Hi Linda, Well here is the bad news. Things got so bad during the annual election that Rootsweb was going to close the list entirely. Scott was able to negotiate to keep it open only if they eliminated the archives. I do have a few hundred of the messages saved on my hard drive but with my lousy dialup connection (while waiting for satellite parts) it would be a major job to send them all to you. I am not in favor of incorporation or a 501. Where will the money come from and who will take care of all that will be involved. Maybe I am missing something. Discuss no longer has an Archive. It was removed by Roots Web several months ago because of the content. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LCFlu@aol.com> To: <wvgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 12:16 PM Subject: Re: [WVGEN] need your input on Project incorporation > Hi, Everyone: > > For more than 5 hours, I have been trying to access the archived messages > for the USGENWEB-DISCUSS Mailing List. When their expenses became too great (and they had borrowed many thousands of dollars to meet expenses) and donations were falling far short of that needed to meet the monthly operating expenses, they sold their mom and pop business to Ancestry.com who has since been purchased by IGN. Dr B and Karen provided free space for any USGenWeb Project pages that wanted them. They tried to guarantee that this continue under the agreement that was signed by Ancestry.com at the time of the sale. For IGN the "hosted by Rootsweb" banner does not seem to be enough. The AB is working on trying to reach an acceptable agreement in regard to the banners on pages and if an absolute requirement, then the wording of the banner. We sure do not want it to indicate that we are owned by IGN or Rootsweb, only hosted by them. Our regional AB reps are on this list and maybe they can explain this better than I have. Les
Les, As a senior citizen, I've been a member in the past of small organizations (civil and genealogical) who "incorporated" when they first formed. It was for legal protection which if I remembered correctly - was to legally keep their name and a "must do" suggested by attorneys. They also were non-profit organizations. But I've a question. I remember Brian Leverige (sp?) selling this volunteer organization (late 1990s)- which must have been incorporated in order to do this. Now who remembers who purchased this project? And has it transferred more than once? Many are saying that incorporating the Project should have no effect on any county site, just offer each one protection from anyone just taking over the Project. I really am not sure. There are a group of people that have pushed for the Project to become a non profit 501 (c) (3) since the beginning. Opinions differ on this. To me money corrupts. To protect the Project would then require qualified persons to handle things and that costs. Others can only see those huge donations that will buy us servers (who will take care of them) and many major databases to transcribe and put on line. Others keep saying how great it will be to deduct everything on their taxes. I do not know all the answers. Hopefully some of our group knows more in this regard or have children who are knowledgeable that can provide us answers. I want what our WVGenWeb volunteers feel is best for us. Les, I don't think it's necessary for WVGenWeb to incorporate as a 501(c)(3). There are other options that we should pursue. I would like to see our URL changed so it shows our own domain name instead of including Rootsweb in the URL. There is a lot of talk on the DISCUSS list about the proposed Branding by TGN (The Generation Network, the company that currently owns Ancestry, MyFamily, and RootsWeb) that would add a header row and possibly footer row on all the web-pages that are hosted on Rootsweb with "Hosted by Rootsweb" on the left and "An Ancestry.com Community" on the right. I feel we've already been branded Rootsweb by having their name in our URL all these years. Many of the Researchers think we "are" Rootsweb. There are 10 states who have obtained their own domain names and moved their state pages off Rootsweb (Arizona, California, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vermont). They no longer have Rootsweb in their URL. There are 3 states who have obtained their own domain names and are still located on the Rootsweb servers, but their URL shows as their own domain name. (Delaware, Kentucky, and Maryland). I think at the very least we should find out how the three states managed to have their URL changed and still be on Rootsweb, so that we can consider doing that. Moving the state pages to a different server than Rootsweb should be considered if it's decided that branding will occur by TGN to add rows at the top and possibly bottom of our web-pages that are hosted on Rootsweb. VAGenWeb has a "shadow" site hosted on rootsweb, as a virtual domain website ... We've registered the site with networksolutions.com under our domain names vagenweb.org and vagenweb.net and it's accessible by either name. To what purpose would this incorporation serve? This sounds rather simple and is incorrect grammar but, "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" I am opposed to any action which would make USGenWeb answerable in court for suits against its members/officers I believe incorporation would be one of those, so I oppose it Freddie S. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lesley L Shockey" <LesShockey@wildblue.net> To: <wvgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 24, 2007 7:13 PM Subject: [WVGEN] need your input on Project incorporation Hello WVGenWeb CCs, I regret having to bring this subject up again but I realize that things change over time and individual opinions also change. Please share with appropriate USGenWeb Project lists. The Financial Management motion Motion [07-12] that passed in June will be added to the Advisory Board agenda for October. The Advisory Board will revisit the topic, solicit comments from members and reissue the call for volunteers at the appropriate time. Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral and Grant used to be part of that Eastern Panhandle but someone in PR/Advertising moved 'em to Potomac Highlands. Odd that they got Morgan in which is half Hampshire. -- There should be no attachments on this message, unless I specifically mentioned them above.
