Good job, Linda!! I'm sure you know that you have grounds for a suit. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000512----000-.html the laws are just vague enough that it wouldn't benefit you if their pockets are deep enough... But a 'Stop and Desist' order is generally enough to make a server think twice about hosting them. Sometimes a simple notification to the ISP that it has infringing content on its servers is enough to do the trick. .Ancestry might just be large enough to own its own server for all I know tho... You should register the copyright to your website immediately - <sigh> I suppose we all should... That's about $30.00 if you do all the work yourself. Don't know about everyone else - but I don't know which hurts more - the time involved - or the price - After I pay for the server and the domain names, etc. etc. every year, I realize I am not a webmaster - I'm a webslave.... Anyway - well-written, and you should be proud! fran On 8/27/07, Lesley L Shockey <LesShockey@wildblue.net> wrote: > > Ah that does make a difference. Linda thanks for sharing this photo. Question is Isaac Duvall the 4th man in top from the left or right? Edwin Maxwell last man second row from the left or right? We spent the second day, much like the first day. We had folks drop by and visit the booth who were true USGenWeb Project supporters and cheer leaders. It is very humbling at times to hear the accolades from the general public and the greater genealogical community. We heard many comments that the USGenWeb Project among researchers and educators is one of the premier genealogical repositories and most recommended on the internet today. A must for all researchers! All of us working the booth (Betsy Mills - SC of Arkansas, CC in TX; Ellen Pack - CC in Mississippi; Betty Thomas - SC of Massachusetts, CC in NY; Joy Fisher (and husband Frank) - SC of South Dakota, CC, and USGenWeb Project Archives and myself have throughly enjoyed representing the Project and the terrific work we all do. One of the most exciting stories today was, and forgive me that I don't remember the state or county, was a lady that told us a story of family lore of her great great grandfather, I believe, being a triplet .. never proved. She was able to prove the triplet lore by a transcription of a newspaper article provided by a USGenWeb Project site. I would be remiss if I didn't also say that with our 11 year history that some visitors to the booth challenged us to do more, to provide more, and to work harder. That is a good thing! We were able to let them know that the USGenWeb Project volunteers are always looking for transcriptions of any kind .. bibles, cemeteries, census, marriages etc etc. We let them know that each and every one of our volunteers would be willing and very happy to help place their contributions on-line. We even helped them realize and discover that the materials that they have within their research and possession will benefit the visitors of the USGenWeb Project just by their contribution. I really wish I could adequately describe the spirit at the conference. The challenge of the work that we all do on a daily basis truly comes to fruition with the comments we hear from our visitors and the greater genealogical community. Thank you all for doing such a hard job very well done! Tina
--Please forward to appropriate Project lists-- The USGenWeb Project is off to a terrific and exciting start to our presence at the FGS Conference in Fort Wayne, IN. We had many, many people visit the booth to just say thank you! They told us how much they appreciate the work the Project does, how much they have and are benefitting, and yes, even to ask how they can help! Once again we have a volunteer form for those interested in volunteering or contributing to fill out. At the end of the conference I will be distribute those names and email addresses to appropriate XXGenWeb and Special Project Coordinators. Many volunteers were in attendance, and we enjoyed meeting each and every one. As WIGenWeb Project State Coordinator, I had the pleasure of meeting three of Wisconsin's County Coordinators .. it was 'moo'varleous! The brochures and other promotional materials provided by many XXGenWeb Projects, Special Projects and the committee were very well received. A huge thank you goes out to all who participated in the preparing and sending them along for inclusion. Below is the latest draft of the complete CC Guidelines document for your comment. Mike ----------------------------------------- I. PREFACE. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide the Local/County Coordinators with consolidated information to help them design and maintain their websites. . Section II lists those items, with references, which are required of the Local/County Coordinator to be in compliance with Project policy. Section III lists those items strongly recommended as "best practices" which will enhance the experience of visitors to the websites. 2. USGenWeb Project Terms: (CC) = County Coordinator. (SC) = State Coordinator. (LC) = Local Coordinator (rarely used). XXGenWeb = Where XX represents a State Project, i.e., IAGenWeb = Iowa. County Website = Applies equally to parish and township websites. Project = The USGenWeb Project. 3. The Project's national website is at http://www.usgenweb.com/ and the specific section for volunteers is at http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/index.shtml . The Project's Election Committee website http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/ will explain the Project's election process and how to register to vote. You will receive the Project's monthly Newsletter and prior issues of the Newsletter are posted at http://www.usgenweb.com/newsletter/index.shtml . The Project's Bylaws: http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml . The Project's Standard Rules: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/standard-rules.shtml . The Project's Special Rules: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/special-rules.shtml . The Project's Mailing Lists: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/mail-lists.shtml 4. Your Website: As the owner of your website, you have the option of establishing your website on any server. Project websites are hosted by a variety of servers, most of them free of charge. Your SC is available to help. Check with your SC for any particular state requirements for county websites. If you are changing an existing website, check with your SC about any state guidelines for removing any information. Website design help can be found at http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/design.shtml . Additional information is available by subscribing to the email-list USGW-HELPPAGES-D-request@rootsweb.com with the word "subscribe" (without quotes) in the subject line and the text body. II. REQUIRED. 