And you'd be amazed at the number of otherwise sane humans who block "unknown senders" not realizing that includes me and thee not just spammers. OTOH, I must say, since this look-up artist thing started back 10 years ago, I've only had two or three bad addresses and one of those was an amusing typo I'd have seen if I'd looked. Cheryl Julia A. Hi all, Changing e-mail addresses are a continual headache for us. Since they are contact points for researchers I will probably continue to wait for a researcher to notify me that an address is bad, rather than go about checking them myself periodically. The most involved researchers will let me know when their addresses change. If someone is interested in reaching them and finds a bad address, they too will write to me. Wouldn't this result in the most efficient maintenance of e-mail addresses? I think one of the lessons you learn in doing family history research is persistence and I'm happy to help! My worst problem comes from bad addresses on the "Surnames" pages or in old queries. When someone alerts me to them, I have done a couple things with some success: I list bad addresses at the head of the "Surnames" page with plea to the owners to send new ones to me; and I post queries from persons wanting to contact the researcher with a nonworking address stating that the e-mail address does not work. On this 10th Anniversary I may do a little page reorganization and put up a "Bad Address" page... I too will leave the lookup volunteer's name and e-mail up with the book up until I get a note with a "resignation" or change of address. Seems like a good idea to leave up the source even WITHOUT a volunteer to perhaps inspire someone else to adopt it. I'll try that. My, my, don't we all wish e-mail address could remain the same. (I don't want to list all my e-mail changes since I started in '96.) We sometimes leave the out-of-date ones - hoping the volunteer will eventually share the new address - and sometimes others actives on the sites provide the change. When we have time we do a Google - hoping a recent query might provide the new address. As someone who has been a volunteer coding web pages since ''97 and the original Roots Web - we OFTEN make the decision NOT to remove the link as we frequently get an up-date or a new volunteer - AS IT IS A REMINDER. Most likely a complaint will come from a newbie - who believes the someone has ALL their genealogy, doesn't want to use his own time in genealogy, and is a recent computer user. Successful genealogists all eventually learn that genealogy milestones come with patience and perseverance. That's why I like - "Links to external web sites are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement or approval of any of the products, services or opinions contained in any external web site." Most volunteers do check their links with regularity. It's just we can't keep up with the changes/drops of visitors and their ISPs with ESP. ;-) At 08:24 AM 7/29/2006, you wrote: >Will you please pass this message on to your state lists? > >Thanks > >Linda Haas Davenport >NC USGenWeb Project > >----- Original Message ----- >From: umpire@sbcglobal.net >To: lhaasdav@cox.net >Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 5:55 PM >Subject: Updates > > >I have gone to several county sites in several different states >and found that for the lookup volunteers the email addresses are >not working or good addresses. For those who have not heard of XENU or are having trouble finding the link, you can read about it and download the free version to use at: http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html Les West Virginia genealogy page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvgenweb/ Jackson County genealogy page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvjackso/JACK.HTM
Hello, This is for all WVGenWeb CCs. Have you checked the links on your web pages recently? After a recent listing of broken links on the pages of many candidates and the resulting discussions on USGW-Discuss I decided to download the link checking program XENU and give it a try. I ran it on the WVGenWeb state page and it in turn spidered down through all the county pages. The results show there are many dead links, re-directed links and mal-formed links. I would highly recommend that each of you try running one of the link checkers on your pages. It is hard to not have a few broken links as some pages seem to more quite often but when the percentage of broken links and re-directed links starts climbing, it makes it appear that the pages are not being properly cared for. I know that I have found more errors on my pages than I expected and have a great deal of work to do to correct this. I may be seeking some help from those of you who helped create some of the pages on the state page. To all USGenWeb Project Members: The Advisory Board recently passed a motion to set up a grievance committee and a set of policies and procedures for the committee. (http://ilgenweb.rootsweb.com/GPC/usgwgpc.html). The previous questions about conflicts between the bylaws and the procedures are answered here: (<http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOARD/2006-07/1153394832>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOARD/2006-07/1153394832 http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOARD/2006-07/1153395587) Although the grievance committee can operate without a bylaw amendment and the procedures are not in conflict with the bylaws a bylaws amendment is needed for the following reasons: To remove the AB from being required to "advise and mediate" grievances. To add the authority to establish a standing committee (a housekeeping item needed per Sturgis). To make the grievance committee a standing committee that cannot be disbanded by future ABs. To make the outcome of a grievance binding. Currently the way the bylaws read the AB, after reaching a decision on a grievance, can only make a recommendation which does not have to be implemented. To insure that a dismissed CC or SP member's website not be given away during the grievance process. Currently the AB does not have that authority. Since this amendment will directly effect the members of the Project the AB is asking for input from the membership. Please feel free to forward to any appropriate list. Linda Haas Davenport NC USGenWeb Project ************* Proposed Amendment: That the following articles of the USGenWeb Project are repealed and replaced as stated below: That Bylaws Article VI, (Duties/Qualifications of Advisory Board), Section 3 is repealed to remove the comment " advising and mediating, if necessary, any grievances or appeals," And, is replaced with the following which includes the authority to establish standing committees and to oversee them. Section 3. The responsibilities of the Advisory Board shall include: addressing any problem issues as they arise, aiding the state projects upon request, establishing standing committees, overseeing elections, overseeing standing committees and appointing a Webmaster to maintain the national website. That USGenWeb By-Laws, Section XIV, Sections 1 and 2, entitled "Grievance Procedures and Appeals Process" are repealed, and to enact in lieu thereof a new Section XIV entitled "Standing Grievance Committee". Section 1. There