    1. [WVFAYETT] UNDERWOOD
    2. Beverly Thomas
    3. I have posted on this surname previously but without any luck, maybe this time I will connect with someone who is researching this surname. Martha Hancock, dau/o Frances James Hancock and half-sister to Reuben James, m. Robert Underwood in 1839 in Franklin Co., Virginia. They left Franklin Co. in the early part of 1850 for Monroe Co. Va/WV. The following is the listing of Robt. and Martha Underwood found in the 1860 Monroe Co. census. "Robert Underwood, 44, personal $120; Martha, 39; Emanuel, 17; Frances A. (age smudged); Ellin 5, and James R., 2." I am assuming that Robt. and Martha Hancock Underwood came to Monroe Co. soon after her half-brother, Reuben James bought his family to Monroe in the early part of the 1850's from Franklin Co. Reuben later moved his family to Fayette County, after the Civil War. I do not know if Martha or any of her children may have followed her half-brother and his family to Fayette Co. If you have a connection to Robt. and Martha, I would love to hear from you. Bev

    1. [WVFAYETT] List Automations
    2. Julie McGrew-Ayres
    3. Hi folks. I thought I should share some of what the list system will do automatically so none of you feel as though I'm picking on you personally when something "unexplained" happens. 1. If messages to the list/digest bounce from your email address three (3) times in succession for one or more reasons below, your email address is automatically unsubscribed. What reasons are there for bouncing email? - your email server is down for a period of time - your email inbox is full ("quota exceeded") - your email server doesn't recognize your account - your email account was canceled by your ISP (AOL for example) - you canceled your email account without unsubscribing it from the list 2. If a non-subscriber (often these are spammers) sends a message to the list, it comes to me instead. 3. If someone sends a message in HTML format, the system rejects it and sends the sender a "Help" message along with a notice to me. Often these are sent by "spammers" as well, so not only do they bounce, they come to me as well. 4. If someone tries to send a huge message, the system rejects it and sends me a notice along with the rejected message. 5. If someone tried to send a message with an attachment, the system rejects it and sends me a notice along with the rejected message. The best advice is: - download email from your server frequently, - keep your email account current with your ISP - unsubscribe old email address BEFORE you cancel them - never send a message in HTML format - never send a message with an attachment - never send photos Hopefully, this is not too uninteresting to read. Thank you for your patience with me! Julie McGrew-Ayres mailto:[email protected] Fayette County WV Genealogy www.rootsweb.com/~wvfayett/ WVFAYETT-List Admin

    1. [WVFAYETT] Good ol' Aunt Zingrella...
    2. Sandy
    3. Good morning everyone.. Anyone ever heard of a ZINGRELLA STEWART? Or the name Zingrella? Don't know of a middle name or initial.. Just Zingrella... In looking at the 1920 census page another list member graciously found for me, we came across the name ZINGRELLA STEWART.. At the time of the census she is living in the Kanawha Dist. Montgomery #10 precinct. She is the 1/2 sister to my husband's grandmother-that makes her a great aunt? She was born 1911-1912. Mother is Viola Long Stewart Caldwell. Father was Joseph Arley (not sure about the middle name)Stewart. He died- date and cause unknown and Viola married John Henry Caldwell. Maybe back then after being married awhile the children took the last name of the stepfather.. I'm just curious as to whatever happened to her.. Her name is very unusual-at least to me. Thanks, Sandy Hamilton