1. USGenWeb Project Logo. (USGenWeb Bylaw Article IX, Section 1 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). All websites shall include a prominent display of a USGenWeb Project logo on the home page. See III STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, Paragraph 1, for suggested use. The logos are found at http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/logos.shtml. Some states may also require the display of a state logo. 2. Solicitation Of Funds. (USGenWeb Bylaw Article IX, Section 2 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). Solicitation of funds for personal gain is inappropriate. See the complete Bylaw reference for further information . 3. Copyrights. (USGenWeb Bylaw Article X, Section 4 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). All USGenWeb members are responsible for adhering to the Project's Copyright Policy. See the complete Bylaw reference for further information . Check with your SC for any particular state requirements for county websites. Further, although the Project Policy addresses specifically genealogy information it pertains also to all facets of the website, i.e., graphics, html coding, backgrounds, audios, videos, etc. 4. State Mailing List/Website Link (USGenWeb Bylaw Article XI, Sections 2/3 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). All County Coordinators shall be subscribed to the XXGenWeb mailing list and each website shall have a direct link to the state project . 5. Area For Researcher's Queries (USGenWeb Bylaw Article XI, Section 3 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). County websites must include a means for a researcher to post a query. If the state does not have requirements, there are several options available. You may administrate a query page or message board system or provide a link to an existing message board related to your county. Queries are designed to be posted so others are able to make contact. Coordinators may generate their own query systems on their websites or use established systems such as rootsweb.com, genforum.com, ancestry.com, etc. Coordinators are not required to research the queries. 6. Removing Links of Websites Not Meeting Standards. State Coordinators have the responsibility to review county compliance with standards and to remove links for those failing to meet standards. (USGenWeb Bylaw Article XII, Sections 6 and 7 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). The Project Advisory Board has the responsibility to remove links from the Project national website to websites failing to meet standards. (USGenWeb Bylaw Article VI, Section 5 - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ). III STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. 1. USGenWeb Logo. II REQUIRED, Paragraph 1 requires a Project logo be displayed on the website. The Project logos are located at http://usgenweb.org/volunteers/logos.shtml . The logo should be only in the size provided and visible immediately when the opening (index, default, et.al) page of the website loads into the browser. Placement at or near the top of the page is important because different browsers render the pages differently, and all initially display a page with the top of the page in full view. 2. Contact Information. Local Coordinators should provide valid contact information (such as email, or contact form, or telephone, etc.) on the opening (index, default, et.al) page of the website. Clear and prominent information should be provided. The importance of acknowledging all emails, data submissions, and otherwise responding to visitors cannot be stressed enough. 3. Website Search Engine. The more information a website contains the greater consideration should be given to installing a search engine. A search engine is a powerful tool for the visiting researcher providing it includes all the files and subsets of the website. There are several free search engines available and all of them have perfected easy ways of acquiring, installing, using, and enhancing. Among several are: http://www.freefind.com/ and http://www.picosearch.com/ . Check with your SC as this is a requirement in some states. 4. Strongly Recommended Links. i. The USGenWeb Project - http://www.usgenweb.org. ii. The USGenWeb Project Archives Table of Contents page (sorted by state) - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb. From this main page, follow the links to your state and county. iii. The archives search option - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/newsearch.htm. iv. The WorldGenWeb Project - http://www.worldgenweb.org/ . 5. Disclaimer. Many websites link to websites that are not part of USGenWeb. Therefore we strongly recommend that you use the following, or similar, disclaimer on website home pages: "Links to websites that are not part of the USGenWeb Project are provided for your convenience and do not imply any endorsement of the websites or their contents by the USGenWeb Project or its members. Neither the USGenWeb Project nor its members are responsible for the contents of any "third party" website which you may access from a link on this website." 6. County Resource Page and Lookups: Websites should provide some basic research help. It is recommended the website provides contact information for the the county court clerk, library, and genealogical and/or historical societies. Also, provide a bibliography page showing the reference books available for their county. Lookups should be offered if you or your volunteers have received permission to do so from the book's author or publisher or if the reference books you have available meet the copyright policies of The USGenWeb Project. 