    1. [WVFAYETT] Searching for Gertrude MORRIS
    2. I am searching for information on my great grandmother. Her name was Gertrude Vaden MORRIS. She was born Oct 14, 1888, in Montgomery, WV. At least, my grandfather thinks she was born there, and he knows that she grew up there. She died September 14, 1967, in Huntington, WV. She married Erie Gabriel HATCHER of Odd, WV, around 1912 (most likely in Montgomery, but I am not sure). He was a railroad man in Huntington. I do not know anything about her parents or anything like that. She had 2 sisters that my grandfather remembers, Alma MORRIS, who married Woodrow O'DELL, and Carrie MORRIS, who never married, and one brother, Charles Haskiel MORRIS, also never married. This is all that I know about her (well I know her kids and grandkids and all that, since that's my family). We think her parents may have died before she was married, since her brother is the person on her wedding invitation, not her parents. My grandfather doesn't remember anything about her parents at all. I looked on a map, and it seems that Montgomery is on the county line between these Kanawha and Fayette County, so I thought I'd try both of you. I am going to try to make it to the Cabell County Courthouse the next time I get a day off, to see if I can find her death certificate, as some one told me that it may contain information (that's one thing I've never tried). I'm just an amateur at genealogy, and have gotten lucky that several of my lines have been worked on by family members already. This is just one area that we are stuck at, and stuck really close in time to the present. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. 1. [WVFAYETT] Levi Kincaid, born ca1830
    2. June & Marco
    3. Hello, all: Trying to tie up some loose ends in my Settle family. On April 12 1877, William A. Settle, son of James Settle and Rachel Johnson, married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth C. Kincaid. I believe Elizabeth C. Kincaid, born ca1856, was the daughter of Levi and Nancy Kincaid, both born ca1830. Looking at the census records, it appears Levi may be the son of Huldah Kincaid, who was a widow at the time of the 1850 census. My questions: Does anyone know if this lineage for Elizabeth C. Kincaid is correct? If so, what was Nancy's maiden name? Also, what was Huldah's maiden name and which Kincaid was her husband? If I am barking up the wrong tree, does anyone know the correct lineage for Elizabeth C. Kincaid? Thanks a mint! Best wishes, June

    1. [WVFAYETT] Andersons of Fayette Co
    2. Greetings. My name is Meg Fuller and I am researching the Anderson family in Fayette County. My GGgrandfather was Samuel Anderson b 1844 in Fayette and died 1939 in Kanawha Co. He married Valaria Elizabeth Curtis aka Vallie or Belle in Kanawha County. She died c 1890. It has been suggested that Sam may have been the son of George and Mary? Anderson of Fayette Co. I would appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give. I have been at a brick wall with Samuel for quite some time. Thank you, Meg Fuller

    1. [WVFAYETT] John TOWNSEND
    2. Alan & Lynn Hudson
    3. Hi; I just came back from a genealogical research trip to Salt Lake City. I found a Benjamin TOWNSEND on an 1810 and an 1820 Census of Greenbrier, VA. He had two male children and an older female (hopefully his wife). I feel fairly certain that Benjamin is the Father of John TOWNSEND who came to Fayette County in 1841 and bought land from an Elijah Wood. John married Eliza Darnell / Darnall and lived his life in what is now Lansing, WV. (My TOWNSEND cousins know what I am talking about here) Anyway . . . I was surprised to find or should I say that I did not find any marriage indexes for the years of 1855 - ??? I was looking in a marriage index for my GGGrandfather Benjamin TOWNSEND who married a Julia Rule in 1855. I was reading 1853, 1854 and then "1855 - ??? were lost". Lost??? Where did they go??? Are there any records at the Court House in Fayetteville??? My Family Bible indicates that they lived in Mt. Cove. Does anyone know which Church they would have been! married in or if the Church even kept any records??? I am having a hard time finding parents for Julia. I came across a book entitled The Rule Family of East Tennessee and Extended Points compiled and edited by William Rule III. Of course there is no mention of a "Julia" in any part of this book. Now I am beginning to wonder if Julia really was her name. She is indicated on Census' by Julia and my Great Grandmother's death certificate says that her Mother's name was Julia Rule. (Actually it is spelled Rhule . . . but that doesn't help me either. The German spelling would have been Ruel) The Rule's were from Botetourt County. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions of where to look next. I was there last October and of course I now wish that I could have found more information. Lynn Hudson GGGranddaughter of Benjamin and Julia Rule TOWNSEND

