    3. Hi Everyone, I will be visiting Calhoun Co., WV in a few weeks and would be so grateful if anyone could tell me where I might research Census records for 1900-1910. Also, I am interested in finding death certificates, obituaries, etc. for the early 1900s. Is there a historical society, library, or county courthouse and what records do they have there. The address and times of operation would be much appreciated. Thank You Vicky Graham Columbus, OH

    1. Keeners
    2. I would like to obtain death certificates of my grandfather Homer Lee Keener and my grandmother Elizabeth Jane Jones Keener. I would like to know the County in which they passed away; so that, I might find the cemetery in which they were buried. For some time they lived in Braxton County but neither died there. Homer Lee probably moved the family to another nearby County to work for the B&O railroad. He was killed in an accident while working for the railroad. They both died at a very early age. Homer Lee was born in 1877 and Elizabeth Jane in 1885. Probable dates of death were between the years 1908 and 1915. Thank you for any help you can give me. Jim

    3. Eddie....Being part Irish and having grown up in Calhoun Co. I was privileged to hear a number of stories about unexplained events (ghost stories?) told by the "old folks". What you will find is that the stories are usually not told to outsiders, let alone published, lest folks think the story teller is a bit touched. The stories are usually passed down from one generation to the next, usually through the eldest child. Magazines such as Goldenseal occasionally publishes such stories but they are not restricted to Calhoun county. -- Larry Heffner Kingwood, Texas

    2. Jeff Hatfield
    3. Hi, I am searching for any information on my 3x greatgrandmother, Margaret Magdeline Halsey. She was born in 1838 (or there abouts) and died in 1884. She is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetary in Calhoun Co. She married John N.Sturm. John married three other women, each after the death of the last. I believe Margaret was his first. John was born in Barbour County and moved to Calhoun County, where he is shown in the 1870 Calhoun Census. The census shows Margaret born in WV, but I don't know where. I have checked the 1850 census records of Barbour and Randolph County, but had no luck there. Has anyone ran across this surname who may have an idea where I should look? Thanks in advance. Jeff Hatfield

    1. Barbara Wood(s) and Dudley Anderson
    2. Jeff Hatfield
    3. Hi, Since we now have so many on the list, I thought I would post one of my so-called dead ends for help. I have not had any luck on the family of my 2x great grandmother, Barbara E. Wood(s) who married Dudley D. Anderson in 1875. Dudley was born in Wetzel County but moved to the Calhoun County area (or possibly Roane or Clay Co first) sometime after 1870. I don't know if Dudley and Barbara married in Calhoun or Wetzel Co, but have not found her in any of the census of either area (I've checked 1860 Ritchie, Calhoun, Wetzel, Tyler). I have seen her name spelt both WOOD and WOODS so I don't know which is really correct. All I know about her is that she was born either in 1855 (per 1900 Calhoun Census) or 1857 (her grave marker) and died in 1923. I have that they had 8 children; Wesley, William, Charles W., George Ira, Arminda "Mindi" (my great grandmother), Garrison, Lemuel F, and Bertie L. The census states she was born in WV as were her parents. In the 1860 census, she should be listed as between 3 and 5 yrs old. Does anyone have any info on her and her line and/or could someone please check any census records for 1860 to see if her name appears. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance Jeff Hatfield

    2. Cindy Eagle Pettey
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm presently working on my Tanner line. John A. Tanner was the son of James A. Tanner born 1792-1800 in Harrison Co., VA(WV) and Nancy ?, he was born 1827-1830 in probably Wood Co., VA(WV), he was married first to Margaret Wayne(McElwain) about 1847 and divorced September 16, 1860, then he married a Jane ? This is where I need some help. Who was this Jane, and her parents, siblings, etc...? When and where were they married? Is there a marriage record/license? Where was John A. during the 1860 census? I've checked several census and have not located him.(possibly overlooked it) Also, does anyone know when and where John A. and Jane died? I need pointed in the right direction, please help. Has anyone obtained James' wife, Nancy's maiden name, also? I have ancestor information past James Tanner, whose parents were Samuel Tanner and Sudnah Elizabeth Carpenter etc...., of course there is still alot of unanswered questions here too. Any help will be appreciated, Sincerely Until Later..... Cindy Eagle Pettey

    3. Tammy, Saw your post and had to butt in. William A. SAMPSON and Mary Bell KERBY were my g grandparents. I have not proven much of the info but I will give you what I have. Crystal, as I have not yet sent you the info I promised, here is part of it. I am sorry...I guess I need to dig out the original backups and reload them...the d'base is a mess. I will print out when I do and mail you a copy. Maybe we can do some of it by email. I have the marriage date of William A. and Mary Bell as 12 Apr 1885. Unfortunately, I do not have the source of this info documented. I believe they were more than likely married in Calhoun County but it is only a belief. Parents of Mary Bell Kerby John Wesley Kerby 1831 - 1913 Ruhama STALLMAN 1841 - 1901 All I have on William A. Sampson is that his parents were Harvey Sampson and Ann ? Their son, James Howard, b. 03 Apr 1905 d. 08 Jul 1969 was my grandfather. He married my grandmother, Eva Mae NUTTER b 18 Sep 1892 d. Feb 1983. I do not know the date of marriage nor the place but believe it may have been Calhoun County. James was her 2nd husband, her first being Bruce RIGGS. Eva is buried in the Rockland Cemetery, Belpre Oh. Grandpa is buried in Parkersburg but can't remember the cemetery. They had 5 children: Everette Duane Sampson 18 May 1929 Ronzil Truseloe(w) Atlee Max 26 Feb 1933 Charles Wayne 21 Nov 1934 (my father) Mary Arlona Kathleen Sampson 1937 - 01 Oct 1953 (This date is fact as she died on my first birthday) She too is buried at Rockland Cemetery. When William Sampson died, Mary Bell Kerby Sampson married Charles Clayton Nutter b 1865 - 1943, my paternal grandmother's (Eva Mae Nutter) father. Their dom was 17 Sep 1916. This info was provided me by a lookup volunteer for Calhoun County. His first wife, Ruhama Stallman, had died (date unknown). Mary Bell and Charlie had no children. This is not much; I do have more. However, it is late and I will need to go through my databases when I am not asleep on my feet. I have some info on James Howard's siblings, mostly stuff I have been told by my father and uncles. Aunt Vesta is the only one still living and she is in Parkersburg. Her husband was Orland Buchannan. She is up there in age and is not well. They say her memory is very bad so I am really unable to get anything from her but have asked an aunt to ask her son if I can at least see the family Bible when I next go to WV. They had 1 child, Romie (not sure if son or dau). That child died young and is buried in the Hur Cemetery at Hur WV. They adopted 2, a boy and a girl. Would love to correspond.
