Naomi and I are totally worn out and need a good nights sleep. Sorry that I was not able to forward or send any original email messages to the list from the Project or any place else. Had a DSL connection at the place we stayed but Citynet refused all email that I tried to send out. Les

    1. LOGOS on Ballot!
    2. Linda Barton
    3. To All SEMA CC's: A VERY IMPORTANT issue, that will directly affect all of us as county hosts is on this years ballot and that is the selection of new logos for The USGenWeb Project. The Advisory Board took a poll several months ago and it was narrowly decided that we should have 4 logos instead of one and that a contest would be held to select the new logos. Before you make your selection of a logo take a few minutes and think about what a logo should be and all of the places that it might be used. This new logo will likely be used for many years. Think about how the logo will look not only on your website but on a brochure, a business card or possibly on television. There are many entries but in my opinion there are only a few that meet the criteria of a clear, bold professional logo that a project of our status should have. So look at them all before you vote, think about how they will look on your website and then write down your selection before you go to the ballot to vote. If you know any graphics professionals - get their advice on how these will work on our websites if they are resized or if they are used in print. Go to the USGenWeb Project pages and see how your choice will look on those pages along with the newly designed banner - http://www.usgenweb.com/index.shtml The logo entries are found here http://usgenweb.org/logos/index.shtml The EC has pointed out in their messages that you MUST write down the numbers of the logo you select before opening your ballot as you may NOT be able to return to the ballot if you go back to take a peek at the logos again in the same browser window. PLEASE be careful about this as you don't want to be shut out of voting on the rest of the ballot if this occurs. The EC volunteers who can help you if you have any problems or questions are: Deb Haines - ilgrundy@earthlink.net for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, South Carolina, Tennessee. and Nola Duffy - nduffy@patch.net for D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia I would also be glad to answer any questions you have or try to direct you to the correct person. 2. This is from Suzanne Shephard. I can forward in the usual way due to being in Hot Springs, AR. Les Hi, I'm Suzanne Shephard and as a candidate for the Southeastern/Mid-Atlantic County Coordinator Representative, I would like to have your vote! I am a county coordinator of six county sites in Kentucky and one in Virginia and am a past coordinator with GAGenWeb. I am list mom for two mailing lists, and two message boards and I am the coordinating chairperson for the KYGenWeb Records Repository. I am a CC through and through --- I want to represent my fellow coordinators on this Advisory Board and use my many years of working as a CC volunteer to make sure our focus is on the true backbone of this organization, the County Coordinators of the USGenWeb. I believe in honesty, integrity, communication and fairness and I feel that I can make a difference by bringing these qualities to the table of USGenWeb. I firmly believe that we need to get back to the basic premise of this project and that the county coordinators are, in fact, the backbone of the USGenWeb. We have strayed away from the fact that the CCs in this project are volunteers. We do this because we love genealogy. And we have allowed this project to become more like a business led by a small group instead of being led by the coordinators that make the project possible! § If I am elected, I promise to always keep the best interests of my fellow coordinators in front of everything else. § I will always do what ever is in my power to competently and honestly represent you. § I will always listen to your suggestions and I will ask your opinions. They matter! § I will always keep an open communication between myself and my fellow CCs. § I will always do my best to serve you and preserve the ideals that created this project. § All projects such as this one must have rules. And I will always work to make sure these rules help and not hinder our abilities as coordinators. These are the qualities and promises that I will bring to the position of SEMA CC Representative, if elected. If you have any questions regarding my candidacy or personal information, please contact me at syshephard@charter.net You have the privilege and the right to make your personal choice for the positions open in this election. Make your voice heard in the USGenWeb.Please Vote!! Thank you, Suzanne http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyhenry/candidate.htm