shall be established a Grievance Committee as a standing committee of the USGenWeb Project. Section 2. The standing Grievance Committee will operate under a set of Grievance Policies and Procedures that may change from time to time. Changes to the Grievance Policies and Procedures must be approved by the USGenWeb Advisory Board. The current Grievance Policies and Procedures shall be displayed on the National website. Section 3. The USGenWeb Advisory Board will appoint the members of the initial standing Grievance Committee, and subsequent members be chosen from qualified applicants per the terms of the Grievance Policies and Procedures. Section 4. The responsibility of the standing Grievance Committee shall be to administer fair, orderly, and speedy resolutions of disputes in accordance with the Grievance Policies and Procedures. Section 5. The outcome of a grievance, whether settled by mediation or by arbitration, is binding upon the membership of the USGenWeb Project. Section 6. It shall be the policy of the USGenWeb Project that all actions, whether under the national standing Grievance Committee or of a local grievance or process at the state or special project level shall be characterized by fairness, courtesy, and respect for the dignity and the rights of each individual involved. Section 7. Appeals may be made to the USGenWeb Advisory Board and its decision shall be final. Section 8. To that end, the following rights and responsibilities apply to all grievance processes within the USGenWeb Project, XXGenWeb State Projects, and Special Projects of the USGenWeb Project. 1) A member may choose to act as his or her own representative, or may select someone to act as his or her representative. The member retains the right to appoint, change or dismiss the representative at any step of the procedure." 2) In actions resulting from the dismissal of a member from his or her position within a State, Local, or Special Project, the dismissed member may not be replaced until the expiration of the time for the filing of a grievance, or if such grievance is filed, until it's resolution. Nothing shall prohibit the recruitment of a temporary coordinator to maintain any website. 3) No member shall be discriminated against for exercising their right to request action by the standing Grievance Committee, for participating in a grievance as a witness, or as a representative of a party to the grievance, and no disciplinary action shall be taken against a party for their involvement in the grievance process. -- No virus found in this incoming message. Hello It has been suggested that I check to see how many CCs would be available and interested in a group picnic either on Saturday August 19th or Saturday August 26th. Anyone that thinks that they might be able to make it either of those dates, please let me know which date(s) you would be available and where you would be travelling from. This would permit me to do some quick planning to try and find a more central meeting place for a picnic. Hopefully there will be sufficient interest for one. It has been ten years since our first group gathering in Charleston. Thought that you should all read this in order to be aware of what the NC and AB are doing. Les With the passage of the Grievance Procedure Committee's Grievance procedures the next step is to consider the GPC's proposed bylaw amendment. Proposed By-Law Amendment: We, the members of the USGenWeb Grievance Procedures Committee by the attachment of our names below, indicate our request that the USGenWeb Advisory Board propose an amendment to the USGenWeb By-Laws pursuant to Article XVI Section 5 upon the Advisory Board's approval of the Grievance Procedures created by this committee. The urgency of the matter is due to the existence of both USGenWeb By-Law and Standing procedures directly conflicting with the adoption of the Grievance Procedures. We further request following amendment to the USGenWeb By-Laws, as follows: That the standing procedures related to Mediation are repealed, and that the USGenWeb By-Laws, Section XIV, Sections 1 and 2, entitled "Grievance Procedures and Appeals Process" are repealed, and to enact in lieu thereof a new Section XIV entitled "Grievance Policy and procedures". Be it enacted by the membership of the USGenWeb Project, as follows: Section 1. That there shall be established a Grievance Committee as a standing subcommittee of the USGenWeb Project. Section 2. That the USGenWeb Advisory Board will appoint the members of the initial grievance Committee, and that subsequent members chosen from qualified applicants per the terms of the Grievance Policy and Procedures. Section 3. That the responsibility of the Grievance Committee shall be to administer fair, orderly, and speedy resolutions of disputes in accordance with the Grievance Policies and Procedures. Section 4. That the outcome of a grievance, whether settled by mediation or by arbitration, is binding upon the membership of the USGenWeb Project. Section 5. That it shall be the policy of the USGenWeb Project that all actions, whether under the national Grievance Committee or of a local grievance or process at the state or project level shall be characterized by fairness, courtesy, and respect for the dignity and the rights of each individual involved. To that end, the following rights and responsibilities apply to all grievance processes within the USGenWeb Project, XXGenWeb State Projects, and Special Projects of the USGenWeb Project. 1) A member may choose to act as his or her own representative at any step of a grievance. If representation is desired, the member may select a representative, provided the member who is selected does not have a direct interest in the outcome of the grievance. 2) In actions resulting from the dismissal of a member from his or her position within a State, Local, or Special Project, the dismissed member may not be replaced until the expiration of the time for the filing of a grievance, or if such grievance is filed, until it's resolution. Nothing shall prohibit the recruitment of a temporary coordinator to maintain any website. 3) No member shall be discriminated against for exercising their right to request action by the Grievance Committee, for participating in a grievance as a witness, or as a representative of a party to the grievance, and no disciplinary action shall be taken against a party for their involvement in the grievance process. Hello It is time for the annual Shockey reunion. We are heading to Winchester and Shockeyville VA this morning. Hopefully I-68 from Morgantown to Hancock and State Rt 522 from Hancock to Winchester are not affected by any of the high waters. I should be returning home July 3rd and my youngest daughter and her three children are due here that evening. As always I will be trying to check my email at least daily. Two years ago I had problems trying to reply to any email due to the variation in the email address due to being outside the normal citynet area. I may have to change it to LShockey@citynet-national.net or WVGenWeb@citynet-national.net so you might need to add this to your accept list for anti spam programs. Your voting info is due to be mailed out. If there are problems and you do not hear from me, hopefully Valerie will take care of any problems until I am back.
