    1. [WVGREENB-L] Jane George abt 1720-?1760, VA
    2. Juhling McClung
    3. Jane George married Thomas Carroll and lived in old Augusta Co, VA. Her father was probably Thomas George, probably born 1695-1700. If Jane was William Carroll's second wife, her father Thomas George may have been born a little later. William and Jane Carroll lived in old Augusta County on what later became the current Rockingham-Shenandoah Co. line William CARROLL [abt 1721 - 1771] moved from Frederick Co,MD to Augusta Co where he was a constable in 1742. His other wife's name was Mary. I suspect Mary was the first wife. I am seeking information on the George connections. Juhling McClung

    1. [WVGREENB-L] Brickwalls: where are they buried?: Addison NICELY (1850-AFT 1910)
    2. Does anyone know of a cemetery near Friar's Hill that is not listed in the Falling Spring District cemetery book? I am anxious to find where my ancestor, Addison NICELY (1850-AFT 1910), is buried. Based on an interview with one of his granddaughter's who was still alive a few years ago, Addison was buried at Unus. In a follow-up interview, she said he was buried at Friar's Hill. I have searched some cemeteries in the Friar's Hill area, but with no success. I have not been able to find his death record at the Grbr C.H., but I have also been told he lived on Butler Mountain. Based on census data, he must have died after 1910. I can document him in the census as follows: 1860 Greenbrier Co., VA (now WVa) census, age "7", w/ father St. Clair NICELY. 1870 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "18", w/ father St. Clair NICELY. 1880 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "27", as head of household. 1890 WVa census, NOTE: n/a. 1900 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, born "Oct 1849", as head of household. 1910 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "56", as head of household. 1920 Greenbrier Co., WVa census: not listed. If this is familiar to anyone, or if anyone has documented a cemetery in the Friar's Hill area where Addison NICELY (1850-AFT 1910) is buried, please let me know. Thanks in advance. :-) -----signature----- Joe Clinebell Apex, North Carolina

    1. [WVGREENB-L] Brickwalls: where are they buried?: Lucie CLINEBELL (1844-1932)
    2. Does anyone know of a cemetery near Maxwelton that is not listed in the Lewisburg District cemetery book? I am anxious to find where my ancestor, Lucie CLINEBELL (1844-1932), is buried. Based on deed records, she lived on Miller's Mountain from 1875 to 1930. Based on the obituaries of her children, she lived at Maxwelton from 1930 to 1932. Based on death records at the Grbr C.H., she died 13 Nov 1932 at Maxwelton, age 84, occupation: housekeeper. One of her daughters, Melvina CLINEBELL Judy, is buried at Clifton Presbyterian Church at Maxwelton. I have searched other cemeteries in the Maxwelton and Judy Road area, but with no success. I can document her in the census except for 1860 and 1870: 1850 Greenbrier Co., VA (now WVa) census, age "6", w/ mother Susan Jane CRIST Clinebell. 1860 census, age 16? 1870 census, age 26? 1880 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "29", as head of household. 1890 WVa census, NOTE: n/a. 1900 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, born "Aug 1849", as head of household. 1910 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "61", as head of household. 1920 Greenbrier Co., WVa census, age "70", as head of household. If this is familiar to anyone, or if anyone has documented a cemetery in the Maxwelton area where Lucie CLINEBELL (1844-1932) is buried, please let me know. If it does, I apologize in advance. I work in a profession in Washington State that led me to an idea. I would love opinions, but criticism, etc is out. I only want opinions and feedback to make or break the idea once and for all. In my profession, the information I have is confidential. I will not disclose it and DO NOT ask me to. Last night alone I had over 100 people (this is an everday occurance) that were in the age ranges of 95 to 100 that had all of their vital information including ancestors, place of birth, mother, father, social security, other information, and next of kin in their records. The thought that has been ocurring to me over and over as I see obituaries posted with, hopefully providing, information on next of kin. Why not interview these people while they are still living. Most are in nursing homes, but many are not. Of the ones that are in nursing homes, only a small portion seem to be there (less than 1%) for memory problems. What I am suggesting is this: 1] If everyone who is interested would go to their local nursing homes, retirement communities, rehabilitation centers (persons recovering from surgeries,etc..) and meet the people, there is a goldmine of information available. 2] Many of these people are lonely and would love to share their ancestors and family with you. Be up front and tell them you would like to talk to people who want to discuss their families, both current and past. 3] Come armed with pencil and paper as well as a tape recorder to back you up. Ask permission to record it and tell them why. Just don't do it secretly. 4] If someone does not want to talk to you about it, you have not lost anything but a little time and you hopefull will have made life a little better for someone that day. 5] I always leave my phone number with them in case they change their mind. Many have, and I run right up there. 6] I have tried this for awhile now and I have come across many of the names you are all researching. They may not be your relatives, but they are someones. Many are Germans and Volga Germans, but there are many other nationalities as well. I am going to continue this project for myself no matter what. 7] If everyone who is interested would do the same and post the information (with the person's permission and excluding their living relatives) we would all get somewhere a heck of a lot faster. 8] Because the person who is providing the information is LIVING, they could be contacted for information regarding other living relatives. Anyone who is worried about invading their private information could do like I did and contact the nearest living relative or emergency contact to verify there is not a problem pursuing their ancestry and posting the results on the internet and in email. 9] Because the homes, etc are local there is not an expense involved in calling, faxing, visiting or contacting relatives. 10] The surname boards could carry a new heading of Living Ancestors or something like that and every one could post their info to it by State,County, Surname or whatever. Follow up names could be checked with these people for verification and possible trigger even more new information. 11] Perhaps if we listed ourselves (those who are willing) as volunteers in the community in which we live to go back and follow up for people, we would be doing a service to someone. Someone else in turn in their community may do this service for you. 12] Many of these senior citizens I have found out are trying to find living descendants because they have lost contact. 13] The advantage here is that you can finally break that 100 year privacy barrier and do it with the ancestors permission. If you are worried about it , make a form, have them sign that you have permission to post it. If you are still worried, have their living descendant emergency contact sign it too. That way you are not preying on these people. They really want to help I have found. 14] If you really care about these people, take a grandchild, child, or pet with you. They can spend the entire day just reliving their past. Children, grandchildren, and animals trigger many more memories for them. What does everyone think? I THINK I recall reading on this list that there is someone who, for a fee, will go to the courthouse and obtain copies of wills, etc. I'm looking for someone to get copies of a probate record. Thought it would be faster if I can find an individual than to write to the courthouse. Or is that the case? Thanks, Linnie Hoover Howell http://linnie.rootsweb.com