    1. [WVFAYETT] Nancy Johnson, widow of William Johnson Jr.
    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hi List, I hope that someone on the Fayette list has the 1850 census of Kanawha County and can do a lookup for me: Nancy Ann SIMS JOHNSON, the widow of William JOHNSON Jr., moved from Fayette County to Kanawha County around 1849 with her children Alexander, William Hunter, and Nancy according to "Sissonville A Time To Remember By The Sissonville Historical Awareness Committee" http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvkanawh/Sissonville/index.html. I assume that Nancy may be found with her children William (age ca. 18) and Nancy (age ca. 15) in the Sissonville area of Kanawha County. Alexander (age 30) was still in Fayette County. I have checked all her married children in 1850 and the only one she could have been with was John Brown JOHNSON (age ca. 27) who may also be found in Kanawha (or Fayette) in 1850; he was in Kanawha 1860 and 1870. In 1850 he would be listed with his wife Mary Ann (age ca. 28) and son Julian (age ca. 3). In 1860 I have Nancy in the household of her son William Hunter JOHNSON; her son Alexander JOHNSON is living next door. By 1870 Nancy was deceased and her sons were still living next door to each other. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cathy

    1. [WVFAYETT] Laura Blake - Other works
    2. Mark Rain
    3. List, A number of people sent me information regarding Laura Blake's journal. Thanks to all! Apparently, Laura Blake also had another work, "History of Early Methodism", (1961). I don't know if this was a book, article. Does anyone have any information on this? Do I have the title correct? If this work is regarding Fayette Co, I would love to know more about it. Thanks for any help, Mark Rain

    2. Mark Rain
    3. All, Does anyone on the list have a copy of "Residents of Fayette Co (West) Virginia 1860", annotated by Bonnie Blake Harper, (1988)? There apparently is a copy of this at The Cultural Center at Charleston. I have seen a few excerpts and Ms Blake's annotations appear extensive and detailed. She matches the census with family history information. There are some items regarding my Ryan ancestors that I have seen no where else. I am curious about her sources. If anyone has a copy or knows about Ms Harper's work, please let me know. Thanks, Mark Rain

    1. [WVFAYETT] Laura Blake Journal
    2. Mark Rain
    3. All, Does anyone have copy of the "Laura Blake Journal"? Apparently, Ms Blake was a long time school teacher in Fayette Co, and collected information, either on the history of Fayette Co, or genealogical information. It seems she intended to publish her manuscript, but passed away before she had the opportunity. I saw one web site reference her manuscript, and thought someone on the list might have a copy. I was curious what kind of information it might hold. Thanks, Mark Rain

    1. [WVFAYETT] Death lookup at the Anderson-Hairston Funeral Home -1981
    2. Good afternoon everyone, Is anyone familiar with the Anderson-Hairston Funeral Home in Montgomery that could seek some information for me on a death from Jan. 7, 1981? The death is for Cleopatra Toler Brown who lived and died in Charleston. The funeral home above was in charge of the arrangements. The Charleston Gazette from Jan. 8, 1981 doesn't have any information on her except to say what street she lived on. I was wondering if someone on the list living closeby could call them to see if they have where she was buried and any other family information on her. The short obit in the paper didn't mention husband, children or anything else to do with family. I am real interested in her first name of Cleopatra since I am hunting a relative by that same name, Cleopatra (Shuttleworth) Brown who lived earlier than this one. I was trying to see if they were related in any way by my Cleo's children's marriages, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Take care, Wesley Legg in Athens, Alabama, desc. of Legg's, Ramsey's, etc. in Fayette Co.

    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hi List, I found several photos of Sims tombstones online and could use some help. They were taken at Montgomery Memorial Gardens, London, Fayette County, West Virginia. The stones are from the 1860's and a bit hard to decipher. Does anyone have a reading of this cemetery? The tombstones are for: Emeline Britt June 15, 1834-Feb 16, 1867 (this is the only one that I could easily read. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Sims and the wife of Marine Britt.) In the area of the above: Thomas H. Sims Sep ?, 1838?-Apr 12, 18?? (s/o Jonathan & Elizabeth Sims) Amanda wife of T. H. Sims died Oct ???? age ?? (the pilar type stone looks the same as Thomas') William Sims June 10, 1846-March 18, 1866? could also be 1868 (s/o Jonathan & Elizabeth Sims) There may be more Sims in the cemetery but they were not photographed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cathy
