If anyone has access to Greenbrier County Will Book v. 1, page 139 and/or the Greenbrier County Family Heritage Book, page 66 (not sure which year! Refers to Fleshman or Fleischman family), I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. I am working on an incredibly difficult search for the descendants of my family's slaves, and I believe I have found one. The above pages have some information that will help resolve a question for me. All assistance appreciated/reciprocated as possible. Thanks very much... I am still in the process of transcribing my two volumes of Myers History of West Virginia in two volumes online to electronic version. At present, I am about 40% finished with 1000 pages approximately. There are MANY surnames (var. spellings) that I have seen on this list already. Below you will find a topic list of the chapters I have completed. I finished one chapter out of order, because I felt it was quite important to many people, and held a great deal of historical information. I will enjoy hearing any feedback you have on my newest project. Please feel free to link to my pages, as always, but I appreciate credit if you can manage it, as this has taken me a great deal of time! A Mary Lammone Sigmon was one of them. I spent a week researching that, as well as doing my newsletter :-)....and the consensus of opinion, at this point, is that it can not be proven that Mary did not have Indian Heritage. If anyone can document that information, will be interested in hearing more. I have researched some of the Sigmon line, which seems to relate to the Legg line, through a Melinda Burdette, who married William Sigmon Jr. I have more on the Sigmon line as relates to William Sigmon Jr. if anyone is interested. Melinda relates to Thomas LeggIV, who was the father of William H. Legg who married Susannah Vincent, of Greenbrier Co. The lineage is like this. Thomas Legg Elizabeth Legg Archibald Burdette Melinda Burdette m. William Sigmon Jr. Archibald is her father, Elizabeth is her grandmother, and Thomas would be her ggrandfather, if I have the lineage straight. I welcome corrections and additions. I have the Sigmon vitals information. Does anyone have the Burdette vitals, for Melinda and Archibald? Glad to share what I have. Happy Hunting. Melinda Osborne--Pitchford P.S. I am curious about this side because that is where I got my name. I had no idea that the name had been in the family so long until 10 months ago! It was a nice suprise.
Recently I saw a query concerning whether Susannah Sizemore who married William Walker, was of Indian Descent. Quoting information sent to Ginny Anderson, by Kent E. Kroehler, Susannah was the dau. of Hirum Sizemore and Virginia Elizabeth Jane Dinkous/Elizabeth Jane Dinkous/Dinkins. Elizabeth is reported to have been a Cherokee Indian from Tenn. I believe her brother Jesse John Sizemore also married into the Greenbrier area lines, that we research. He married Nancy J. Walker, who was the dau. of J. Milton Walker and Martha Jane Moore. [Anyone have parents for Martha Jane Moore?] J. Milton Walker's parents were James A. Walker and Nancy Legg. Nancy was the dau. of Susannah Vincent, and William Legg of Greenbrier Co. VA. William Walker who m. Susannah Sizemore, was also the son of James A. Walker and Nancy Legg. Now here is the hard question: Who were James A. Walker's parents? I have Elverton P. Walker. Previous research shows that James's mom was Margaret McGeehee. But I hear that James A. Walker's death certificate identifys his mother as Susan [Bailes?]. Does anyone have documentation about Elverton P. Walker and his wives and children? Thanks for the help. Of course, I will gladly share, what I have. I believe that Elverton's father was Peter Walker, and his Mom was Jane? I found a good Walker site, if anyone is interested. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sueowens/walker/ There is marriage info etc. about the Sigmons and Walkers that I am reporting about today. I am continueing my report about the Hamilton Family. To start with, let me credit the source of the "Hamilton Papers". Marilyn Schuelzky apparently wrote a report to John F. Hamilton Jr. There is an address for him, if anyone wants that. The papers include information from letters written by Aunt Ruth Hamilton Carlin, granddaughter of Major William Hamilton. The papers also indicate that Ike Mitchell sent them. And I got them via Betty Moutray. In the process, some compiling has been done, and notes of correction written in the information. I guess that some of this information comes through a Clay Hamilton of the Hamilton Society, to Marilyn Schuelzky. Some of the records are said to be in possession of Miss Emma Beard of Lewisburg, WV, 1957, copied by Wilma Beard Harper, Elkins WV. Marilyn says both Ladies are probably deceased by now. Listed is info about Major William Hamilton : b. 1744 d. 1825 He married Isabella Clemmons/Clements 1773. Isabella was b. 1756 d. 1846 Capt. Jacob C. Hamilton was the youngest son of Major William and Isabella Hamilton. He married Delilah Jarrett. Jacob was b. 1796. She was b. 1804. They were married in 1825, I believe that would be in Greenbrier Co. VA. The letter says that Delilah died from "dropsy", when the children were little, and a slave named Viney had charge of the home, untill all the children were grown and the girls were married. Jacob Hamilton, [Marilyn Schuelzky's grandfather], lived to be 81 years old, and was not really at all sick, during his life. He died of a carbuncle on the back of his neck. Marilyn says that he was a fine looking man who she remembers as having snow white hair and long white whiskers. He did not give the children much attention, she says, but he would bring them treats of apples and chestnuts