    1. [WVFAYETT] Carnafix/ Early Mtn Cove Churches
    2. Mark Rain
    3. Thanks to those who answered my query on William Carnafix. The origin of my question was that he married several of my Ryan kin and neighbors of the Ryans, and I wanted to know if he had a religious affiliation. I am researching what churches may have been active in the Mtn Cove/ Leander area going back to the beginning of Fayette Co. circa 1830-1860. Since many of my Ryan kin appear to have been married by civil ceromony, I have wondered whether a) they were involved in a local church and b) whether a local church was available to be involved with. The closest church to the old Ryan farm in Leander was Richmond Chapel but Peters and Carden write that Richmond Chapel wasn't built until 1876. Does anyone know of pre-Civil War churches/circuits in Mtn Cove? -Mark Mark Rain wrote: > All, > > William Carnafix performed many marriages in Fayette Co between 1830-1850, > many in Mtn Cove District. 3. Hello, all: I know this seems weird, but I know many of us with Fayette Co. families also had ancestors and relatives of ancestors who migrated into Ohio. I am hoping some of you may also have records for Ohio; what I'm looking for is the 1900 Champaign Co., Ohio census. Please contact me if you have access to this. Best wishes, June

    1. [WVFAYETT] Mecca #8
    2. June & Marco
    3. Hi, all: Can anyone give me specifics as to where Mecca #8 was located? Looking at the census record, it would seem to be in the Montgomery, Powellton, Hickory Camp area. Floyd H. James, age 67, enumerated at Mecca #8 in 1910, was a carpenter for the mines. I'm trying to find where he is buried and I'm thinking at age 67, this may have been his last residence. Thanks! June

    1. [WVFAYETT] 1910 Fayette census
    2. June & Marco
    3. Hello, all: I have the AllCensus CD of the 1910 Fayette Co. census. Has anyone yet gone through and created any sort of index? While it would be great if there were an alphabetic listing of everyone by Soundex (hey, I like to have my cake and eat it too just as much as the next guy), I would be happy with a breakdown just by District. For example, I know that file 058a starts the files that go up Mulberry and I know the ones for Beards Fork and Kincaid. If no one else has done this yet, I will sit down and start doing it. Best wishes, June

    1. [WVFAYETT] Caldwell's of Montgomery?
    2. Sandy
    3. I don't know anything about the Montgomery area so bear with me please. Was Montgomery spread out back in 1910? Montgomery is the listed as the birthplace of Ruth Hazel Caldwell-trying to use that as a starting point for the census.. Does anyone know of any CALDWELL's of Montgomery back in the early 1920's? I realize that that is a large area. I am specifically looking for the JOHN CALDWELL ( possibly JOHN HENRY CALDWELL) and VIOLA LONG. I know of at least 2 daughters-RUTH HAZEL born July 9, 1910 and Annie Belle.. Ruth Hazel is my husband's link- we got the death cert. from Detroit, MI yesterday. She died there in 1965. She is buried in Culloden Cemetery. She married KENNETH HAMILTON. Don't know his parents names either. He is possibly from the same area. I am trying to get the parents info. I have been told that Viola is the daughter of LAWRENCE LONG & VIOLA ??? Is there a "Poutin' Holler" somewhere in the area? that name has come up as well. Any help or hints is appreciated. 1. [WVFAYETT] Badtrans
    2. June & Marco
    3. Hi, all: I'd like to add a little to Julie's warning. I've starting to receive copies of Badtrans from people I believe are on this list. When I get such a message, I do reply to the person, warning them of their possible infection. In order to reply, though, you can't simply hit reply; it is necessary to delete a character added by Badtrans to the return address. On all the copies I've received so far, this is an underline preceding their address (for example, my address if sent by Badtrans would be "[email protected]".) If you would like to check your hard disk for a copy of Badtrans, MSNBC has listed the common file name variants in this article: http://www.msnbc.com/news/663187.asp Happy hunting to everyone, but as the duty sergeant used to say on "Hill Street Blues" (showing my age): Let's be careful out there. Best wishes, June

