I'm going to attempt to interest you in visiting a web site that I developed for a client. Barb Pengelly collects authentic old historic documents with the signatures of some well-known and some obscure folks from the past. What's interesting are the "obscure" folks... everyday people like our ancestors whose names wound up on a document. Well, I'm not describing it very well but browsing her collection yesterday, I realized that she may have something that would help someone tracing their ancestors... a Virginia deed for example, or a bill of sale for a slave... one never knows. Becky, Allen and Maria Sims may be the couple found in the 1860 census with Joseph Sims: HH 688. Joseph Sims, 61, farmer A.H. (m), 33, farmer Mary C., 22, wife David S., 2 Do you have an age for Allen Sims at the time of his marriage? Was he born after the 1860 census? I have someone who is going to send me 1870 and 1880 census info on the Sims as time permits. This is the first time that Joseph shows up in the FayCo census (I've been checking all Sims in Kanawha, Nicholas, and Fayette from 1810-1860). He may have come from Greenbrier Co. There was a Joseph in Greenbrier in 1830, 1840, & 1850. I don't have the Greenbrier figures. He may be a brother/relative of Edward Sims who is seen in Greenbrier in 1820 & 1830 and then in Fayette Co. in 1840 & 1850. Edward was listed twice in 1850, in his own household in Fayette and in the household of his son-in-law Lilburn Sims in Kanawha. He may have died prior to the 1860 census. I have not connected Edward and Joseph Sims to the James Sims line of Nicholas County. Edward's son-in-law Lilburn however is believed to be a son of John Sims (s/o James) and Mildred Hunter. I haven't tried to get any information on Edward and Joseph. If you come across any more Sims please let me know. Hope this may help you. Carol, Yes! Joseph Darlington was the son of Benjamin and Mary Johnson Darlington. This was one of the marriages that I was sure about the parents. The age of Joseph's wife Jane Sims is what I would really like so that I can put her in the correct order in her family. Jane was the daughter of James Sims and Elizabeth Cotton and born between 1810-1813 using the 1850 and 1880 census. I have the 1850 census data for Martin and Milton Sims and would really appreciate the 1860 if you have it. Milton would be the son of Sarah Sims from a previous relationship. Sarah married Peyton Foster after Milton was born. I wonder which Martin this is? At the moment I can't help you with your John E. Sims (1818-1891-Lansing,Fayette Co.WV) mar to Hannah Keeney-1859. I am concentrating on the 15 children of James Sims of Nicholas County. He had a son named John (1787-1869) who married Mildred Hunter in 1812 in Kanawha County according to other Sims researchers. I have not seen anything that proves he was the son of James but I do know that James named a son John. Hi List, Here is the transcript of the James Sims Manumission Letter that Sherry photographed at the Nicholas County courthouse in Summersville. It was very difficult to read so I passed it on to David who I am working with. We are trying to sort through James' 15 children. He transcribed the second half for me. Marsha on the Nicholas Co. Mailing List visited the courthouse and copied most of the letter. As these old documents go three different people don't always come up with the same text word for word. David thought the date was 1835, I read 1836, and Marsha read 26th September 1836. I am expecting a photocopy of the original in the mail which may clear up the question of the date which is the most important part to me at the moment as we are trying to estimate James' year of death. We obtained the following: Know all men by these presents that I James Sims of the County of Nicholas in consideration of a large sum of money paid to me by my slave Isaac as for the additional considerations of his fidelity to me I have on this day manumitted and let him the said Isaac free. To remain and continue from hence forward to all intents and purposes entirely free and discharged from servitude to me my heirs and assigns forever. And for the purpose of removing any difficulty as to the identity of the said Isaac and to enable him to enjoy his Freedom in the most absolute and perfect manner. I also hereby certify and state that the said Isaac was born my slave, that he has resided with me up to this date that he is very black, his stature about five feet five inches, of slender make and about forty three years old, that he has had his right leg broken just above his ankle. Hi List, Can anyone tell me if there is a cemetery in or around Kingston, Fayette County, WV? James Randolph Ingram, son of Thomas Ingram, died of T.B. in 1949 and is buried in Kingston. His wife was Virginia Mae. She may have been a Mosley or remarried a Mosley after James' death in 1949. He also had brothers Thomas, Harry, Reginald and sister Stella.