    1. [WVFAYETT] School Picture - Victor, Fayette Co, WV
    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hi listers, I have an undated photo of 4 teachers and 43 students who went to school with my father, Fred R. "Freddy" Dempsey, in Victor. The group is standing on the steps of the school. The first names are all listed on the back of the photo along with an initial for the last name (thank you Grandma for finishing the job my Dad started). My father was born in November 1935 and none of his siblings are in the photo (the closest were born in 1931 and 1941). Dad went to Ansted High School (up on the hill) and this may be the last year that he attended the school in Victor (maybe 1948-1950??). Does anyone know what grades were taught there? The school house in Victor has been been torn down and school buses now park on the lot. The Dempseys lived next door, to the right of the lot; the post office is on the left. Here are the names written on the back of the photo: 1st row (back row from left to right) Bobby Morrison, Dale McGraw, Howard P., Frederick O., Calvin A., Jack S., Billy L., Joel T. 2nd row Freddy Dempsey, Byrl S., Haymond P., Edna P.*, Inez L.*, Pauline B.*, Ge?? The CCC would bring to the minds of the people a real foundation for the needs and values of a sound active conservation program to work for a clean livable environment in this free equal-opportunity society. ----- Original Message ----- From: "jay alexander" <[email protected]> To: "Debby Bolen" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 04, 2002 4:25 PM As a Citizen, kindly discuss this as an employment issue with your esteemed colleagues for the reactivation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), this nation's best National Service. Americans love to serve their country in National Service and this would be an alternative to serving in the US Military. The CCC was the most successful by protecting, defending, and preserving our natural resources and also benefited our cultural and human resources too. What Federal Agency that does this today? Now concerns are about rising unemployment, juvenile and corrosive white-collar crime, war cries, and the loss of trust in our government. Our fear is for our future generations. Unless some measures are taken soon, they will grow up in a land without air to breath and water to drink as well as being ill educated without employment. Natural resources are vital to the existence and progress of every nation. Then as well as today we are being lulled into complacency about our nations vital natural resources. President Franklin D. Roosevelt wasn't fooled and left us a legacy that we should bring back. In his first 100 days in office, he legislated a real national service known by all as the Civilian Conservation Corps. We should again re-legislate and reactivate this useful national service. FDR knew the value of a dollar and got the most action for the buck! This agency was extremely cost effective and yielded a greater return in its investment from training and fielding the largest non-combatant workforce in US History that restored our nations natural resources and also benefited our human and cultural resources. The CCC would bring to the minds of the people a real foundation for the needs and values of a sound active conservation program to work for a clean livable environment in this free equal-opportunity society. A modified Civilian Conservation Corps would be modeled after the original CCC, but made a permanent Federal agency. Its mission would provide a pool of manpower and funding from agencies charged by the US Congress with the development, protection, and use of the nations natural resources for future generations. (To insure CCC funding Congress could add an open contribution box next to the election campaign box on all income tax forms.) Public works and conservation tasks would be updated and perform controlled burning, remove commercial logging roads in public forests, and remove trash and toxics left by illegal dumping in areas worked. Similar public sector programs and out sourced privatized work that overlap the agencies mission would be absorbed. This agency would not run interference with any other Federal agency in fulfilling her mission. Privatization and any attachment to corporate or special interest groups would be prohibited. Incentives for enrolling would be equal opportunity hiring fit up to the age of 35, good pay and allotments held or given to those in need. Time served would count towards retirement in government sector