Joyce, Do you find any Wickline, Carson, Ragland, or Maggert/Maggard names in the book? Thanks. ...jane
Hi Joyce and List, Thanks for your offer of a look-up in Apprentices in VA. Please check for Casteel/Castile. I have the following: Greenbrier Court of Wednesday, April 25, 1787: Ordered that John Castile be Bound to Jacob Riffe according to Law. This John Casteel/Castile b Greenbrier 1778. His parents/siblings/friends are unknown, in fact, this is a 30+ yr brick wall. He is listed in the 1799 Greenbrier Tax List. Then disappears until he marries Elenor Metcalf in Madison Co KY 1804. Thanks a bunch,.........Leoneita
I am willing to do lookups in this book, for the next two weeks. This book is indexed and includes the "masters", as well as the "apprentices". There are no Livesays, Renick, McClung, Legg, Jarrett. There is one Vincent mentioned. A John Vincent was a master for Robert Marshall Beginning date, was 2/4/1687 Ending date: unspecified sex: male Occupation: Tailor Race: White Source: Charles City, Co. Orders 1687-1695 p. 108
In this book, called "Apprentices of VA", there is an Elizabeth Bowen, unspecified occupation, and parent not noted, Augusta Co. VA Joyce in CA <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3231/">Our Extended Family </A>
Hello, I have a book, called "Apprentices of Virginia 1623-1800, which I got from the RGS library. I will have it for two weeks. The counties that I am reporting on are very closely related, I believe. I know that there are Anderson researchers in Greenbrier Co. so will hope that some of these names, might be familiar. I will list the name and father's name, and if you want more on any of them, let me know. 1. Andrew Anderson Father: Andrew Anderson occupation: Apothecary Williamsburg, VA. 2. Elizabeth Anderson no parent noted unspecified occupation Augusta Co. VA 3. John Anderson (age 22) Father: William Anderson Occupation: Weaver Shenandoah Co. 4. William Anderson Mother: Barbara Anderson Augusta Co. VA I see some other Andersons in other counties, such as Norfolk, Princess Anne, Frederick, Richmond City etc. I only gave a little of the info, which usually includes dates of service, occupation, race, age etc. If you need that, let me know. Happy Hunting. Joyce in CA. <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3231/">Our Extended Family </A>
Hello Listers, Awhile back someone asked about a Jacob Riffe, I believe who may have been an Indentured servant. I have had such a confusion of mail, again, and apparently misplaced the message, so hopefully this reaches the right person, or anyone else interested in the Riffe family. I am not researching this family, but knew of a book at the RGS library. I finally got hold of it. Turns out that it is a book about Apprentices, instead of indentures. I looked up Jacob Riffe, and did not find him, not too surprising, considering that he was apparently not an apprentice. I am wondering where the line is drawn between an indentured servant and an apprentice...was it just because the indentured was paying off someone, for a bill? Either way, it appears to me, that people served "masters" and did not seem to get much pay. And they both served a period of time. It is interesting that in this book, there are six year old children as apprentices, as well as women, with an undefined area of study. In thinking about this, I suppose I am correct in concluding that the position of an apprentice could be used to fill the gaps when the man of the house died, leaving small children, or women, who were in need of protection. Perhaps someone else knows more about this than I do. I will try to list some names, which you might be interested in, in another message. Lynne, We're happy to do last name look-ups for those interested in purchasing any of the titles we carry. Just let us know the names you're looking for & we'll see if they are listed. The History of Greenbrier County does have some family history in it, but it is more a good overall history of the county. Greenbrier Pioneers & Their Homes (as well as Pioneers & Their Homes on the Upper Kanawha, both by Ruth Woods Dayton) contains information about selected families, including drawings & photographs of their homes. Several of the family books, such as A Chronicle of the Stalnaker Family or Larry Shuck's "Our Families" contain a good deal of genealogical info on many different families. Also the History of Monroe County contains some good genealogical info on Greenbrier & Monroe Families. You can find info on purchasing these items at the Museum Store at the Society's web site: http://web.mountain.net/~ghs/ghs.html Joy Mott ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynne Hundley <[email protected]> To: Joy Mott <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 26, 1999 4:26 AM Subject: Re: Greenbrier County History > Joy, do you do last name look-ups? Just a note to correct this last notice. "A History of Greenbrier County" by Otis Rice is only available from the Greenbrier Historical Society, who published it as an important fundraiser for preservation of Greenbrier County records and history. McClain Printing, which does publish some very fine histories, was the printer we used for this book. I asked a similar question this week, following up information in Civil War pension applications, and discovered a wonderful new series by Time-Life Books: "Voice of the Civil War." It has an account of the battles, good maps, reports from generals etc, and letters from ordinary soldiers. Check your local library to see if they have it. Sometimes you have to do a bit of investigation before you can use it: 1) You need to know which campaign your battle was in (usually you can figure that out from a general civil war book or perhaps an encyclopedia article). The series is divided into books by the campaign. 2) You need to know what else the battle was called. I was looking for Gaines' Mill, which was a major battle but generally called by other names: Old Cold Harbor and Chickahominy. 3) If you don't know what else the battle was called, you can find it by the date and then look at the battle maps. Hi Linda: In a message dated 5/25/99 7:51:16 AM, [email protected] you provided the following paternal ancestral line: << Paternal: William Anderson +Hannah James Clendenin 1738-about 1815 +Margaret Anderson 1742-1805 Charles Francis Boggs 1754-about 1837 +Mary Clendenin 1761-1853 James Clendenin Boggs +Mary Lemasters >> Although this is not my direct line, my records show that Mary CLENDENIN was also married to Francis BOGGS. Do you have any idea if Charles Francis BOGGS was related to Francis BOGGS? I was also wondering about James Clendenin BOGGS and Mary LEMASTER. I show that the Francis BOGGS listed above was also the son of James and Mary. Here are my notes, which I got from a Kindred Konnection GedCom provided by Thomas O. Miller. I tried to email Thomas awhile back but got no response. But I sent this message to a Mary Sue Mason, who researches Vinson/Vincent family in that county. We once found a probable connection to my Michael Vincent, from the Greenbrier Co. VA area, in White Co. Tenn. Michael married a Tinsley. So far, we have not tied more of our Greenbrier Co. area Vincents to White Co. Tenn, but it is possible. Since the Legg family in Greenbrier Co. connects to the Vincents in Greenbrier Co. VA, it is quite possible that your Judith may also tie in here....all just speculation. Archibald Hall [1801-??] in Greenbrier Co., WV in 1850 census. Seeking any information on this family. Thank you. Keith A. Hall Roanoke, VA
Sorry about the blank email. I am getting absent minded!!!! The best place is the Greenbrier Historical Society. Greenbrier Historical Society web site at http://access.mountain.net/~ghs/ghs.html email address [email protected] and you want to click on the MUSEUM STORE. Good Luck. Lori
Please note that the name for the the superintendent of schools "W. F. Lawrence, 1891-'95" is wrong. I've seen it wrong in other books, as well. It should be W. F. Lowance. He was my great-great grand uncle. Bill Johnson Harrisburg, PA
