Perhaps he can provide us with further clues about this. I am using these resources in my research: 1. Family Group Record for Adam Cart/Maria Catharina Schmidt and notes etc. from John Hoff the 3rd. Apparently alot of his research on them is from the LDS records and CD's from Family Tree. [November 1997] 2. Marriage CD FTM 3. 1850 Census CD 4. Baptism records found on messages from Melinda [Mopitch], as well as John Hoff 3rd information 5. Ancestors of Kanawha Co. vol 5 Book 6. Information from Marcia Rhinehart, and VA. Could there be two Conrad Carts and/or Mary Vances? I show Adam Cart/Karch and Maria Catharina Schmidt as parents of Conrad Cart b. in 1782, Montgomery Co. Pa. I also show Conrad James Cart b. 1784 in Montgomery Co. Pa. who was the son of William Cart and Maria Heppenheimer. I also show Conrad Cart b. 1784 in Greenbrier Co. WVA in the Ancesters of Kanawha Co. Book. To add to the confusion: Baptism records show Conrad Cart Baptised 1782 sponsered by Conrad Schmidt and Elizabeth Heppenheimer Further information shows Richard D. Carte b. 1821, in Greenbrier Co. WV. who is the son of Conrad Cart and Mary Vance. Marriage dates: several places list a positive date of 8-20-1807 for the marriage of Conrad and Mary Polly Wentz, also known as Vance, in Monroe Co. Va. The marriage cd for one, lists the marriage date as 8-20-1808 for Conrad and Mary Polly Vance. Several other places indicate the same date for the marriage. Birth dates and places for Mary Polly Vance I show 12-18-1789 in York Co. Pa. Monaghan Twnsp. 1780 [Ancesters of Kanawha Co., submitted by Judith Brinegar] 1784 [1850 cd census] death dates Mary Polly Vance 1-24-1863 in Kanawha co. Va. aft 1870 [Ancestors of Kanawha Co. Book submitted by Judith Brinegar] Then Melinda says: Robert Vance married Mary E. Cart 1810. She was the dau. of Willhelm Cart and Catherine Heppenheimer.... Where does it all fit? Could one of the Mary Vances be a Vance by marriage? According to Marcia's info, this Mary would have been Conrad's sister. The Mary Ann Kart who was the sister of the Conrad Cart, who was son of Adam and Cathrina Cart, married Alexander Brown. There must be more than one Conrad Carte. This is most confusing, isn't it? There may not be an easy answer......I have to go on an errand. Will see what else I can come up with later. Glad if anyone can sort this mess out. I am going to play a hunch and see if a Mary Polly Wentz/ Wantz married a Conrad Cart, next time I am able to research. Could it be that Mary Polly Wentz and Mary Polly Vance are two different Mary Pollys and not one and the same? 3. Can anybody tell me the maiden name (with a source) of Henrietta Williams, wife of James, shown here in the 1860 Bath co VA census? They were probably married in late 1850 or 1851, since James was with his mother Nancy in the 1850 Bath census and their first child is 9 in 1860. I have checked the following counties for a marriage record: Augusta, Alleghany, Bath, Greenbrier, Highland, Nelson, Pocahontas, Rockbridge, Rockingham, CD 229 (VA Marriage Index). I will also send this to the WILLIAMS-L list. James Williams 31 m wagonmaker, R=300, P=100 Henrietta 34 f William H. 9 m Mary J. 7 f Ella V. 4 f Ira L. 2 m I theorize that she is Henrietta Criser/Critzer, d/o Henry & Polly, because that's the only Henrietta of the right age in the 1850 Bath census and Henry lives only 5 houses away from them in 1860, but this is weak evidence. I'm not researching the Williams family otherwise; this is for my 1860 Bath census annotation project. 1. [WVGREENB-L] THOMAS
    2. I am researching the ancestry of James Woods THOMAS, b. 1839 in Greenbrier Co. Many people have assisted and it is truly appreciated. I still can't get any proof yet about who his parents were. We think this was his family in 1850 as indicated on the 1850 Greenbrier Censes: Anderson, Thomas . 30 This is David Anderson Thomas, we think Amanda 30 James W. - 11 Elizabeth J - 9 George W - 7 Richard - 5 Elijah W. - 1/12 We also believe that this is the David A. Thomas found in the 1880 Greenbrier Census: David A. wm 63 Amanda M. wf 62 Elijah W - 30 Almony A - 10 We can not confirm the wife of David A. It could be Amanda Tailor; Amanda Melvinia Dyches; or Sally Taylor. Someone had listed a Mary Ellen Collison, b. 1852 marrying David Richard Thomas; son of David Anderson Thomas and Sally Taylor. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Karen
