Hi Bill. The reason for the discussion are due to the actions of the new parent company of Ancestry.com over the past two months or so. Some states have been on other servers for several years including PA, KS and TN. There are several other states that are either moving or talking of moving. It is not an effort to break away from the USGenWeb Project but an effort to prevent having banners on every page that leads the public to think that we are owned by Ancestry. The AB is trying to negotiate something to keep these banner off or change the wording that is used. They had added the banners to two states before the uproar caused them to remove them until this is settled. We are trying to be prepared. Even if the state page is moved, there will not be a requirement that any or every county has to move. Each county has always had the right to decide where to host their counties. There are a few WVGenWeb counties that have been on pa-roots.com for many years. I agree that Rootsweb was good to us for a long time but I feel that it started going downhill before the first ten years were up. When they took the Message Boards that we were using and combined them with the Ancestry.com Boards, they destroyed something that had been very useful to my county site. Each of their efforts to "improve" these Message Boards since them have made them harder to use for many people. Funeral Homes that were posting all their obituaries to the Message Boards. They have all quit because the job of posting was made so much more difficult or impossible for them. That is sad as it is a loss for future researchers.
