My Grandmother still lives in Victor, Her maiden name was Willis-daughter of Burdine Willis I have his Social security number, but how can I use it?) and Amie Evans. Grandpa was Henry Wilson, not much is known about his background. (Deceased) My Maternal grandparents moved to Fayette County from Kentucky and followed coalmines from the 40's until the late 60's. They were Cecil Blair and Gussie Ward.(Both deceased.) I have tried to find some sites on the internet that might be helpful, but not much luck so far. Does Fayette county have some of their records available online? Thank you for the reply, Lisa Wilson
Hi, Lisa: Who is (was) your paternal grandmother? What about your maternal side? I think you may find a lot of help on this list. A lot of us come from families that have been in that part of the country since it was wilderness in the late 1700's. I am getting married next year, and I have become very interested in my Family history. I am new to this, so any advice would be most helpful. I have started with me and have gone back to my Paternal Grandmother, from there I need some help. :-) I was born in Fayette County and my families are from that beautiful part of the country. So anything I can find will be appreciated. Thank you, Lisa
Does anyone have connections to Ona Henry CROUSE, b. 23 January 1899 - d. 5 September 1952? He had a brother Clyde CROUSE b. 24 January 1890 - d. 3 June 1922. Thanks to all in advance for any information. Debora Wykle Kerr
Carol Was this a one-teacher school, where teachers were consecutive throughout the years? I have a M M Warren (Mathew Madison 1837-1918) who would probably qualify. He had a nephew James Basham (b. 1852) who would have been too young to teach in 1867, but could have later. I also have a William A Edler b. 1866, same situation. I have more on Mathew Warren, not too much on the others, if you want it. Carol & Joseph Beattie wrote: > The Ennis School was built in 1867. Did Fayetteville Courthouse and town get flooded? Linda
Hi List- I found a whole series of books in the genealogy section of ourt local library that might be of interest. Each book is a death index for years 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1890 (I am not positive on this last one but I think I saw it there on the shelf). Apparently most states put this together and the WV one was published in 1979. For each person it lists their name, county of death, state of birth, age at death, month and cause of death, as well as profession. The profession is listed by code and there are over three hundred different codes that are pretty specific. This was the first time I had seen anything like this for an entire state and I thought that other people might be interested. If you have someone who died in West Virginia in one of those four years, it might be of interest to you. Hi, Sarah: Have you found a grave at the Kincaid Cemetery for a Myrtle Pennington or Myrtle Dangerfield? She is supposed to be buried there, but I don't know if she really is (long story). Thanks for any help! Hi list I have been going through and cross referencing the information provided in Children of Jesse and came to a sticky point I was hoping someone could help me out with. According to the book, James A. Treadway, son of Jesse and Mahala Treadway, he married Elizabeth Dickinson and might have married a Ms WILLIAMS sometime before that. It seems straightforward until I checked with the Fayette Co Marriage Records (by Shuck) and found that he did marry Elizabeth Dickinson June 17, 1867 and was listed as single. According to Fayette County marriage records, it would appear that James could have married a M Williams AFTER Elizabeth. Another record appears later showing the marriage of J Treadway, son of J and M, to Ms M Williams. This J Treadway had been widowed and has the same birth year as James A, son of Jesse and Mahala. It seems to me that James did marry a Williams, as hypothesized by the book, only it was after his first marriage. TREADWAY James A md Elizabeth DICKINSON June 17, 1867; race, w; age, 24, 21; s, s, born; Fayette Co WV, Fayette Co WV, parents: Jesse & Mahala, Michael & n/a. (p.249) TREADWAY J md M WILLIAMS n/a, 1872; race, w; age, 30, 22; w, s, born; Fayette Co WV, Fayette Co WV, parents: J & M, P & P. (p.249) The book Children of Jesse says that James and Elizabeth had nine children together which would have been impossible if James did remarry five years later. Has anyone else found this discrepancy or maybe knows for a fact that the later children were definitely born to Elizabeth? Thanks so much!!! Terry is right on the line of Fayette and Raleigh Co's. about 3 miles north of the New River and west of Prince which is on Rt.41. I have a son-in law that is a Gwinn but he does not have a computer and a lot of his family are buried there so he has been to the cemetery many ,many times. Shirley
Shirley, Thank you so much. I have it pinpointed now. If your son-in-law happens to go there and if Dr Hiram Powers Thomas has a tombstone, I would love the information from it. Thanks again. This helps me a lot. Can anyone tell me the location of the Gwinn Cemetery? I have a letter from 2-14-1898 stating that Hiram Powers Thomas died on 1-31-1898 and is buried in Gwinn. The writer stated there was a new post office called Backus where he would mail the letter and the cemetery was about seven miles from there. The Gwinn Cemetery on-line is listed as three miles below Terry on the New River but I can't find Terry on any map. I also tried to e-mail the two people listed as transcribing this cemetery for Rootsweb as they did not have Hiram listed but both came back as non-deliverable. Hiram was a country doctor in the area but was born in Jackson Co, WV before going west to Indian Territory, OK before moving back to Fayette County to practice. Anything anyone might provide would be appreciated, Thank you very much. Jim