    1. Amendment to Bylaws on Ballot
    2. Linda Barton
    3. Fellow SEMA CC's: Please make sure you read this proposed amendment carefully before you vote. The intended purpose, I believe, was to remove the requirement in our bylaws for a representative from a census project to sit on the Advisory Board. This seat has been vacant for several years since the census project was removed as a special project of The USGenWeb Project by a previous NC. In addition to cleaning up this point in the Bylaws - which we had been in violation of for several years - it also removes the seat filled by a Tombstone Project representative and leaves one seat on the advisory board which will be filled by someone representing ALL special projects. Discussions took place on this proposal in January of this year and this link is to a post by Cyndie Enfinger which points out the membership numbers in all areas of the project - http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOARD/2005-01/1107138264 So, in order to be compliant with the Bylaws by removing the census project rep seat on the board, we also have an amendment which removes the Tombstone project's seat and allows for one seat to represent all special projects. This will reduce the number of reps seated on the advisory board by two. In making your decision on this amendment to the Bylaws it might be helpful to read the accompanying thread of messages to the link above. If you have any questions, feel free to write to me or anyone you know who is a member of a special project to get their views on this amendment. 1. Note from SEMA Rep
    2. Linda Barton
    3. To my fellow County Coordinators, I just want to remind everyone how important it is to vote in the upcoming election. The other SEMA CC Rep position is coming open, Denise Woodside has held that seat and is not running in the current election. Please, go to the election website's Meet the Candidates Page located here http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/national-2005/candidates-index.html. I have learned alot about people in the project by visiting their county websites. Most of the candidates have included links to their websites on their campaign pages inviting you to take a look at their work. I believe those pages are an indication of the level of commitment they have to the project and will have in representing your interests in the project. Another important seat that is up for election is that of RAL or Representative At Large. Everyone in the project votes for this seat and it is a voting seat on the advisory board, so please take the time to get to know those candidates also. Of course, the National Coordinator is being elected and that is a very important position. It is not a voting seat on the Advisory Board but directly affects how the Advisory Board is run among other responsibilities in the project. Again, I can not stress enough how important it is for you to educate yourself about these candidates and vote responsibly. I would imagine that any of you that are interested in the politics of the project already know about the various mailing lists that are important to pay attention to but I will include the links here in case you don't know about all of them. The USGW-DISCUSS List http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/USGenWeb/USGENWEB-DISCUSS.html You may find it easier to browse the archives of this list rather than subscribing to it. You may follow the Advisory Board by reading the archives of Board-L found here http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index There is also a regional mailing list for the SEMA Region found here http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/USGenWeb-SE/ If you are still unsure about someone, ask someone else you know and respect in the project their opinion. There are two other very important items on the ballot this year that I will write more about later. PLEASE VOTE! Linda Blum-Barton SEMA CC Rep -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Hello WV CCs, It is time once again for my annual trip to my Shockey Family reunion. This year we will be in Hot Springs AR for the next five or six days. I will try to check my email if possible. I have ask Valerie to forward the election notices if I am not able to forward them. Seems like I had a problem trying to forward email from Salt Lake City. Please everyone take the time to read the candidates pages carefully. Some of those who are trying to get into office are wanting to make some rather drastic changes. There has been talk of incorporating once again. Some want all CCs to be forced to subscribe to at least one email list where they would have to read all the political trash "so you can be truly informed of what goes on in the Project." Some fell that the SCs have too much power and that major changes need to be made to cut the number of SCs that are elected to the AB. Besides the election of officers we will be voting on a wide choice of possible Project logos. This is going to be a tough choice as there are several good ones. I do not know who was responsible but I was nominated to run as CC Rep for SEMA and also to run for the RAL position. I was deeply honored to be nominated for both but felt that I had not recovered sufficiently to do either job at this time. I did tell the EC that maybe next year things will have changed to the point that I could accept. Les

    1. October: Family History Month
    2. Shari Handley
    3. Dear USGenWeb Coordinators, One of our County Coordinators wrote to me and pointed out that October is "Family History Month" and suggested that this yearly event would be a wonderful opportunity for USGenWeb to promote the concept of free online genealogy. She suggested that perhaps a proclamation could be drafted and sent out by coordinators from the National level on down to counties, to local governmental agencies, newspapers and other media outlets. Other activities may also be fun and helpful in spreading the word about USGenWeb and promoting this hobby of ours. I'd like to form a grass-roots USGenWeb committee to come up with and implement ideas and plans for Family History Month, to brainstorm and facilitate activities and/or materials for USGenWeb nationally, and that State Coordinators and County Coordinators could tap into. If you'd be interesting in participating in this endeavor, please send me an email. Please also indicate whether you'd be willing to chair such a committee. :) Many thanks to Davison County, SDGenWeb Coordinator Andy (Andrea) Sindt for bringing this idea up! 2. Rod & Paulette
    3. Dear State Coordinators, Please consider forwarding this email on to your state mail lists for your CC's. Thank you, Paulette Carpenter Dear USGW Member, It is that time of year again! Elections are coming, and this year, I would like to give every member the opportunity to really get to know the candidates in all categories. Sometimes it is really hard to vote in these elections when we are not given the tools to know the people running and all of the issues on the ballot. This year, we would like to change that. An invitation has been sent to all candidates to join an open Candidate forum. This is where you, as a voting member of the USGW can come and ask the candidates questions in order to get their views on all topics, and so that you can get to know them better. Thanks to Mike St.Clair who provided the space and the software, we have three volunteer members, who are not candidates, who will be administering the forum for you. Wally Garchow (CC for Darke & Preble Co's in OH among others), Alice Gayley (CC for Clearfield, Armstrong & Jefferson Co's in PA) and Donna Allen (CC for Giles Co., TN, Culpeper, Richomond & Rappahnnock Co., VA, McIntosh Co., GA, Moore, Klegerg, Jim Hogg Co's, TX, Co-Coordinator Texas Postcards Project, and Co-Coordinator "Getting Started in Genealogy" a Tennessee Special Project).....Thank you a million times over for caring about your project and your fellow members! The forum is now open for you to register to participate! Please consider joining us at http://election.temp-site.us/profile.php?mode=register. You will be able to ask questions of all candidates in all regions, or you may just observe the Q & A of the candidates by other members. Either way it is a tool designed to help you at Election time! We will also be discussing the proposed Bylaw change in this forum. If you didn't know, the work that the BRC did will not make it to this ballot. So there is one change being proposed, it was sponsored by 5 states. Please come in and take a look at both the good and the bad of the proposed change. I hope to see you there. Your voice and vote matters so much in how this project is run. Remember, this is your project. Please come out and vote. Sincerely, Paulette Carpenter No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