and allow them to sit on his lap and plait his whiskers. He had never used a razor, and his whiskers were soft and silky. Their children: James William was b. 1825 d. 1851 m. in 1850. I do not see the name of his wife, but we are told that "she was beautiful, but not his social equal." [Marilyn's words] After "Jim" died, she made her home with "his father's family, until she strayed from the straight and narrow way. Then she went west and married very well." There is a name here, Martha Headrick Hamilton. That could be the wife's name. Marilyn goes on to say that "Jim" went to California during the goldrush, crossing the plains in a covered wagon. He influenced his father, Jacob Hamilton to sell the home place to Andrew Johnston. Marilyn continues saying that Jacob moved into a large house that stood by the corner of Blue Sulphur lawn, but across the road. [I would love to know more about Andrew Johns[t]on, since the Johnson family also relates to the Jarretts and Vincents and Hinchman family. Could Jacob have sold the property to "family"? ] When "Jim" returned from the West, he married, but lived only a short time after his marriage. Marilyn says that "Jim" was moved into a bedroom with his mother, Delilah Jarrett Hamilton. She was also seriously ill. He died about two weeks before his mother. Marilyn says "Jim" was wild and reckless; but when he knew death was near, he called one of his slaves, Caperton Hamilton to come and pray for him. "Jim" became converted and shouted that he was "a grand snatched from the burning" and told his mother that she would soon be with him. Marilyn says her papa [not sure who this was at this time], told them stories about "Uncle Jim" Hamilton and Dr. Hunter, going up Snake Run, to get a man's body to dissect. [Was this Sally's husband?] They had no way to carry it, so tied it to Dr. Hunter, on horseback. Uncle Jim played a trick and told the Dr. that the constable was after them. He almost ruined the horse, trying to get away. Dr. Hunter was a physician at Blue sulpher, when he was a young man. There is also a story here, about Uncle Jim and how wild he was. One night he was "tipsy" and passed by the old haunted Muddy Creek Church. He decided to call the ghosts out, that if there were any, they should show themselves. When a figure appeared in the window, dressed in white, the horse was frightened, and ran about a mile before Uncle Jim could stop him. Marilyn continues with information about Jim, to say that Emma Beard, evidently contributed the death date and may have been mistaken about the death date, or else his wife, Martha was pregnant when Jim died. Evidently there was a child born, who is reported to have been Jim's and his wife's child. This child would have been the grandfather of John Hamilton, who Marilyn sent this information to. Marilyn indicates the possibility that this child was born when Martha "strayed from the straight and narrow". She says that the part about Jim's wife "going West" seems to fit with your gr-grandmother who died in Iowa. Marilyn suggests that he write to Mrs. Harper, who used to be a member of the Greenbrier Historical Soc. Lewisburg WV. Another thought would be a will or intestate records for James W. Hamilton at the time of his death. There also should be cemetery records in Muddy Creek or some other cemetery in Greenbrier Co. A good question is "Where did Martha marry James W. Hamilton? Will let this be cut short at this time. Will continue with another message. Happy to hear additions or corrections, and hope this is clear to you, as to who is saying what. There seem to be so many people's information in this report, so that it is difficult to figure out who is talking sometimes. Words in parentheses are generally my comments. Happy hunting. Hello everyone, I am continueing with reports about some people that some of us have been researching lately. There has been discussion recently about the name of Rosanna Vincent Jarrett's second husband. A cemetery list for the Muddy Creek Presbyterian Church lists her in row 12 #3. It says that she is Rosannah Vincent Jarrett Duffa. She was b. Feb. 1, 1779 and d. August 1864. Jarrett Wood has already told me that he had viewed the actual tombstone and found the spelling as it is listed in the cemetery list. I have also found the spelling of her husband's name, in the "Hamilton Papers", which I am currently reviewing. Marilyn Schuelzky said in her letter, that Jacob Hamilton m. Delilah Jarrett. "Her father was James Jarrett, who married twice. His last wife was Rosanna Vincent, and she afterwards married a Duffey." So, that gives us another spelling for the name. Previously I believe I found his name spelled Duffy, in the Marriage CD. [Can be more specific if needed]. Several other sources [researchers] have spelled the name Duffy. Another question concerns where James Jarrett's family came from. Jarrett Wood feels pretty sure that James's family came from PA, and I believe plans to do a research trip to PA, in the near future to see what he can find out. Other Jarrett researchers seem to have no information about the parents of James Jarrett I or Sr. I do show three other brothers for James Jarrett I/Sr. Marilyn Schuelzky goes on to report that "the Jarrett family were French Huguenots who left France because of their religion." [I would be happy to know of any discussion or verification of this fact.] James Jarrett I was found in Greenbrier Co. VA. in the late 1700's. I do not have a birth place for him. Happy for any additions or corrections. Hi Stephanie, Sorry that this took so long to respond to. Actually, I may not have had the information at the time, but "God provides". Thanks to Betty Moutray, I am able to try to provide some clues to solving your questions. I