    1. [WVFAYETT] Bad Email
    2. Julie McGrew-Ayres
    3. You're receiving this email warning about the newest virus on the loose, [email protected] I battled this virus at work only to come home and find several emails with the virus attached have been sent to me... that's how common it is. And those won't be the last, I'm sure. How do I recognize emails carrying this virus? 1-- I opened the email to find it blank. However, the attachment had a dual file extension to its name. For example: news_doc.MP3.pif or news_doc.MP3.scr. The attachments carry the badtrans virus --or-- 2-- The sender's email address looks like this: [email protected] --or-- 3-- There was nothing in the subject line or it said only "RE:" or it said "RE: something that may have pertained to me" which is why I opened it in the first place (the email, NOT the attachment). The BadTrans virus spreads like a worm but a Trojan is released. The Trojan logs the infected computer's keystrokes and emails them along with the infected pc's passwords to one or more of several addresses where the virus's creator then has access to them. Think that's not bad? Keystrokes include credit card numbers and billing information provided during online transactions... that's what makes BadTrans such a pain. Maybe you don't purchase items online, maybe you don't have to worry about someone getting hold of your passwords. But what about all the folks whose email addresses are listed in your personal address book who will receive an infected email from you after you've opened an infected attachment? The good news: The virus is easy to get rid of if you've got a good Anti-Virus program installed on your machine. And if you're a MAC user, this one probably won't affect you (that comes from the Apple Corp). The short of it: GET Anti-Virus protection and keep the definitions updated (once every two weeks). I recommend Norton's (www.symantec.com). McAfee and the program that came installed on your computer won't cut the mustard. More info on this virus can be found at: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] ml If I've ruffled any feathers, I apologize but the very least I can say is that I made you aware. Ramsey, daughter of Thomas Henderson Ramsey and Mary E. McCutcheon? Is Livigne the correct spelling? I have one daughter of Ella J. (Ramsey) Kincaid listed as Vivian and am wondering if Lee V. Kincaid who married Rona Ethel Legg is from this same family group? Any help would be appreciated on the children's names and birthdates/locations of Livigne and Ella (Ramsey) Kincaid. 1. [WVFAYETT] Radford Cemetery, Mulberry Hollow, Robson, WV
    2. June & Marco
    3. Sarah Kincaid and I visited this cemetery on Saturday, Nov 3 2001. Directions: Take Rt. 61 from Montgomery or Oak Hill to Robson. Turn into Dempsey Branch (on the left if coming from Montgomery; on the right if coming from Oak Hill). Note: if coming from Oak Hill, there is also a Dempsey Branch located on Rt. 61 directly across from the Loup Creek Baptist Church at Wriston; this is not the correct Dempsey Branch. Dempsey Branch at Robson is located between Deepwater and Beards Fork. When Dempsey Branch forks, keep to the right fork (which is straight ahead; the left fork is a sharp left.) Keep going until you reach the last group of dwellings. The road will ford the creek (no more bridges) and just beyond this will be fence posts with "No Trespassing" signs. Cross the creek and drive between the fence posts. Cross the creek one more time and start looking to the left. You will see a pile of logs and immediately beyond this will be an old logging road which has logs laid in it, not to block the road but which are laid horizontally on the ground for traction because apparently there is a natural spring which keeps the ground moist. For those who have visited the cemetery before, the bee hives are gone, so this is no longer a landmark. Park your car (I was able to drive my Toyota Corolla to this point with no problem) and walk up the hill on the old logging road. Keep a watch on your right for the myrtle (periwinkle) growing on the ground and you will see the tombstones. The cemetery is overgrown but we were told by the Stovers (who live in the houses closest to the cemetery) that it was cleaned off about 10 years ago. So it is not as bad as it might be. It desperately needs cleaned again and the stones set upright. I would be more than happy to coordinate with anyone who would like to join me in this venture. There appear to be about 25 graves in 3 neat rows, so a rake, pruning shears, a mattock, and a good afternoon would probably be sufficient. The cemetery, starting nearest the logging road (the old cemetery road runs beneath the cemetery but is less passable than the logging road), from lowest moving up the hill, to the remnants of an old fence which we believe marks the upper boundary of the cemetery: Susan Radford January 18 1863 July 22 1937 Nora Susan Settle Radford was the daughter of Joseph Charles Settle and Naoma Mills; wife of William Harrison Radford. ********* William H. A. Crow February 22 1855 February 9 1893 (or maybe 1899) This stone is broken off through the date of death, making the last number difficult to read. Sarah and I agreed it looked most likely to be a "3". William T. Crow married Oppie Caroline (Orpah Carolina) Radford, daughter of William Amos and Ruth James Radford, October 23 1877. Could this be her grave? Do I have her name incorrect in my records? The tombstone definitely reads "C. A. Crow" and the footstone is carved "CAC". Any thoughts appreciated. This grave is just below the fence. ******** Row 2, again starting lowest and moving uphill. The first grave is across from the first fieldstone in Row 1. Charles H. This is the grave of a child or infant, given the size and also that there is a lamb on the stone. There is an epitaph, but it is illegible. ******** Lillie Myers February 25 1889 Borne home by angels hands Daughter of Charles T. Myers and Mary Ann Radford. Daughter of Wm. & Ruth Radford died February 17 1873 3 years 8 months 13 days I calculate Delilah's birth as June 4 1869. Please comfirm. End of readings. ********* Reuben James and his wife Virginia "Jane" Smith are known to be buried in this cemetery. (There is a stone for Reuben in the McKinney-James Cemetery in Beards Fork, but this was placed there by his great-grandson Charles Andrew James as a memorial.) I have seen Jane's tombstone in the past but it will require cleaning the cemetery to find it. Family legend is that Reuben's stone fell into his grave while they were covering the body and, being superstitious, they didn't take it out, but shoveled the dirt over it. However, another descendant, Fred James (now deceased) said that he recalled seeing carved stones for both Reuben and Jane in the cemetery. I recall now too, that Reuben's supposed to be buried about where the big tree is. I remember it being said a big tree was growing "on his grave", although the big tree in the cemetery appeared to be more at the head of a grave. Keep in mind this area has been logged more than once--very recently as a matter of fact--and a "big tree" is rare. I'd say the only reason this tree is there is that the logging company can't touch the cemetery. Best wishes to all, June
