    1. [WVFAYETT] Radford Cemetery
    2. June & Marco
    3. Hi, all: Well, it's getting cold out there, the undergrowth is dying back, and I'm itching (not literally, I hope!!) to tramp up Beards Fork and Mulberry (and a few other places) and poke around the cemeteries. I particularly want to visit the Radford Cemetery again and literally poke around for stones that have fallen over and may be buried a few inches under due to years of forest compost. Unfortunately, my oldest brother isn't going to be able to meet me in WV and help me find the cemetery again. And I don't know if my Uncle Bill is up to it. Can someone help: is it up the Right Fork of Beards Fork or Mulberry? I remember it being back to were the road became an old mining road (we had to get out and walk before then), and that the old fellow who owned the land (a distant relative, but, then, who isn't! <G>) kept some bee hives there. Any help with directions appreciated. Best wishes, June

I would appreciate any help on any of these lines.. Thank you. Becky

    3. Does anyone know anything about a Viola Craft, (don't know if she was married or this is her maiden name). She lived at the poor farm in Oak Hill until it closed in 1950 or so. She was the aunt of Mamie Gilkerson, so her name could have been Gilkerson? According to SS Deaths, there is a Viola Craft, who d. in Oak Hill in 1978. I know she was in the area in 1964, when my foster dad was buried, she came to the funeral. Thanks Sherranlynn

    1. [WVFAYETT] Sarah Sims Foster
    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hi List, I could use some help on the SIMS families listed in the 1850 Fayette County census. I will begin with Sarah SIMS (d/o James SIMS and Elizabeth COTTON*) who married Peyton FOSTER (s/o Nimrod FOSTER and Betsy BROWN) September 6, 1825 in Nicholas County. I am not sure if this date of marriage is correct; it is from the Nicholas County site which lists dates of marriage submitted by researchers. Peyton FOSTER was first married to Nancy JOHNSON (d/o Wm JOHNSON Sr. and Amy NELSON) January 11, 1815; Nancy died September 6, 1825. I don't know where I got this date of death but had it before I found the Foster/Sims marriage date. As you can see Peyton's first wife died on the same day as he married his second wife. Could one of these be incorrect? To continue, Sarah died before 1848 according to the James Sims chancery suit that I posted in July. Her children were Mariah who married Jordan HICKSON bef. 1848, James FOSTER (b. c. 1831), Peyton FOSTER (b. c. 1833), Charles FOSTER (b. c. 1837), and Milton SIMS (b. c. 1824). I believe that Milton was Sarah's son from a previous relationship. This is from my interpretation of the text of the 1848 suit but he may be a son of James SIMS and Elizabeth COTTON. I don't have the census data for Mariah but have found all the sons on the 1850 census: # 158 Milton Sims 26 M Farmer (son of Sarah; his marriage data may list parents) S. L. Sims 31 F (this is possibly a second marriage for S.L. Sims as we see a daughter) Victoria Steele 9 F Sand. B. Sims 1 M # 159 Cyrus Wedge 60 M Farmer b. illegible Jane Wedge 66 F b. Ireland James Foster 19 M Laborer (son of Sarah) Peyton Foster 17 M (son of Sarah) Octava Young 11 F # 160 Johnson Foster 33 M Farmer (I believe that this is a son of Peyton Foster Sr. and Nancy Johnson--need confirmation) Mary Foster 26 F Thomas Foster 6 M James Foster 5 M Johnson Foster 3 Mary E. Foster 2mos. F # 176 Charles Sims 37 M Farmer $500 (this is Sarah's brother) ? Sims 26 F (there's a spot on the image making the first name illegible) ? J. Sims 7 F (idem) E. K. Sims 5 F E. L. Sims 3 F Lydia Sims 1 mos. F Charles Foster 13 M (son of Sarah) I have included Johnson FOSTER above as he immediately follows Milton, James, and Peyton. I do not have the names of any children of Peyton and Nancy (JOHNSON) FOSTER but do believe that Johnson FOSTER must be one of their sons. This has nothing to do with the Sims line but the Johnsons are also one of my lines. If anyone has the 1840 census I would like to know if Peyton FOSTER Sr. is listed in Fayette or Nicholas County. I found him in Nicholas County in 1820 and 1830: 1820 U.S. Federal Census Nicholas County, (West) Virginia Page No: 205B Enumerated by: Hedgman Triplett on: 26th day of December, 1820 Peyton FOSTER (I've added the notes in parenthesis) 2 free white males 0-10 yo (Johnson age 3 and ??) 1 free white male 16-26 yo (Peyton b. c. 1793) 1 free white female 16-26 yo (Nancy b. c. 1794) (Source: Bryant, Neva Jane Stout. USGenWeb Archives. 1820 Federal Census Nicholas County, Virginia. Online <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/nicholas/census/1820.txt> 12 October 2001.) 1830 U.S. Federal Census Nicholas County, (West) Virginia >From an index: F236 Foster, Peyton # 177 No Township Listed His wife Sarah died between 1837-1848 and I need the 1830 and 1840 census to estimate her date of birth. *If she was born bef. 1794 then her mother would have been James Sims' first wife Phebe. Also I do not know when Peyton Sr. died. I'd love to hear from anyone interested the Foster/Johnson or Foster/Sims line. Thanks, Cathy

