    2. Mark Patten
    3. Mike - I'm not sure I can directly help you, but I do have a few tidbits that some others may be be able to add some more information. James Stewart who married Ann Lafferty was the brother of Elizabeth Stewart. I believe they came to America together or one followed the other. Elizabeth married Ralph Lafferty in Scotland ca 1739. It's interesting that James married a Lafferty - I wonder if there was a relation to Ralph Lafferty - almost assuredly so - probably a sister. Like I said, not sure that helps but you never know... From: NPeters102@aol.com To: WVGREENB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: John & Ralph Stuart/Stewart Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 00:20:03 EST Am trying to find a possible link between John Stuart & Ralph Stewart -- both veterans of the Revolutionary War. Both men were among the listed participants of the Battle of Point Pleasant which is now recognized as the first battle of the American Revolution. According to information I read on the Greenbrier County, WV GenWeb page: "John Stuart was the son of David Stuart and Margaret Lynn, a kinswoman of Margaret Lynn who married John Lewis, of County Donegal, Ireland, the father of Andrew and Thomas Lewis, of Augusta County. John Stuart was employed by John Lewis in locating land in West Virginia, and finally settled on Greenbrier River. He was frequently engaged in Indian wars, was a member of the House of Delegates during the Revolution, and for more than a quarter of a century was county clerk. He was also county lieutenant of Greenbrier County, and in 1788 was a member of the State Convention called to pass upon the Federal Constitution and voted for its adoption. He married about 1774 Agatha, widow of John Frogg, of Augusta, and daughter of Thomas Lewis, son of John Lewis." Ralph Stewart was born to the union of James Stewart & Ann Lafferty. According to an article co-authored by James Edward Stewart and Winton Guy Covey, Jr., in the Mercer County History: "Ralph Stewart was born about 1747 (or even as late as 1752) on Sturat's (Stewart's) Run of the Cowpasture River, Augusta County (now Bath County), Virginia. He died in 1835. In 1769, Ralph married first Mary Elliot. Their family consisted mostly of sons. When and where Mary died seems to be unknown. "According to Ralph, he moved from Augusta County to the New River area shortly after the Revolutionary War. He settled land adjacent to Mitchell Clay in 1785. On 15 June 1788 in Montgomery County, Virginia, Ralph Stuart married 16 year-old Mary Clay, the daughter of Mitchell and Phoebe (Belcher) Clay. "In 1791, Ralph and family moved to Wolf Creek (now Giles County), where they bought 100 acres of land. In 1799, they moved to Brush Creek (now Mercer County) and bought 125 acres. In 1806, they moved to Cranny Fork (now Wyoming County), where it seems he lived as a squatter, never owning any land. In 1823, his poverty and war wound earned him a state pension of $60 per year, which he drew until he received a federal soldier's pension, also $60.   "Military service VA No. 23949 No. W. 6168. He was commissioned a captain in 1773 by Lord Dunsmore, Governor of Virginia. Ralph serviced as a ranger and was at Point Pleasant under General Lewis in the Battle of 1774. His commission was renewed by Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia, in 1778. He was ordered with his company to South Carolina to join the army under General Green, and was attached to a regiment commanded by Colonel Robert McCleary and Major Smith. He fought at Guilford Courthouse, Hot Water, Ground Squirrel Ridge, Charlottesville, and was at the siege of Yorktown, being placed by General Washington as a guard for the cave in which General Cornwallis was held prisoner. "Ralph received a soldier's pension in 1834, and his widow received a pension in 1846. At that time, Mary was 74 years old. Supporting evidence for the claim was submitted by Edward Burgess, Patience Chapman, Mitchell Clay, Francis Hendrix, Charles L. Clay, and Rev. Richard Brooks." Can anyone help find a possible connection between John Stuart & Ralph Stewart? I look forward to hearing from you.
