He became a private with the 8th Virginian Cavalry and was placed in Company I. Israel was placed on a detailed service in South Carolina. He was captured in Raleigh County on April 4th of 1864. Israel was sent to Camp Chase as a prisoner of war in Ohio He died at Camp Chase on October 12th of 1864. Israel lies buried in a Confederate Cemetery in grave 306.
