Hello, At least one of the current AB members is wanting to push for another By-laws review committee. I have expressed my personal opinion of this to all of our regional reps on the AB but I would like to know if any of you see a need for a permanent By-laws review committee. Les
Just a post script: When AOL reviews that page - it will be removed. ISPs have clear rules when you sign an agreement with them. Rootsweb had the same dilemma in the late '90s - whether to let historical and genealogical societies list publications for sale. They eventually gave in - but only non-profit organizations have the privilege that have the legal 501 status. I was a reviewer for NS DAR pages - any reference to any sales - and you were removed until the offending page met the rules of the national organization. And the rules were posted freely for the web page volunteers of the chapters. No excuse. My gut feeling is that AOL had the rules posted when she signed up. That is a very temporary site.
E Gads! AOL, too. It's clearly commercial and not a "personal genealogical web page". If that was my family line, the only thing I could obtain freely is the image of Elijah. ;) And through theft at that. But it does direct any descendants of that family to the newsletter publication and book. Be up front with her. Tell her it's not a "Family Web Page", - it's commercial - and if she ever designs a family web page - you'll be happy to add her link. Hi Brenda, To me what you are describing is not the same as Julie's case. I understand that there was no free information available, only the choice to buy their book. I know that there are others that sell books but they do provide help and free information to go with it. The latter ones I do not have as much of a problem with and I do know that links exist to many of these. Maybe I should have ask Julie if this person does provide free information when queries are posted about a specific branch of the family listed in the book or does she feel that if anyone wants the information, they will have to buy the book. IMHO, the content of your pages is strictly a matter of your own judgment. I tend to agree with you. If you have a "Books" page, that's where the link belongs. Freddie S. Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I do advertise a MyFamily website on the Clay County Site called Portraits of our Clay County Ancestors. There is tons of genealogy information as well as over a thousand photos of Clay County Ancestors on the MyFamily site. People do advertise genealogy related items from time to time but for the most part, the site is just lots of information and photos. The site is free for the members, however, I pay for the server space for the site. My purpose of having the MyFamily site is to share genealogy information including information of living individuals among people with ties to Clay County and to still protect the information from outside sources. I do agree with Julie and Les, that I would not post a site that is primarily a advertising site. Hello All, As someone who has hosted web pages for genealogical societies, historical societies, and the even DAR since '97 - I feel we shouldn't personally censor any web pages that are on the WWW. Our purpose and goal as volunteers (if I remember correctly), is to help any and all family researchers around the counties that we host. Surely we all have links to societies who sell books, or organizations who have charges for services whether it's a minimal charge for tombstone photos or copies of look-ups. So $ clearly isn't the reason. May I make this suggestion to add this at the bottom of ALL your "index" page or any pages with links off site: "Links to external web sites are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement or approval of any of the products, services or opinions contained in any external web site." It has served many organizations which I have belonged and proudly served. It's also visually acceptable and legal. Otherwise, we start sounding like little dictators on the web. Remember - we are volunteers - helping others. Julia A. Krutilla °´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø URLs: Julia A. Hello Julie, It is my understanding that we who host county web pages - are here to help family researchers. And since the person has an ancestor who lived in your county - she has every right for that link to her web page. Rootsweb does not allow posting of any sales without permission. And clearly you do not advertise her sales on your rootsweb site. But wherever "she" maintains her site - she must follow the rules of her ISP or contract. I think the problem extends beyond the sales - and perhaps it's a 'personality conflict'. Sorry, but I think you need to bite the bullet and add her link. I would appreciate some advice on handling this issue. An individual continues to insist that I place the URL to her "family site" on one of my county Family Links pages. Yes, the ancestor in question was a county resident, however, she's selling a book and a newsletter on her site. There is no genealogical information about the ancestor nor his descendants offered in any form other than for sale. I do not feel obligated to post a URL to a site that does not offer info other than the predecessor's name, date of birth and where to purchase the book/newsletter. I will not be doing the Wood County,WV site any longer. My time is needed elsewhere and a resident WV person is probably better suited. Thanks for all the help you have given in my short time with WVGenWeb. Kathie Harrison

The Spirit of Christmas Anonymous I have a list of people I know All written in a book And every year at Christmastime I go and take a look And that is when I realise That those names are a part Not of the book they're written in But of my very heart For each name stands for someone Who has crossed my path some time And in that meeting they've become A treasured friend of mine And once you've met some people The years can not erase The memory of a pleasant word Or a friendly face So when I send a Christmas card That is addressed to you It's because you're on that list Of folk I'm indebted to And you are one of many folk who In times past I've met And happen to be one of those I don't want to forget And whether I have known you for Many years or few In some way you have a part in Shaping things I do This, the spirit of Christmas, that Forever and ever endures May it leave it richest blessing In the hearts of you and yours.