plan to write a series of reports on this family and our connections to it. Will start by listing the children that are listed in "The Hamilton Papers", which were sent to me by Betty. Am always happy for corrections and additions. My information is only as good as the information that I use for compiling these reports. :-) As with other families, I notice that there are apparently some discrepancies and incorrect information. So, hopefully, I will give you the most correct information. By the time I get done, I will have answered my own question, and yours also, I hope. Here are the children who are listed for Major William Hamilton and his wife Isobella Clemmons/Clements: These are apparently listed in age, from oldest male to youngest male. The girls are not necessarily in order. John Hamilton William Hamilton Andrew Hamilton according to report, he was an old bachelor. All of the Major's children married except for Andrew. However; there is a story about a child he had by a girl who lived with them and took care of Ruth Hamilton's grandmother. Jacob Hamilton m. Delilah Jarrett dau. of James Jarrett and Rosanna Vincent of Greenbrier Co. VA. Polly m. Robert Renick III Martha m. William Skiles [brother of Henry Skiles] Elizabeth m. Henry Skiles Ruth Sally m. John Hunter and later John Mathews I will let this list go. Can any Hamilton researchers verify these children and spouses from the "Hamilton Papers"? I will try to make reports on various family members, including some cute stories. Some of it is confusing, because as in other families, names are so repeated. Will report more later. This information takes some digesting to be sure that we are placing the people correctly. :-) I also see some information about Ruth Hamilton Carlin, that she is granddaughter of Major William Hamilton and Isobell Clements. Her father was John Hamilton, who died when she was 4 years old, and she was raised by her grandparents. She had three husband's including Madison Jarrett, a brother of Delilah Jarrett. So, am I right in thinking that Ruth above, listed as a child of the Major's was actually his granddaughter? I believe that I have some information on lineage of Ann Hamilton, which is apparently Margaret's line. I found it in my "files". And Becki requested information about this family some time ago. Found her message in my files. Hope my reports will add something for her, as well. Please, Hamiltons, feel free to jump in here, and add or correct. I am very interested in this line, but only have some information here. Don't have personal knowledge. Stephanie, Let me think a little more about your Sarah and William. I have different marriage dates etc. for them, from the Archer association. I have a Sarah Hamilton, who married William Renick. She had a brother William Hamilton, and a father of William. I am still trying to merge them with the rest of the family. Can anyone help? Who does this Andrew connect to? Thanks for all help. Descendants of Andrew Hamilton Generation No. 1 1. "I have been studying the Renick Book with regards to the BF Renick and Evelyn information, which you presented to the list recently. Can you tell me, if the William H. Hamilton, father of Mary Hamilton, who married Robert Renick III, and William Hamilton, brother of Sarah Hamilton, and son of Andrew, the same William Hamilton? I believe both are described as being Maj. William Hamilton. Thanks for any help. I would like to be able to merge them in the program, if I am correct in this. " I am working on my Hamilton line. I have a Sarah Hamilton that married William Renick 25 Dec. 1790 in Greenbrier Co., VA. I thought this was the same family you were talking about in your post since Sarah had a brother William, and is the daughter of Andrew. The Maj. William Hamilton, if this Sarah's brother, I have nothing about except he was born in 1786. Any help with this line would be appreciated. Recently, I became interested in the Sigmon and Walker families through a query that I saw, which indicated that Walker family may have married Indian women. Hello Listers, During my recent research efforts, I have focused on the fact that the Legg, Vincent, Walker, families had quite a few incidences of Twins. Does anyone know if other families who relate to these lines have twins occuring often in their lines? This is just an interesting thing to know and take notice of for our records, especially those who are keeping health records. I understand that the trait is a hereditary one. Hello Everyone, I have finished the writing of the newsletter for this month. I have been very quiet lately, but I have been doing some research. Hope to catch you up on it. Have found some very interesting information out, about families which may link into your lines. Richard Legg told me an interesting story about Shields Sigmon. He married Elizabeth J. Reece, as well as Margaret Harper. I mentioned Margaret's son James in a previous e-mail. Richard says that Shields Sigmon married Margaret Harper in 1892. He fathered several illegitimate children with Margaret. This resulted in Margaret losing the Civil War Pension of her first husband, William H. Legg. When she applied for the Pension based upon her second husband's service [Shield Sigmon], Shield used the information to get this request disapproved. One son of Shield's and Margaret, William Dayton Sigmon, went by the name of "Tan Legg", in reference to his illegitimate birth. From this story, I have a feeling that a separation may have occured between Shield and Margaret. Anyone know more about this? Also, does anyone have the parents of Margaret Harper? I have several Harpers in my files, who have married into the lines. Would be nice to connect them. Hope you found this story interesting.