    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hello List, In early September I asked for some help and in less than a week I received about 24 e-mail replies pertaining to the family of my great-grandaunt Elizabeth Rachel Dempsey and her husband Robert Hughes. I want to thank everyone again for all their help. I've put the pieces of the puzzle together that you have sent me and come up with this family picture. On November 21st, 1822, Matthew Hughes married Margaret Sims in Nicholas County, (West) Virginia. Matthew was the son of Robert Hughes & Elizabeth Tincher and Margaret was the daughter of James Sims and his wife Phoebe. Four children were born to this couple: Susanna b. ca. 1826, Anna b. ca. 1833, Robert b. ca. 1834, and John b. ca. 1835. (est. years of birth taken from 1850 census) Margaret Sims Hughes' father James Sims of Nicholas County died leaving no widow. There is still some question as to when he died -- in 1836 or after 1840. Margaret died before 1848 when a suit was filed "in the circuit supreme court of law and chancery for Nicholas County, Geo. H. Lee being judge; seeking to have the court provide for the sale of the 125 acre farm near Beech Glen, I believe, which was left by James Sims when he died in 1836. The bill of complaint represented that William, Martin, John, James, Dryden, Charles, Washington Sims; Joseph Darlington and Jane (Sims) Darlington, his wife; Joel Settle and Mildred (Sims) Settle, his wife; and Nancy (Sims) Johnson respectfully represent that James Sims, the father of your orators and oratresses departed this life on the ___day of ___1836 intestate and leaving no widow". Heirs included among others "the children of Margaret Hughes, formerly Margaret Sims, to-wit, Matthew Kincaid and Susan his wife; Ann Hughes, Robert Hughes, John Hughes, the last three are infants" In 1850 these four children are found in Nicholas County. The three younger children are living with their father Matthew Hughes while the oldest Susanna is next door with her husband Matthew Kincaid. 1850 Nicholas County, (West) Virginia Census 43rd District Enumerated on 26 August 1850 by D. Below the "Information" sign at the Nicholas County Courthouse there is a framed letter from him freeing a slave named "Isaac". I have put in a query on the Nicholas County List asking about the date this document was written as it may clear up the question of when James Sims died. Robert Hughes age 22 b. Fayette Co s/o Mathew and Margaret married Mar 28, 1858 Nicholas Co Nancy Simms age 21 b. Fayette Co d/o James and Elizabeth. Robert was not found on the 1860 Fayette County Census as a head of household. I suspected that the young couple may have been living with Nancy's parents, James and Elizabeth Simms. The 1860 census shows a Nancy b. ca. 1838 in James Sims' household but she is not listed as Nancy Hughes. Her husband Robert is not found with her. It is possible that he may be living/working in Nicholas County as this is the county they were married in. However he was not found on an index of the 1860 census of Nicholas County. 1860 Census Fayette County, (West) Virginia Household #731 SIMS, James 47 Farmer Elizabeth 47 Nancy 22 Day Labor (b. ca. 1838) Amanda ? James Sims (b. bet. 1813-1816) I believe is the grandson of James Sims (1754-1836) of Nicholas County through his son William. James and Elizabeth Darlington Sims were seen on the 1850 Kanawha County census: 1850 Census Kanawha County, (West) Virginia Household #176/176 Sims, James 36 Elizabeth 36 Nancy 14 Mary J. 12 America 9 Charles 8 William A. 4 Minerva 1 In 1866 James Sims reported the death of his daughter Nancy Hughes, 31 yrs on November 17, 1866. She was listed as born in Fayette County with James and Elizabeth Sims as her parents. Source: Fayette County Death Records 1866-1899, by Larry Shuck Robert HUSE (Single) and Elizabeth DEMPSEY (Single) were married on April 8, 1868 in Fayette County, West Virginia, by C.F. Crooks. Marriage record lists Robert's place of birth as Nicholas Co. and parents as Thomas and n/a. Elizabeth, born ca. 1846, was the oldest child of Sarah Ann WOOD and William A. DEMPSEY. At this point I must stress that I am not sure that Robert Hughes who married Nancy Sims is the same Robert Hughes who married Elizabeth Rachel Dempsey as there are two different names listed for the father. Matthew and Thomas. The 1870 census shows that Rachel and Robert had a son Willie b. ca. 1869. There are also two other children listed. 1870 U. S. I can only assume that these boys were sons of Robert and his first wife.