jobs and would provide them with better job opportunities in the public and private sector. To achieve this, all would receive the GI Bill of 1944 for education for National Service rendered as a payback of the trust and investment by and for the people of the United States. Educational institutions would receive both mature students and ready payment. To ensure a solid base for manpower, those who want to join the military would serve a mandatory evaluation period of six months. This would save "washing " recruits out as unfit for duty and they would get partially trained and evaluated recruits. We would get well-rounded officers and men with experience from the leadership, administration, and field command of CCC enrollees. The agency would have open job assignments for honorably discharged military personnel to acclimatize them back into society and the labor pool. At the recent Earth Summit, World Leaders do not look to us as environmental leaders, but as squanderers. America consists of only 4% of the world's population and we consume 25% of the world's resources. America needs to be more efficient and self-reliant and must give constant concern and vigilant national attention and protection to the conservation of its natural resources. The Civilian Conservation Corps would serve in that role and make our citizens more environmentally aware, vigilant and concerned as stewards of this fragile planet. Today, a number of US citizens and elected officials have family members who served in this great national service. Many surviving CCC enrollees have more pride in their CCC national service than any time of their lives including their military service. It would be a true indicator of how much our elected leaders do care for employmentin our equal opportunity society and culture, and for our precious environment around election time. This national service successfully demonstrated that no conflict came between the preservation of the environment and the creation of jobs. The Civilian Conservation Corps reactivation would mean a better environment, job creation, and is a non-partisan win-win proposition! > Sen. 2. Marco & June
    3. Hello, all: I have an easy question (maybe?) today. <G> Who was the second wife of Preston Kincaid? I have that he married 1) Margaret Johnson Feb 15 1854. As she is not listed in the 1860 census with her husband and children, I assume she died prior to the census. 2) ?? There are more children in Preston's 1870 household, but again, as in 1860, he no wife is listed. 3) Ann Eliza Thompson August 03 1871 (although I am puzzled by the death of the child Adam Kincaid, aged 1 month, April 14 1871, who is listed as a child of Preston and A.E. Kincaid). Ann Eliza died Oct 1876, about 2 months after the birth of her daughter Eliza. 4) Amanda Clay Dec 13 1877. Preston and Amanda are listed, along with their many children, in the 1900 census. Thanks! June

    3. Hello, all: There is a Civil War letter being auctioned on eBay. The seller transcribed the letter in his description. It is dated Nov. 20th, 1862 and is from Bartley E. Stevenson,Co. D. 34th Regiment-Camp Loop Creek- Kanawha Valley, Virginia & written to his cousin Prembrook S Scott Ohio 118th Regiment-Falmouth, Kentucky. (BTW, every time I see something like this being sold on eBay I remind my children I will come back and haunt them the rest of their days and then nag them after they're dead if any of my genealogical work or family heirlooms end up being auctioned off after I'm dead. Don't forget to make provisions for these things in case your descendants don't want them when you write a will! OK, off my soapbox.) Here is the text: "I herd that you was sick. Joe Scott just got a letter from his brother. It stated that you was with him a guarding a bridge. I that (thought) I would like to hear from you here how you like soldierin'. I suppose you heard we got licked out of the Kanawha Valley. We was at the mouth the Kanawha about a month and we started back up the valley. We are now back at Gauley a distance of one hundred miles. the rebels retreated double quick. thay never shaod fight once we look for a hard fight at Charleston. but they heard that we was a comin' and they got up and saddled. We had a large force, but no fight. The hard fight that we had was on the tenth of Sept. at Fayetteville fifteen miles from here. Our regt. and the Ohio 57th but the rebles was too much for us we had to retreat. We retreated to Charleston and there we had another fight. We retreated to the point and was there awhile and now we are now back. If we ever have to retreat again I won't stop til I get home. every time we have had a fight we had to retreat was over powered. Snook I have begin to think that we can't whoop the rebels as easy as