Hello List, I am seeking information on the Harrah line of Fayette County. In particular the family of Matthew K. Harrah's line. Matthew K. Harrah born abt. 1826 Greenbrier Co. his son Thomas A. Harrow born abt. 1851 married Fanny Coleman They had William Egbert Harrah born 1878 Fayette County. Fanny Coleman died and her sister Sarah Coleman who was married to William Clement Potter raised Egbert. I am not sure when Thomas died or where he is buried. There is a grave on my cousins farm which belongs to a Harrah . We are trying to find the name of this Harrah in order to place a marker on the grave. Does anyone have any info on this family line? It would be a shame to just place Harrah on the stone. Perhaps someone is searching for this lost grave and could possibly help us. Thanks for your time and help. Becky

Heather, I suspect they are the same person. In that same book, Vera listed my great-great grandfather William Henry Treadway with a brother Jesse and a brother 'Iafra"...apparently either she or whoever provided her the information had seen an entry for Jesse written with the first elongated "S" typical of the 19th century (which looks like a cursive "f") and interpreted it this way. Without documentation, it's difficult to know how accurate some of these family listings are. Unfortunately, that means redoing the research to document it. Is there a place in Fayette Co. called Jericho? My great-greatgrandfather was supposed to have died there. Thanks Lana S.
Hello Sue, Where did you get your dates for William Miles Fox 1807-1877? Your .ancestor S B Fox (Samuel Bolen, son of William M) reported his death in May 1876 in Fayette Co.,WV and listed his age as 73 and parents as John & Lucy. The 1830-1850 census of William M match this age. The 1860 & 1870 do not. The 1860 census of Fayette in one area has a lot of wrong ages listed. Some people even lost a few years from t he 1850 census. I guess this was from the people giving the information for a household or from the judgment of the census takers. The land on which the cemetery is located actually probably belonged to John Fox Sr before he willed it to William Miles Fox. In John's will he leaves the 108 acres to William M and it is listed in the will as along the Chestnutburg Road. William M's heirs/children sell this land in May 1877. This is the same 108 acres. There were only two rough hand carved stones for Foxes above ground and one below ground there in the cemetery. W M Fox (William Miles) was at the top of the hill and one for a J Fox under the ground but found when unearthed was a few spaces to the left of W M Fox. The S Fox down the hill is the Sarah Wood Fox 2nd wife of John Fox Jr. She was the daughter of Elijah Wood and Rachel Honaker. In the heirs deed of William M Fox the 108 acres of land is listed as bordering Elijah Wood's. The other Foxes in unmarked areas are probably John and Lucinda Mathews Fox's children and some of their spouses. The children being Harrison A Fox and wife Catherine Wood, John Fox Jr and his two wives both of which were Woods with one of them having a stone down the hill, Joseph Fox the son that died in 1846 before his father made his will in 1847, and maybe James Madison Fox. I am sure some of the daughters including Mahala Cole, Nancy Shanahan, Elizabeth Jane Skaggs, and Mary Jane Martin may be candidates also. Felix A Wood, son of Amos Wood & Susan Parrish, already had a Gov't Confederate Civil War stone marking his grave there. This has been up a while. Was it damaged? Are they putting up a new stone for him or is this a ceremony to honor him? I have digital video of his marker from two years ago. Hope to see everyone at the reunion and dedications on Sunday. Sherranlynn, Yes, we believe John, Lucinda and Susannah as well as Felix A Wood are all buried in this cemetery. As well as William Miles and Sarah Carey. We have located about 40 graves in the Fox section. The property where this cemetery is located is believed to be the same as the original land grant for William M Fox of 15 acres Jeannette ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherranlynn Kincaid Nichols <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2001 2:33 PM Subject: Re: [WVFAYETT] RE FOX REUNION > Is Lucinda Matthew wife of John Fox, bur. in the same cemetery? Betty, Nothing specific about parking, but we hope to have someone directing. I am sure someone will be. We will start parking cars as close to the Fox Section as we can. Then work down toward the Chestnutburg Road. We have tried to find someone who could (would) shuttle older people and others from their cars to the dedication area. We may commandeer a couple of the younger men to shuttle back & forth with passengers from their cars. I don't believe we will have any trouble. Looking forward to seeing all on Saturday and Sunday. William Allen Bowles came from ENGLAND to NEW YORK on the same ship as his wife, both of them worked for 7 years to pay their way. "History of Summers County 1908"-Bowles-There is living on Hump Mountain, in Green Sulphur District several families by the name of Bowles, which is a familiar name to all the inhabitants of Summers County The Original settler, whose name was William Allen Bowles was an Englishman who crossed the ocean shortly after the Declaration of Independence by the thirteen American Colonies. His wife's name was Sarah Preston, and was Irish. Both he and his wife crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the same ship before their marriage and were unable to pay their transportation. Both were arrested and sold for the amount of their ship fare across the sea to New York. William A. Bowles was sold to a tanner and Sarah Preston was sold to a baker, each for a term of seven years. After the expiration of this long period they were married and removed to Franklin County Virginia.
