I know there were some of his kin at or near Kessler's Cross roads, but have no contact with them. The old Patteson home at Carnefix Battlefield is the proper family, but want to know of descendents, please. Can I today contact any of this family? Any references appreciated, as I live in FL and am now elderly and no longer can travel to the "hills of home". Thank you, fellow West Virginians. Alice

    3. The history book I have is a 1972 reprint of the original 1926 edition by Peters and Carden. The 1972 reprint was done by McClain Printing Company of Parsons, WV (www.mcclainprinting.com) for Charles H. Keenan and Juanita P. Thomas, whom I suppose owns the copyright, or in the very least, the publishing rights. I purchased this copy in the gift shop across the hall from the Archives of the WV Cultural Center in Charleston back in 1994. Perhaps McClain's has copies in stock... so far, they haven't responded to my email. It has the photo of Vina Kincaid that someone mentioned earlier as well as a multitude of other photos. This second print though has that added extra... all the marriages on record at the Fayette Courthouse from 1830 to 1866, with the exception of the "war years." Pauline Haga found the marriages, births and deaths for those years over in Virginia, I believe, and the book she published is also available. I'd have to look up her address for those who are interested... I own a copy of Pauline's book, too. 3. Lana There are two Fayette County History Books. The one that Jeannette Fox and Sarah Kincaid mentioned is the one sponsored by the Fayette Co. Chamber of Commerce and published in 1993. John Cashion referred to the one that was published in 1926. I was told that it is possibly out of print. 3. Hi, Bev: Where did you get the Peters and Carden reprint (and when)? In other words, can I get one too? <G> Best wishes, June P.S. Thanks for the info on the flood. I talked to my maternal aunt Jo, who lives just up the road from Merle's house, Monday afternoon. I'm still reeling in shock. In addition to Merle's house, on that same little piece of bottom land was the trailer of one of my cousins and the house of his parents (his mother is one of Merle's daughters). My cousin lost his trailer home and my aunts house is severly undermined. My uncle Jimmy's house, built slightly further down and on higher ground, was above the flood waters. But, Marco and I were talking about it and we're surprised the houses built there hadn't already had major problems. If you look at it, you would realize it is Loup Creek's flood plain (after leaving West Virginia, I lived in St. Louis for 15 years and learned a lot about flood plains: I'd say Merle's house was built on about a 50-100 year flood plain. When we lived in St. Louis, we absolutely refused to buy a house that was even so much as on a 500 year flood plain! And you know what happened in 1993!) I remember one flood when I was a girl in the 1960's: the little stream which flowed by my grandmother Florence's house became too much for the culvert going under 61 and flowed across it. Loup Creek came up into the bottom land below my grandmother Florence's house and in front of the Diner 61 (which is just up the road from Merle's) and also into Merle's yard. It washed away her outhouse (of course, we kids thought that was hilarious). Someone mentioned a similar flood back in the 1930's and I bet Merle's house was built after that flood. I know the other residences on that same plain were. And I know this sounds quite selfish, but I'm so thankful that I got those old photos and never gave them back now. 3. I may be wrong here, but isn't the book John Cashion has and is referring to the 1920's Peters and Carden "History of Fayette Co."? The one for sale at the Chamber of Commerce is the new 1993 version, and is a completely different book. I have the 1993 book, but I don't think it has the photo of Vina Kincaid in it (although it does have many photos and family histories, and is a good book to have if you're researching Fayette Co.) John, correct me if I'm wrong here, please. If the Chamber of Commerce has the 1920's book (or reprint of it) for sale, stand back because I will knock you down trying to be first in line. <BG> Best wishes, June