we thought we could. I am a geting so I don't care whether I live or die. It looks as if our Gen. did not want to fight. they will fool a long til there will be a compromise made. We have got the men if they(blank) go to work. Well I must close Snook what part country in KY where you are. Virginia where I have bin is nothing but mountains. you won't see a gentle sex but once in a month they are far and few between. I have all most forgot how to talk to one. I suppose they are more plenty in KY. ... I suppose you have heard that Miller was wounded in the fight at BULL RUN. he is at Washington he will be a cripple. ... Snook has gone to war he is in KY somewhere. Cathy -----Original Message----- From: Marco & June [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 8:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [WVFAYETT] Wild West Virginia: Radford Cemetery Hello, all: Well, I'm back from my trip to West Virginia. And I have a bone to pick with somebody: WHO ORDERED UP ALL THAT RAIN???? It started raining in the wee hours of Saturday morning and didn't let up until early Sunday morning! Now how am I supposed to clean up a cemetery in a downpour? (At least I didn't have to worry about snakes. They had all drowned!) My brother and I, however, are not ones to sit around moping and looking out a window saying "if only". So by early afternoon we said "What the heck...", jumped in the truck, and headed down to Mulberry. We figured we could at least take a look at the Radford Cemetery and get a good idea of what we're up against now that it's the height of summer and everything has come up. When we got to where we needed to ford the creek the first time (there are 2 crossings), we decided to park the truck as the water was rising. We figured to hike through the woods as the cemetery is on the same side (the road crosses the creek once and puts you on the opposite bank, and you cross the creek the second time to get back on the right side). We got lucky and found a pretty good deer trail, although the deer probably don't mind the occasional briar patch as much as we do (my expensive plastic rain poncho from Oak Hill's K-Mart that cost me $3 now has air conditioning). I'm happy to report our instincts were pretty good: we didn't overshoot the cemetery and end up on Laurel Creek. In fact, when we left the deer trail and came down the hillside, we came down pert near right into the cemetery. Fortunately for both my brother and I, we are not allergic to poison ivy. How green is that cemetery, and its all periwinkle and poison ivy. It was just as well anyway, because there wasn't anything we could really do in the rain (my glasses kept fogging up and I think my t-shirt got wetter from wiping my glasses on them than the rain coming through my air-conditioned poncho.) We are going to make another attempt this fall when things have died back a bit: cut the bushes/saplings/briar patch out and do some raking. Then come spring, as much as I don't want or like to use poisons in our environment, I guess we will hit the whole thing with 3-4 gallons of Roundup (if anyone has an alternative option, I'm all ears). I would like to share what my brother found to be most hilarious. We decided to walk down the road and see if we could ford the creek instead of going the woods on the way back. We come to the first return crossing and it is shallow with one somewhat narrow deeper section. My brother says "Geronimo", runs and leaps it. I say "Okey-dokey", run, leap....and land with one foot in up to my calf. Leave it to my brother to be laughing too hard to offer a hand (not that I needed one. It wasn't as deep as we thought and should have taken the truck on up the road.) Of course, the biggest laugh was the look on my aunt and uncle's faces when we showed up on their doorstep after our trek up Mulberry. I don't think they thought we were acting our age (52 and 45, me being the younger.) I'm sure after relating this story, I'll never get anyone else to go up Mulberry and help me in the cemetery. No doubt, like my aunt and uncle, you think my brother and I are probably certifiable. <LOL> Best wishes, June P.S. We also checked in on the McKinney-James Cemetery up Beards Fork. Although the loggers are very near--I will not repeat the expletive my brother uttered when we pulled off where they have torn up part of the old road leading to the cemetery--they seem to be respecting the cemetery's boundaries and leaving a fairly wide berth. ==== WVFAYETT Mailing List ==== ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    3. Hello, all: Can anyone tell me where Campbell Washington Settle, born 1839, son of Joel Dixon Settle and Mildred "Milly" Sims, is buried? Also, where his first wife Anna Elizabeth Taylor is buried? Thanks! June