    3. Hi Juhling, Both your GEORGE & CARROLL lines interest me. My gf Geo SEE 1755 Hardy Co, WV-1835 Marion Co, MO m Martha GEORGE 25 Dec 1777 in Greenbrier Co, WV. There were GEORGE families in both Hardy Co and Greenbrier Cos, WV in that era. I have worked both areas but have not been successful in connecting her to her parents! They were in So. Charleston, Kanawha Co, WV by 1800 where they were neighbors/in-laws to CARROLLs with some migrating together to Logan Co, KY and on to Marion Co, MO by 1820. I would be interested in discussing these lines in these areas in that era. I've seen the name but couldn't fit it into my line of Metzkers. All the info was tucked away in my "doesn't fit yet" file. So, last night I started going thorugh papers and found my info on Philip... as I was reading I hit the name John Craft McVey. I KNEW there was something "clicking." Continued on and came across John Craft McVey married Olive Metzker. They had a daughter Adaline who married Jesse Alan Zickafoose, son of Benjamin Zickafoose and Susannah Buzzard. BINGO! Still haven't figured out where Olive's father Philip fits into my Metzker line but I know he has to. Just to many connections in VA., for him not to. Ellen

    3. Hello Joe and Listers, I appreciate the extra information, which I did not have on this couple. Wanted you to know that I checked several resources including, the copies of the McClung Book that I have. [I don't have the whole thing, just the index and Greenbrier and Rockbridge Co. related stuff.] I also have copies of the Greenbrier Heritage 1997. I did not find anything in the pages that I have, but there are about 30 pages that are supposed to have the Smith name on them. So, I may have missed something. I also checked the McClung Journals and index. I did find the reference in the McClung book, about Sarah Jane McClung and her marriage to James Smith, in 1847. That is all I found. Hopefully someone else on the Greenbrier or McClung lists can add to this. While I am at it, I found Abigail Cavendish m. Carroll McClung. Does anyone know the parents of Abigail, or how she relates to Lord Cavendish? Thanks for your help, Joe. 1. [WVGREENB-L] Brickwalls: parents of Sarah HARFORD (ABT 1829-BEF 1863)
    2. I am fishing for the parents of Sarah HARFORD (ABT 1829-BEF 1863). St. Clair NICELY married 25 Oct 1848 to Sarah HARFORD. Source: Greenbrier County Marriages, 1782-1900, by Larry G. Shuck, p. 280. Source: Greenbrier County Courthouse marriage records. Book 1-A, page 100, year 1848. She is listed in the 1850 Greenbrier Co., VA (now WVa) census, age "21", w/ husband St. Clair NICELY. She is listed in the 1860 Greenbrier Co., VA (now WVa) census, age "29", w/ husband St. Clair NICELY. She must have died before 1863, because her husband, St. Clair NICELY, married 3 Mar 1863 to Lucy YATES. If this is familiar to anyone, or if you know the parents of Sarah HARFORD (ABT 1829-BEF 1863), please email me. Thanks in advance for the help. :-) -----signature----- Joe Clinebell Apex, North Carolina