7. USGenWeb Help Pages Mailing List. The purpose of this list is to provide a communication across state and project lines for members seeking and giving technical assistance in building and improving websites, as well as assistance in attracting and displaying submissions, meeting researcher needs, utilizing special projects, and so forth, in pursuance of the Project goals. To maintain a historical knowledge base, the discussions are archived. To post or respond to questions, subscribe by sending an email to USGW-HELPPAGES-D-request@rootsweb.com with the word "subscribe" (without quotes) in the subject line and the text body. 8. URL/Link Checker. Periodically the webmaster should check that all links on the website are valid. There are several free URL/Link Checkers available and most are very easy to understand and use. Among them are Xenu's Link Sleuth - http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html ; W3C Link Checker - http://validator.w3.org/checklink ; DeadLinks.com - http://www.dead-links.com/ - and more. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to USGENWEB-ALL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- No virus found in this incoming message. This is the latest rewrite of the Proposed CC Guidelines the AB has been working on. If you have not been following this on ABCHAT-L - please forward any comments you may have to this list. I have gone through all of the comments I saw on the SW list, this SEMA list and that were sent to me personally and believe everything has been addressed with the exception of some items that would require an amendment to the Project's Bylaws to implement or change. An amendment to the Bylaws is not the purpose or within the scope of this task. Among several are: http://www.freefind.com/ and http://www.picosearch.com/ . 4. Strongly Recommended Links. i. The USGenWeb Project - http://www.usgenweb.org. ii. The USGenWeb Project Archives Table of Contents page (sorted by state) - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb. From this main page, follow the links to your state and county. iii. The archives search option - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/newsearch.htm. iv. The WorldGenWeb site - http://www.worldgenweb.org/ . 5. Disclaimer. Many websites link to sites that are not part of USGenWeb. Therefore we strongly recommend that you use the following, or similar, disclaimer on website home pages: "Links to sites that are not part of the USGenWeb Project are provided for your convenience and do not imply any endorsement of the sites or their contents by the USGenWeb Project or its members. Neither the USGenWeb Project nor its members are responsible for the contents of any "third party" site which you may access from a link on this website." 6. Here's an abstracted obit that includes some early WV lawmakers. But can not identify him or the others mentioned in the article. Edgington was a resident of Hancock County, WV his entire life. The Honorable Jesse Edgington, Esq. 1778-1866 Abstracted from the Wed. 8th Aug 1866 Steubenville Weekly Herald, microfilm from Schiappa Library, Steubenville, OH. Thursday, August 2 (1866) Death of Hon. Jesse Edgington We announce to-day, the death of Hon. Jesse Edgington, who departed this life, at his late residence, Holiday's Cove, W. Virginia, last night, Wednesday, August 1st, 1866, in the 87th year of his age, "full of honors and ripe in years." Mr. Edgington was one of the first men of his time. He was in the prime of life a man of no ordinary ability, and leaves a worthy name. His father was the first settler who erected a cabin on the eastern border of the state of Ohio, and he, Jesse Edgington, Esq., was the oldest lawyer at his death, and we believe among the first who practised at the Steubenville bar. He was for many years prosecuting attorney of Brooke county, Va., was representative four years in the Senate of that State, and was for many years a member of the Governor's Select Council. He was the associate of Henry Clay, of Philip Doddridge, Charles Hammond, Judges McLean, Wright, Goodnow, the Colliers, & c. He was a noble old man, a gentleman in the strictest sense of the word, and dies with an untarnished reputation, honored and respected by all who knew him. His funeral will take place from his late residence, Holiday's Cove, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The body is to be deposited in the Steubenville Cemetery. The friends and the public are respectfully invited to attend. At 04:15 PM 8/14/2007, you wrote: >Hi, Everyone: > >I bought this composite picture of the West Virginia Senate in 1866. County Site = Applies equally to parish and township sites. Check with your SC for any particular state requirements for county sites. If you are changing an existing site, check with your SC about any state guidelines for removing any information. The logos are found at http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/logos.shtml. All websites shall include a prominent display of The USGenWeb Project logo on the home page. 6. Removing Links of Sites Not Meeting Standards. This guideline strongly recommends only the logos of Project located at http://usgenweb.org/volunteers/logos.shtml are acceptable and only in the size provided. The logo should be visible immediately when the opening (index, default, et.al) page of the site loads into the browser. Placement at or near the top of the page is important because different browsers render the pages differently, and all initially display a page with the top of the page in full view. 2. Contact Information. Local Coordinators should provide valid contact information (such as email, or contact form, or telephone, etc.) on the opening (index, default, et.al) page of the site. Clear and prominent information should be provided. The importance of acknowledging all emails, data submissions, and otherwise responding to visitors cannot be stressed enough. 3. Web Site Search Engine. The more information a web site contains the greater consideration should be given to installing a search engine. 4. Strongly Recommended Links. i. The USGenWeb Project - http://www.usgenweb.org. ii. Hi Lesley, Thanks but I have contacted both Everett Carr and B. Jo Branch. They are working on it now. This happens to me all the time. :-) People don't believe my name is Just Plain Bill or Billy. It was a lot of fun when I worked in Philadelphia Pa and signed into a motel as Billy Cunningham...... Hello Bill, If someone changed your name from Bill to William, it was not on our end. You were on the list where I submitted updates to "Everette Carr" <everette.carr@gmail.com> on 08/02/07 at 8:31 PM. I sent in three changes for the third quarter update, added one to the list and removed one from the list. The line for you showed: change Bill Cunningham to <billcham44@gmail.com> I can write to Everette Carr or to B. Jo Branch if you prefer me doing it for you.
