Smith enlisted in the Confederate military on May 27th of 1861 at Falls Kanawah in Fayette County, Virginia. He became a private with the 8th Virginian Cavalry and was placed in Company I. Henry was on detail to organize a company in Logan County, Virginia, in March of 1863. He was captured in Raleigh County on April 22nd of 1864. Henry was sent to Camp Chase as prisoner of war April 23rd of 1864 at the age of 27. He was transferred to City Point and listed in the Wayside Hospitl in Richmond. Henry died at this hospital of bronchitis on March 19th of 1865.
