Cathy, I went through and tried to identify all the Johnsons in the 1840 Fayette Co., VA census to make sure which was the one who married Nancy Sims. Except for two of the Johnsons, I have been able to figure them out. The census is not alphabetical, which indicates it's likely an enumeration in geographical order, so it's significant which page the family appears on since that indicates geographical proximity: P. 2. Hiram Johnson. 0-0-1-0-1, 1-0-0-0-1. Unidentified. James Johnson, son of John B. and Elizabeth (Sims) Johnson named a son Hiram, but he was not born until 1832. This Hiram was born 1810-20. P. 2. William Johnson, Sr., 2-1-0-1-1-0-1, 1-0-0-1-1-1. This is the son of William & Amy Johnson, married Nancy Ann Sims. In the 30-40 age category, Nancy would seem to have been quite young to have married William in Oct. 1814. P. 3. James Johnson. 2-1-0-0-0-1, 2-2-0-0-0-1. This is the son of John B. & Elizabeth Sims Johnson, married Mary Murphy. P. 3. William Johnson, Jr. 2-0-0-0-2, 1-0-0-0-1. This is the son of John B. and Elizabeth Sims Johnson, married Virginia Settle. P. 3. John Johnson. 1-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-1, 0-0-0-0-1-0-0-1. This is John Brown Johnson, son of William and Amy Johnson, married Elizabeth Sims. The younger male and what I assume is a wife and child is likely Harrison Johnson. P. 3. John Johnson, Jr. 0-0-0-0-0-1, 3-2-0-0-0-1. This is the son of John B. and Elizabeth Sims Johnson, married Mary Ann Settle. He and Mary Ann had 10 girls. P. 3. Adam Johnson. 0-1-0-0-0-1, 1-0-0-0-1. This is the son of Benjamin Johnson, and married Malinda Woodrum. Benjamin Johnson was a Loup Creek settler, and Darlington's book provides more about this family. P. 4. Nelson Johnson. 1-0-0-0-1, 0-0-0-1. Unidentified. William and Amy (Nelson) Johnson had a son named Nelson, b. ca 1782, but this Nelson was born 1810-1820. May be of William and Amy's line. P. 12. Israel Johnson, 0-1-0-0-0-0-1, 1-0-0-2-0-1. He was the son of Zachariah Johnson and married Nancy Kelly. P. 19. William Johnson. 0-1-0-0-2-0-1, 0-0-1-1-0-0-1. This is William W. S. Johnson who married Sarah McCoy and died in Greenbrier Co. in 1849. They lived along the New River near present-day Sandstone, Summers Co., WV. There was a portion of Fayette Co. bounded to the south roughly by Laurel Creek in Summers Co. to the present Fayette Co. line that later was given to Summers Co. after its creation. The families in this area sometimes appear in Greenbrier records and sometimes in Fayette Co. records. This Johnson family was originally from Botetourt Co. I also descend from this couple. Can anyone identify Hiram and Nelson?
