    3. Joyce, The book was published by Waltham Publishing Company with the help of the Greenbrier Heritage Committee, several of whom were members of the historical society. However, the society did not publish or sponsor the book. At the time, the society had two other book projects in the works & didn't have enough staff to publish it. If you need more info on the book, you might contact Waltham Publishing. (Sorry, don't have an e-mail address for them.) 3. Joyce, I have an Elihu Ellis (b. ca 1799) m. Elizabeth See (b. ca 1793 in Greenbrier Co, d/o John and Margaret Jarrett See. They went to Indiana ca 1820s with extended See family. Elihu shows up a couple of Indiana Census records and I think dies in Grant Co. Haven't confirmed any of this. Does this fit in with any of your VA Ellis family? 1. Burns
    2. Hi Nancy, How are you? I have a feeling that what you want to know is : "Is Burns another spelling for BRUNS? BRUNS is another of the names I research on my side of the family. If so, I think they are separate families. I do have some Bruns in Va/Ky etc. but so far find no connection to the Burns that I have. These are the Burns that we connect to. Loura's mother was Delilah Vincent b. 1832. Her father was Andrew McClung. Course they were from the Greenbrier area as well. Are they familiar? My husband seems very related to these Burns. 1. [WVGREENB-L] 1844 Marriage
    2. Hi, I have a marriage date for my gggrandparents in Greenbrier County. James SCOTT and Elinor SHORT were married April 17, 1844. They are listed on the 1850 Greenbrier County census and then appear on the 1870 Braxton County census. I would like to know if my ggrandfather, William Anderson Scott (b1845), was born in Greenbrier County. I would also like to know who the parents of James and Elinor were. I have reached a stumbling block with this family and hope that someone out there might have some information. Thanks so much. Karen

    1. [WVGREENB-L] James W. Thomas/Mary - Marriage 1873
    2. Thanks for the information on this marriage. The dates seem to match. I did locate James W. Thomas on the 1880 census with wife Mary. James' age was 41 (b. 1839) and Mary age 37 (b. 1843). The information on the marriage of James Wm. Thomas on 24 Dec 1873 in Greenbrier has the groom age 35 (b. 1838) and Mary M. Lewis age 32 (b. 1841). Does anyone have more information on this marriage - who were the parents?? My initial query was for marriage information on: James Woods Thomas, b. 1838 in Greenbrier wife Mary McCreary b. 1843 ??? in 1880 they were in the Union District of Monroe County. Thanks! Karen

    3. Hi Folks, I had a wonderful trip to Greenbrier County during Memorial Weekend! We visited the Greenbrier Historical Society, McElhenney, Wallace Memorial and Forren Cemeteries. For those of you that know me, you know I've been trying to get to the Forren Cemetery on Keeney's Knob for two years. My cousin guided us up the mountain and I was able to take photographs of all of the stones there. I have two sets of Great Grandparents buried there: Henry Charles FORREN and his wife Cynthia HARRAH Forren, and John L. LOWRY and his wife, Elizabeth HUFFMAN Lowry. I will be putting headstone photos and transcriptions of the cemeteries on-line soon. The FORREN cemetery is complete, but I only have partial transcriptions from Wallace and McElhenney. (There are large cemeteries.) We also visited the BOWLES Cemetey in Summers County. I have a complete transcription and photos and will be putting it on-line also. I enjoyed my trip and hope to get back to Greenbrier soon. I am always amazed at how beautiful this area is, and I know that is one of the reasons my ancestors chose to settle there. Have a great day! Valerie

We have him on Pa Census reports. Our Ellis family is from Tioga, Bradford Co. Pa and surrounding areas. I also have some Ellis from VA in my files. I have an Andrew Ellis, who married Mary Alderson. Elizabeth Ellis married Joseph McClung. There are various other Ellis people in my files from VA, if you are interested. I also know a good Ellis researcher who exclusively researches Ellis- five lines of them, which are around PA, NY, NJ. One line comes from England, he says. As for "Apprentices of VA", I do not see Edward. I do find a James Ellis, master of Agnes McComes. His occupation is unspecified. Beginning date, 1753, ending date is unspecified. It was in Augusta Co. VA. Agnes's father was David McComes [deceased]. Source was: Augusta Parish Vestry Book 1746-1780. You will find my PA Ellis family on the Family Treemaker site. I did not think there was such a thing anymore but I recieved a certificate from the Bureau of Labor indicating I had completed my apprenticeship and was now a journeyman firefighter.
