Hi! Found your name as a Lewis researcher on the Greenbrier Web site. I am trying to locate the parents of Mary M. Lewis, born about 1846 that married James William Thomas on Dec 24 1873. James had been married once before to Nancy Atkinson and she died in 1871 in Kanawha County. James' father was David Anderson Thomas. In the family records, Mary's name was Mary McCreary! I had seen the marriage of James William Thomas to Mary M. Lewis, and had thought it was a possibility. But this was confirmed when I located the birth record of one of their sons! Mary would have been 32 years old when she married James. Her name on their son's birth record seems to read Mary Mc Thomas. These are my questions: 1) Could her maiden name have been Mary McCreary Lewis? 2) Could she have been married once before? A possibility since she was 32? 3) Was she the daughter of sheriff, John E. Lewis? She and her husband moved to Summers County around 1900. James died in Hinton in 1914 and she died sometime before him. I believe they are both buried at the Hilltop Cemetery in Summers County, which I would also like to find out more about! Any help with this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Karen Florida

I need some help. I am looking for information on the parents of Mary M. Lewis that married James W. Thomas (son of David Anderson Thomas) on December 24, 1873 in Greenbrier. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karen
Dear Heather, Your Lain Jones would be a contemporary of my John W. Jones [no sibs known] who was part of a clan in the Greenbrier/Webster/Nicholas County areas of current WV. John Jones and Catherine Donaldson's children were: Elizabeth, Caleb, Richard, William, Franklin, Margaret, Ruth, Catherine, Charles, and John Williams Jones. Family tradition says I'm missing at least 4 children. John's parents were Richard Jones and Nancy Williams [of Indian abduction fame]. They were married in 1792. Richard's father and grandfather were William and Thomas Jones. Does this tie in with any of your family? Charles & Amy named three of their nine Children Franklin (my Great Grandfather shot & killed as a police officer in Kanawha Co. in 1881), (Commodore) Perry & (William) Irvin. In the 1850 VA Census in Kanawha Co., VA there was a Perry (age 27 living with his Family in the household of a Thomas HILL) & a Merryman HUFFMAN (age 26 with Family) & an Efhriam (age 54 with Family) all living next to each other. Hi Carol, and List, [ I am sending this to lists and will offer the same info to anyone on the list.] How are you? Well I may have a bit more information for you, today. I really have a lot of Osborn/Osbornes in my files. They married into a bunch of the families that my husband connects to or is related to. He relates, I think to families where the Osborn/Osbornes married Brown, Legg, Renick, Cart/Carte, Jarrett, Backhouse, Livesay, Shamblin, and Taylor to name the main ones, as well as the one who married a Hammersley. Do you have the information from the World Family Tree, vol 3, on the Osbornes which includes your George and Susannah Fleshman? I made an FTW out of that information and would gladly send you an attachment, if you don't have the information. I am not sure how many of the Osbornes that I have are actually connected. George is the last one in his line, which connects to our Jarrett line, which of course connects way back to the Vincents. Would be happy to send a gedcom, FTW, RTF, doc or whatever, if you want any of the information. Think I have seen the name Fleshman in the Greenbrier Book [ p. 48, but don't have that page] There are some Osbornes mentioned in the Greenbrier Heritage 97 book, [some copies] that I have, but nothing looked familiar. Vol 7 of the KVGS book [Kanawha Co. lists a Julia Ann Osborne lineage, but there is no info on her directly, though a descendent line is given. Happy hunting. BTW, this message is an example of what happens if you contact me again. Sometimes I will rethink what I have told you and find other information that I did not have time to look up or couldn't find at that moment. :-) Joyce in CA. Our Extended Family In a message dated 7/30/99 3:20:45 AM !!!First Boot!!!, [email protected] writes: << Subj: Re: [WVKANAWH-L] Ties to Oregon Date: 7/30/99 3:20:45 AM !!!First Boot!!! I find researching Osbornes is a tad confusing because (I believe) they liked two names so much that every son was named the same---George or John. According to my research my George Osborne was born in Greenbrier County (W)VA then moved to Kanawha and then to Roane County (W) VA. His birthdate, 1792 /m. Susanna Fleshman b. 1794 in. Monroe Co. (W) VA. Who George's parents were, I do not know. There is some indication Osbornes were of Norse origin, then to England etc. My Osbornes came to America ( three brothers) or at least that has been handed down generation to generation. >>
I have not heard of the Hendrickson name since I saw it in correspondence years ago. There was a brief story you may be interested in and perhaps others could elaborate on it. Jennie Williams Dye [1866-1949] told the story that a Mr. Hendrickson used to come to her house when she was a little girl [?1870's]. He would walk over from Nicholas County and spend the evenings talking to her parents [Albert Gallatin Williams and Elizabeth Adelaide Donnally of Duo, Greenbrier County.] He may have been an ex-school teacher and was depressed about a self defense killing he had been involved in. Her story was that he had very poor sight and he was the butt of local bullies' abuse. One night he was attacked by a drunken man and used his pocket knife to defend himself. Apparently the court did not believe there was anything but self-defense, but he was disheartened by it, and carried the guilt for the rest of his life. Is this any of your kin? Joyce, I have written to you before re: Jarrett family (I'm descended from David, brother of James) through the Sees but have recently found out that a totally unrelated side of the family is also from Greenbrier or Kanawha. This is Andrew Hayzlett and Elizabeth Hughart. Info I have (though NOT proven) is that this Elizabeth is daughter of Andrew Hughart and Catherine Black. Andrew MAY be son of James Hughart "Hugart" and Agnes whose will is dated 31 Dec 1789. Do you have any infor on an Andrew Hughart m. Catherine Black? I found an Andrew Hughart in Cabell Co in 1820 VA census index ( a number of others in Greenbrier also-but no Andrew.) 1810 VA census index listed only Hugharts in Bath Co--none in Greenbrier. Hi Lorna, Thanks so much for the information about Lavolette Livesay/Livesey's family, and the census info. I hope you don't mind my forwarding it to some people who might also be interested in this information. I am still questioning whether Lavolett' first name was Elizabeth or Lavolett. One information has it Elizabeth and another has it Lavolett as the first name. It is interesting that she went by Lavolett in the 1880 Census. With a name like that, I would have thought she would have gone by Elizabeth. :-) I am assuming that Frankford is in Greenbrier Co. That is where she was apparently born. Lavolette Livesay line goes back to our Peter Livesay/Livesey and Mary Legg. Some of the McClintics also marry into the McClungs, so am forwarding this there, in case someone there is interested. Hello Nancy, Did I ever mention to you, that I did check the Greenbrier book for information about James C. Hughart and his family? Unfortunately, I don't seem to have all the pages, that would have info about hugharts. I just have some copies of the book, and a lot of it pertains more to the McClungs than it does to other branches, though there are lots of misc. people on these pages. :-) I found a James Hughart who married an Elizabeth Williams, on p. 182. Would you happen to know which James that would be? He is found in a list of David William's second wife, Elizabeth Margaret McMillion. She was the mother of Elizabeth. Hello, I am looking for information on the family of Margaret Osborn Brown Harvey. Okay, I know that is quite a long list of surnames, but Margaret Osborn m. John Brown ca, 1823 in Charlotte County VA, then in 1843, she married Frederick Harvey in Greenbrier County. Fred & Margaret had children: Elwood Harvey, Henry Clinton Harvey, and one other son. Henry Clinton Harvey's daughter, Blanche, married a Zickafoose. It is believed descendants of Henry Clinton still reside in Greenbrier County. If you have any info on this family, I would appreciate it if you shared. Thanks, Betty Allen
