Yes there is still only 55 counties. There was never any such song taught in history class or any other class when I attended school either. In West Virginia History we were required to learn the names of all 55 counties and seem like the names of all the county seats also. It has been way too long since I was in school also. I checked with my step-daughter and her daughter. Neither of them ever heard such a song in their WV History classes either. I was asked today if I knew the words to the State History song that names the counties; it used to be taught in state history classes. I'll be blowed if it was taught in MY state history classes. We'll ignore the question of whether that makes it older or younger than dirt, please. Thing is, any of you know this song? The person who asked me heard it only once and can't remember another thing about it except it contains the name of all 55 counties. In conjunction with the masthead negotiations/discussions, the Board and I feel that a contingency discussion is also prudent to have. I offer the below as discussion points only. We welcome all Project members to express their concerns, opinions and to ask questions. Please forward to XXGenWeb Project lists. Again, below is intended as discussion points *only*. Main discussion will take place on the -Discuss list. Subscription information is available at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/USGenWeb/USGENWEB-DISCUSS.html Please have courtesy and respect for your peers and the hosts of our mailing lists as we have this discussion. If you wish to contact Advisory Board members privately their names and email addresses are available at: http://www.usgenweb.com/about/advisoryboard.shtml Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project ----------------- Our USGenWeb Project bylaws state: ARTICLE II. PURPOSE "Section 1. The USGenWeb Project is an organized group of volunteers working to create an online center for genealogical research by linking every county in the United States. The purpose of this organization shall be to gather genealogical and historical information for free online access by researchers". Key phrase being: "free online access by researchers". The bylaws make no reference to which server any member or project of the USGenWeb Project must use. Long set precedence allows for the use of "server of one's choice." That choice extends to county, parish, town, special project, etc., and the USGenWeb National pages. As a Project, we are at a crossroads. Rootsweb and its parent company have been a very gracious and accommodating host for many years. And as a Project we would be remiss not to appreciate that. However, some corporate changes and decisions of late have placed the USGenWeb Project in a tenuous position. We need to evaluate their business decisions vs. our mission of providing " ... free online access by researchers." This is a huge decision and discussion. It is a decision as to whether or not to stay with our current host. It is a discussion I feel that must be held in conjunction with the masthead discussion. It is a discussion and decision that we must have as the USGenWeb Project community. The key question for the USGenWeb Project to discuss is: How important is it that we are seen in the genealogy community as the "USGenWeb Project .. Land of Free Genealogy"? Having answered that question, we need to evaluate many things. We have three domains: .org, .net and .com We need to consider hosting, specialized tools [php, db, etc], maintenance, administration, financing and security, to name a few. We need to make choices to promote the growth and future of the USGenWeb Project. Please understand these concerns are for the *national pages only*, but I feel a very important discussion to have with the entire USGenWeb Project membership. Bottom line is what is best for the USGenWeb Project? Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project
Please feel free to forward to Project lists. --- I want everyone to know, that the Board is very receptive to suggestions, comments, ideas and concerns project members have. Linda: I was able to find your "C" Obituary page at www.ancestry.com I have not yet found any of my personal pages nor my county page there but that just could be that I haven't hit on the correct "search". Amber Hello, Anna: While you say the "Internet Biographical Collection" is not accessible, you have not stated that you have deleted the cached files, nor that you won't find another way to use them. My initial outrage was related to the many thousands of ORIGINAL images, bios, html-authored pages, etc. IN MY OWN DOMAIN. You say, "We cached individual Web pages in an effort to preserve history - if a Web page featuring important family history information were taken down in the future, a cached version would still be available." As if you hve the right to determine the fate of files that DO NOT belong to you. However, I see that they are not being used, as you have said, "for the time being." BUT my files from my GenWeb sites ARE on Ancestry.com - AT THIS MOMENT. This raises this question in my mind: Are you going to take the cached files, harvested for the "Internet Genealogical Collection," and simply incorporate them into other collections - under different names? Just so you get the picture of what I am saying about the GenWeb files being on your Ancestry.com site, try this: Go to Ancestry.com Type in Nettie Atkinson On the Historical Records result, click "United States Obituary Collection" Look on the list until you see William Grant Cunningham - click that When the page comes up, click "View full obituary." That is my "C" obituary file for my Marshall County site. It is no doubt the same for all. I have not looked at the extent to which my GenWeb files are there but they should have NONE. I have not donated anything to Ancestry.com Another thing is that the "United States Obituary Collection" is a MESS. In the example I gave you, you can see that she died 60+ years ago and the obit was in the Wheeling paper. .Yet this is what the Ancestry, com thing says: Newspaper Title: Wilson County News, The Newspaper Location: Floresville, TX, Us Obituary Publication Date: 13 Apr 2004 Linda Cunningham Fluharty _www.lindapages.com_ (http://www.lindapages.com) ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WVGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Please feel free to forward to appropriate Project lists. Tina ----- Original Message ----- From: Tina S. Vickery To: board@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2007 8:11 AM Subject: Statement on discussion/negotiations - Masthead for USGenWeb Rootweb hosted sites. As some of you may know, I attended the FGS conference in Fort Wayne, IN in mid-August where the USGenWeb Project hosted a booth. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting Sean Lloyd [again], Associate Community Development Manager for rootsweb.com and Donna Popelish, RootsWeb Help desk Manager. It was a pleasure to finally meet Donna, who is long overdue a huge THANK YOU from the USGenWeb Project for her care and responsiveness to the Project. She is one of our unsung heroes for her service! After the election, but prior to September 1, I received an email from Sean, requesting a teleconference with David Graham, RootsWeb Product Manager; Anna Fechter, Community Operations Manager The Generations Network; and Sean. While I agreed to the teleconfernce, I reiterated to them, that I was not National Coordinator yet. But I did agree to listen. And listen I did. Rootsweb and The Generation Network are very eager to work with us, (the Board and the Project membership), to facilitate a design for our masthead that distinctly displays our mission and goals while at the same time addresses their business concerns and decisions. I have no reason to believe that this negotiation will not be done in good faith, as both parties are eager to enter into a mutually acceptable agreement. The conclusion of our conversation was that they would prepare and forward to me a proposal for presentation to the Advisory Board and the Project. I will keep you all abreast of the discussions as they progress. Tina Vickery, National Coordinator USGenWeb Project

Scott Burow NC - USGenWeb ----- Original Message ----- From: Anna Fechter To: sburow@swbell.net Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:24 PM Subject: Update on Ancestry's Internet Biographical Collection Scott, I wanted to make sure that you were kept up to date with the latest developments. We have decided to remove the collection from our site. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. "Earlier this week we launched the Internet Biographical Collection on Ancestry.com. Our goal was to offer members a search engine that focused primarily on genealogy resources. We intended this collection to help surface family history information that many people would not be able to find easily because it is often scattered among numerous websites across the Internet. We cached individual Web pages in an effort to preserve history - if a Web page featuring important family history information were taken down in the future, a cached version would still be available. Many people have expressed concerns about the collection and the search engine we created on Ancestry.com. We recognize the significant time and resources members of the genealogical community invest to make their family history research available online. Over the past few days we have reevaluated this collection's goals, caching and crawling ability, and user experience. We have decided to remove this collection and search engine from Ancestry.com for the time being. We are still dedicated to providing family historians the online tools and aggregated records that make it easier to trace their family tree and will work to develop a solution that meets those needs in a way that will be most beneficial to our customers and the community."
