Hello, all: I noted in today's Beckley obituaries mention of a McKinney Cemetery on Gaymont Mountain. Since the individual's funeral service is being conducted in Fayetteville, I assume Gaymont Mountain is near the community of Gaymont? Does anyone know which branch of the McKinney family is buried in this cemetery? It's the first I'd ever heard of it, but I'd like to hear more. Best wishes, June g-g-g granddaughter of Joseph Floyd McKinney and Mildred Ellen Mills
Hi Listers, With the help of many other Sims descendants I gathered documentation that enabled me to write a biography for my 5th great-grandfather, James Sims of Nicholas County, (West) Virginia. Most of James' children lived in the Kanawha, Nicholas and Fayette counties and married into the families of the area including: Windsor, Johnson, Hughes, Hunter, Neal, Fowler, Stanley, Foster, Settle, Darlington, Summers, and Bays. The next generation married into the following families: Cochran, Backus, Murphy, Kelly, Light, Kincaid, Jarrett, Montgomery, Jones, Sprinkle, Tucker, Underwood, Gilliland, Walker, Huddleston, Ingram, Miller, Huffman, Samuels, Martin, Hall, Dempsey, Steele, Wood, Arthur, Blake, Whalen, Morris, Nichols, Hedrick, Smailes, Straughan, Carper, McCarty, Beirne, as well as many of the families mentioned for the first generation. My line down from James Sims: James Sims[1] and his wife Phebe Nancy Ann Sims[2] and her husband William Johnson Jr. Huldah Johnson[3] and her husband Robert Ingram Irvin L. Ingram[4] and his wife Mary M. Dempsey Laura Belle Ingram Dempsey[5] and her husband William Henderson Dempsey Fred Rothwell Dempsey[6] and his wife Myrtle Hazel Roop Fred Roosevelt Dempsey[7] and his wife Catherine Josette Wildinger Catherine Ann Dempsey[8] married to Egon Meder David Fridley has uploaded the James Sims biography that I wrote and made it available for download. It can be reached at http://www.fridley.net/sims/. The file is 2.1 MB, so he added a 1.2 MB option for a zipped version of the file. Folks on IE 5 can also open the Word document directly in the browser to read or print. Feel free to pass this information on to others. Please e-mail me with comments, suggestions, corrections, or additions. Thank you. Best regards, Cathy Meder-Dempsey
Can anyone please tell me what town was formerly called "Tipler" in WV? It is in the 1920 Census list. Thank you, Pat Davis Worlledge [email protected]
Am searching for information on Jane Peters who was born 23 June 1831 in the Franklin County, VA area and who died sometime before 2 July 1864, somewhere in WV. A letter written by James Peters, brother of Jane, and dated 2 July 1864, states simply that she is dead and does not give any other details. James was living in Boone County, WV and sent the letter to another brother, Zachariah, who was living in Franklin County, VA. A Jane Peters is found in 1860 Raleigh County, VA/WV census records residing in the home of Henderson Shumate. This has been proven to be a different Jane Peters. This one is a sister to Fidella Peters, wife of Henderson Shumate. There is evidence found in Fayette County, VA/WV records of a John Basshaw/Basham marrying a Jane Peters on 14 September 1848.The couple was married by Alfred Beckley. I believe that this is the marriage record of my Jane Peters. Another of her brothers, Henry T. Peters, married Rebecca F. Clay in Fayette County on 2 February 1847. Henry & Rebecca were married by James Dolliver. I find a James & Jane Basham living in 1860 Boone County, VA/WV with a one- month-old child Ellen. Annotated Census records state they were married 9 March 1860. Boone County marriage records tell us that the nuptial occurred there and that this Jane was Jane Ferrell, d/o Elizabeth Ferrell. 1870 Boone County Census annotation shows her to be the d/o William & Elizabeth Ferrell. Another dead-end. Can anyone help me find the elusive Jane Peters who may have married James Basshaw/Basham? She was my ggg aunt. Thank you in advance for any information. As always, I look forward to reading your comments. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

I'm wondering if anyone on this list has access to the 1900 Census for Fayette County. I am searching for my grandfather, Seth Conley. He would have been about 15 years of age in 1900. His parents were Henry and Mary Jane Conley. I am not certain of when Henry died, so Seth may have been living with one or both of his parents. One known sibling of Seth's was his sister, Elizabeth, sometmes called Lizzie. Any info at all will be most appreciated. Thanks. Sequoyah

Hello All, For those of you that have relatives who lived in the Hinton area, I have a picture of a group of men in front of the Hinton Courthouse. This is said to have been those that served in the Civil War. I can not confirm this or even if it was in front of the Hinton Courthouse. However, I do have one of my relatives in the picture and he did in fact live in Hinton. For anyone interested , I would be happy to scan the picture to you. Perhaps someone could help identify some of these men. Please email your request directly to me at [email protected] Thank you, Becky Fox Shuff

Hello, This past weekend I was on Beury Mt. (go to Thurmond and up, up, up) looking for a cemetery. I have searched for this cemetery for 30 years but this time I was lucky. A young man who lives in Thurmond in the blue house has a bicycle shop in the old post office in Thurmond. He told me that every year there is a reunion of Beury Mt. descendents. Also he told me how to find the cemetery. Go five miles up the road, County Route 25, until you reach a white house on the left. Turn in the driveway of this house and go past the house, thru a field and into the woods. Behold! The cemetery! Cleaned and mowed with every stone visible. I was able to go right to the stones of my great aunt and great uncles who had died on Beury Mt. in early 1900's. The uncles were killed in the mines and the aunt died of appendicitis. Now my questions.....does anyone know the name of the person who lives in the blue house and has the bicycle shop? Also I would like any information about the reunion? I hope this helps anyone else who may have looked for this cemetery. Linda
Cathy, The 1860 Fayette Co, VA census shows: HH 473- 429. Elizabeth McVEY, 30, f, wife (overwritten on "governess") Real Estate, 1000, Pers. Estate, 100, b. VA Anderson H., 13, m, VA, in school Jacob S., 10, m, VA Thomas S., 8, m, VA Mary C., 3, f, VA (Aicher and Workman transcript has Mary E. in error) Mary J. JOHNSON, 18, f, VA Hiram KIOUS, 25, m, day laborer, VA I don't find any appropriate marriages for a Mary Johnson or variants in Fayette Co. By 1860, Harrison and Adeline had removed to Kanawha Co., and Mary was the only child not with them. It's possible she may have been married in Kanawha Co.
