    3. My, my, don't we all wish e-mail address could remain the same. (I don't want to list all my e-mail changes since I started in '96.) We sometimes leave the out-of-date ones - hoping the volunteer will eventually share the new address - and sometimes others actives on the sites provide the change. When we have time we do a Google - hoping a recent query might provide the new address. As someone who has been a volunteer coding web pages since ''97 and the original Roots Web - we OFTEN make the decision NOT to remove the link as we frequently get an up-date or a new volunteer - AS IT IS A REMINDER. Most likely a complaint will come from a newbie - who believes the someone has ALL their genealogy, doesn't want to use his own time in genealogy, and is a recent computer user. Successful genealogists all eventually learn that genealogy milestones come with patience and perseverance. That's why I like - "Links to external web sites are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement or approval of any of the products, services or opinions contained in any external web site." Most volunteers do check their links with regularity. It's just we can't keep up with the changes/drops of visitors and their ISPs with ESP. ;-) At 08:24 AM 7/29/2006, you wrote: >Will you please pass this message on to your state lists? > >Thanks > >Linda Haas Davenport >NC USGenWeb Project > >----- Original Message ----- >From: umpire@sbcglobal.net >To: lhaasdav@cox.net >Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 5:55 PM >Subject: Updates > > >I have gone to several county sites in several different states >and found that for the lookup volunteers the email addresses are >not working or good addresses. 3. Hi all, Changing e-mail addresses are a continual headache for us. Since they are contact points for researchers I will probably continue to wait for a researcher to notify me that an address is bad, rather than go about checking them myself periodically. The most involved researchers will let me know when their addresses change. If someone is interested in reaching them and finds a bad address, they too will write to me. Wouldn't this result in the most efficient maintenance of e-mail addresses? I think one of the lessons you learn in doing family history research is persistence and I'm happy to help! My worst problem comes from bad addresses on the "Surnames" pages or in old queries. When someone alerts me to them, I have done a couple things with some success: I list bad addresses at the head of the "Surnames" page with plea to the owners to send new ones to me; and I post queries from persons wanting to contact the researcher with a nonworking address stating that the e-mail address does not work. On this 10th Anniversary I may do a little page reorganization and put up a "Bad Address" page... I too will leave the lookup volunteer's name and e-mail up with the book up until I get a note with a "resignation" or change of address. Seems like a good idea to leave up the source even WITHOUT a volunteer to perhaps inspire someone else to adopt it. I'll try that.
