Thank you Carol in VA for the circa date that James Kincaid arrived in the area. I am also interested in the Kincaid family as my James Ingram who came to the area the same time as James Kincaid was married to Margaret "Peggy" Kincaid, d/o John Kincaid and Elizabeth Gillespie. It helps to know where I can find the information even though I can't access it from here. Where can I purchase the 'Fayette Co. Cemeteries V1'? Are any of the local book stores carring it or must it be purchased by mail? I'll be in that area next week and would like to buy a copy.
Cathy, I talked with Geraldine last night, too late for me to compose a note to you. She told me that she has worked on the Ingram line, and will bring it to me to email to you. However, it may be a few days. Her husband had surgery yesterday. James Scarbrough, was commisioned a Justice of the Peace just before the beginning of the Civil war and apparently continued to serve during that conflict. The sons and daughters of James and Jane Scarbrough were; Washington; Emmeline; Malinda, who married to William Honaker; and Miram, the wife of Ash Stover. ----- Original Message ----- From: PJAFLA@aol.com Sent: Friday, July 06, 2001 11:10 AM To: WVFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WVFAYETT] James Kincaid settled on Loup Creek In a message dated 7/6/01 10:54:24 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Sept7_1943@hotmail.com writes: > James Scarbrough, the second son of Robert, married Sarah Jane Ball and > built his cabin on the east side of Paint Creek directly opposite the mouth > Can you tell me who James Scarbroughs children were? Hugh, I started something with my original mail asking about James Kincaid and when he settled on the Loup. Since I mentioned Darlington's book it got others off on other subjects. E-mails have been flying since then and listers have forgotten to change the subject line to reflect the content of their mail. I am also not very experienced with these lists. I am on several, none of them as busy as Fayette County's, some go for weeks without a single message. One of them had the following message: A gentle reminder: please type in a descriptive subject line for every message you post to this list. And if it's about a specific individual, please use this format: for example, "Johann RUPP 1824-1878 GER>NY>IA". Now getting back to my original subject and your subject: Do you know when James Kincaid settled on Loup/Loop Creek? Could it have been sometime around 1811? Tell them I would love to help in anyway I can , if they will let me know. We have been trying to get the state road to do the roads to the cemeteries around here. I have a letter everyone has been sending to Charleston to get the roads maintained to all of the cemeteries, it can be done on, the poor man road law, we got the one at the Kincaid cemetery taken care of and the bad rains have rutted it out again, so we start again. the Scarbrough settlement on Paint Creek was between Mossy and Milburn Creek. It was the first permanent settlement in that region and consisted of Robert Scarbrough, his sons Isaac, James, and John Wesley, and a son-in-law, Isaac Williams. the cabin of Robert (or Robin as he was familiarly known) and his wife Mary was on the south side of Paint Creek just below the mouth of Bishops Fork, where Emory Wriston now resides. Isaac, the oldest son of Robert, located a short distance northward on Milburn Creek. He selected a spot for his cabin at an apple tree where the ginsenger, Milburn, had camped with his family years before. The site of this cabin was a considerble distance above the mouth of the creek, on the western side thereof above Tansy Hollow, in the present coal town of Kingston. Isaac and his wife Rebecca were the first permanent settlers there, and their sons, Alex and Sanford, made their homes in this same valley later. James Scarbrough, the second son of Robert, married Sarah Jane Ball and built his cabin on the east side of Paint Creek directly opposite the mouth of Bishop Fork and the old Mossy Camp mentioned in Taylor's survey of 1786, supposed to be the camp site of Bishop, the ginsenger. A part of this cabin remained standing untill recently, when it was destroyed by fire about 1956. There is more but wanted to see if you think this is the Scarbrough family you are looking for. Jeannette, Do you know if anyone is doing the cemeteries on the route from Oak Hill down the Mountain to Deepwater? If so could you give me a name and phone number to get in touch with them? Sarah ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeannette S Fox Sent: Friday, July 06, 2001 9:56 AM To: WVFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WVFAYETT] Re: Fayette County Cemetery Records Vol 1 Leigh There are numerous cemeteries in and around Oak Hill. Just to name a few Highlawn Memorial Park, East Main Street, Oak Hill Odd Fellows Cemetery, Foot of Woods Avenue, Oak Hill Duncan Cemetery, Central Avenue, Oak Hill Blake Cemetery, On the Jones Mansion Property, Main Street, Oak Hill The Methodist Church Cemetery, behind the Church, Main St. Oak Hill (no longer burying) Then there is the Sanger (formerly Meadow Fork) area with several small older cemeteries Gethseme (The Old Thurmond Family Cemetery is included) Cemetery, off Pea Ridge Road, near Oak Hill Several cemeteries in the Salem-Gatewood areas between Oak Hill and Fayetteville. These are areas now being read for Volume II, Fayette-Raleigh Genealogical Society book. It will not however include Highlawn, as this would be a very large book by itself. Oh, I forgot to mention the Hill Top Cemetery, at Hill Top. If you are looking at a map, Oak Hill is located in Fayette County, approximately 15 miles from Beckley, and approximately 60 miles from Charleston. In the second book of Neil Darlington, CABINS OF THE LOOP and ENVIRONS OF THE SOUTHERN HALF OF FAYETTE COUNTY VIRGINIA (NOW WEST VIRGINIA), there is a section on the SCARBROUGH SETTLEMENT, seven pages including a picture of James Scarbrough's log cabin, ca 1830's. Bev
