Hi, I would like to correspond with anyone who is a descendant of or has information on the descendants of Benjamin Noble (ca1801-after 1880) and Catharine Hurt (ca1806-after 1880). Their daughter Malissa Noble (born ca1848-died after 1880) married William James, Dec 20 1874, Fayette Co. WV. William was born in Franklin Co. VA ca1856, died May 1879 in Fayette Co. WV. Children: Mary b ca1875, Elias b ca1877. In 1880 Malissa, now widowed, and her 2 children are living with her parents. I have no record of them after this. William James' death was reported by Floyd James (my g-g grandfather) who is listed as "relative". Any leads appreciated.

Dear Friends in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia My mother, aunt, and cousins are planning a trip to the above mentioned this weekend for genealogy purposes. Got a report that a lot of Mossey had as much as 12 feet of water. I guess the same for Artie but not as bad. Please, how bad is it now?? Any bridges out? Transplant from the mountains to flat land. Mike, The 1880 index yielded no Matilda in the census; Here's all I find: (1880 Fayette Co., WV, Kanawha District): Richard McMillion, 24, farmer, VA/VA/VA Mary 24, wife, VA/VA/VA Alice, 4, daughter, WV/VA/VA Mollie, 1 daughter, WV/VA/VA As for obtaining a death record, well, that's usually a hit and miss proposition until a short time after 1920 since deaths weren't required by state law to be recorded until then. Even a short time after that they were done sporadically. Anything before that time would just be a lucky find I would say -- because it depended on whether a relative or neighbor went to the courthouse to record the death or if the clerk even bothered to record it. They do have births and deaths throughout those early years, but not for every year and not for every event. Your best bet would be to write to the County Clerk to see if they have it. Good luck in your search, Neva In a message dated 7/31/01 10:07:06 PM Eastern Daylight Time, MICHAELBullDawg@aol.com writes: << I would like to be able to find a death record for Richard who died of stomach cancer in 1904. Would the Fayette Courthouse have records back that far? Thanks again for any and all help. Mike McMillion >>
Hi list! It has been a while since I have written but I thought I would say "hello and hope you all are doing well." I am a descendant of Henry F. McMillion (my great grandfather) who raised his family on Loup Creek near Powellton. He was one of the men killed as the result of the train explosion (I have a picture of the wreckage) that happened near there in 1934. Henry was the son of Richard Henry McMillion who also lived near there on Big Right Hand. I would like to be able to find a death record for Richard who died of stomach cancer in 1904. Richard's mother Matilda would have lived there with him too as their place of residence was listed as Fayette County on his marriage certificate in 1876. Would someone with the 1880 Fayette Census be so kind as to look them up for me? I would be forever grateful! Also what would be the chance of finding a death certificate for Richard? Would the Fayette Courthouse have records back that far? Thanks again for any and all help. Mike McMillion
Yes, the School was a one room school. I'm trying to track down any other information about it. One of the Ancestors made a list of teachers, but did not give any other information. The school has been torn down, but we do have a couple of pictures of it. > Carol > Was this a one-teacher school, where teachers were consecutive throughout the years? > > I have a M M Warren (Mathew Madison 1837-1918) who would probably qualify. He had a nephew James Basham (b. 1852) who would have been too young to teach in 1867, but could have later. I also have a William A Edler b. 1866, same situation. > > I have more on Mathew Warren, not too much on the others, if you want it. > > Carol & Joseph Beattie wrote: > > > The Ennis School was built in 1867. Hi, Could someone please do a look-up for me on the 1920 census for a Permellia Pennington? She would have been born ca1914 and went by the nickname Dessie. She would probably be in either Fayette or Kanawha Co. Thanks!! June
Lisa: You know you have received an incurable bite from the genealogy bug when you spend weekends and vacations visiting archives, courthouses, cemeteries, and long-lost cousins; when you're driving down the road, your children in the back seat spy a cemetery and moan "Oh, no, we aren't going to stop there are we?" (and many vacation photos include more photos tombstones than your kids); when your spouse actually begins to understand sentences like "her father was a brother of my great-great grandmother, her mother was the great-granddaughter of my great-great-great grandfather, and her husband was a first cousin of my great-grandfather" instead of looking glassy-eyed and muttering "yes dear, yes dear". A little thing like working for a living getting in the way! HA!! <LOL> Best wishes, June At 04:02 PM 7/31/2001 -0400, you wrote: >Living in Ohio and working makes it very difficult for me to find info, any >good web sites? Lisa, The County Library in Beckley, WV (Raleigh Co.) has a wonderful room called the Heritage Room with all kinds of valuable resources. If you live near there, I recommend some time browsing their info. Susan
