    2. Can someone please tell me if known if William Conrad and wife Roanna Murphy are buried in Gilmer County, West Virginia. William died September 25, 1861 in Allegheny County, Virginia. I have no information when Roanna died. Does anyone have a photograph of the tombstone that you could share with me if there is one at all.   Thank you.   John W. Pegg

    1. [WVGILMER] Cherokee Indians giving away their babies
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: hcorine Surnames: Abraham Dawson, Hannah Jane Helmick, Minnie Pegley Classification: birth Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.gilmer/1584/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Has anyone heard of the Cherokee Indians giving their babies to the white settlers in Gilmer County? Reason asking, we have been told that my great-grandmother - Minnie Dawson Pegley was "adopted" informally and that she was Cherokee. She was raised by Abraham Dawson and Hannah Jane Helmick Dawson. Her birth certificate lists them as her parents but when you look at photos of her and her three sisters there is a distant difference in appearance. Thanks, Corine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dhazel1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.gilmer/1580.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Courtesy lookup - not my family. I couldn't find Samantha WORKMAN in Cabell Co., WV, or Lawrence County, OH - what are your sources for this statement? She does not appear on any censuses in either place. Vitals on Ruah: Born Ruah Catherine WORKMAN, born 1878-79, Nicholas County, WV, according to 1880 census & her marriage cert dated 1 March 1895, Lewis County. Her death certificate and tombstone said she was born 19 May 1876, but she was age one year old in 1880, so I believe that date is wrong. You don't mistake a 4 year old child with an infant! Her father was Benjamin WORKMAN, born April 1852, and her mother was Clarinda ADKINS, born 1861. Hope this helps? Laura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
