    1. Re: When did the "city" of Freed, WV burn down?
    2. Norma Knotts Shaffer
    3. Mike and Charlotte: I've tried to find out the date of the Freed fire, but have been unable to do so. Some time back someone wrote the library in Grantsville wanting to know the date. Several people were contacted and by best estimation it is believed that it was about 1904. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the newspaper microfilms for the same period so we have apparently "lost" that record. I collect old Calhoun photos and am trying to get them ready for the internet. I would be very interested in including any old photos you might have. I have a sample site of 100 photos on my homepage at: http://home.wirefire.com/norma I also am working with Bob Weaver on his Hur Herald webpage and have a section called Photo of the Day. Each day a new photo is uploaded and ones from prior days are placed in an Archives section. If you would be interested in looking at that site the URL is: http://www.hurherald.com If you visit these sites, an entry in the guestbooks would be much appreciated along with your comments. You might also include your question about when the fire occurred in the guestbook in the off chance that someone out there in cyberspace might have the info and get in touch with you. If you would be interested in contacting me regarding inclusion of your photos in my collection, please e-mail me and we can work out details. Thanks, Norma Knotts Shaffer Mike & Charlotte Morrison wrote: > Among some old photographs that my father-in-law handed down to me, I found a picture > of Henry and Martha Morrison in front of the Freed Post Office/General Store. 3. Among some old photographs that my father-in-law handed down to me, I found a picture of Henry and Martha Morrison in front of the Freed Post Office/General Store. My father- in-law enjoys telling that he was "born in the city of Freed, a city that was completely destroyed when the Post Office/General Store burned to the ground." Does anyone know the dates, or approximately when that building burned? I know that Martha Morrison died Oct. 8, 1925, so the demise of the "city" would have been after that date. Does anyone know when the Post Office burned and what, if anything, is on that property now? Charlotte Morrison

    1. New addition to History Section
    2. Norma Knotts Shaffer
    3. Hi Folks: Linda has just uploaded in the History section an 1893 letter which may be of genealogical significance, particularily to those who may be interested in Civil War Daniel Duskey. The letter gives the name of Daniel's wife, Patsy's, father as well as her mother's given name. Also provided are the names of Patsy's siblings and their spouses. Also provides other genealogical info as well as where some members of the family located after leaving Calhoun. The story of how the letter came to light and scanned images of the two page letter are now posted. Another new posting in the History section is "Insane" Ancestors in the Census Records. While many may feel that this information, when given in the census records, should be supressed, I personally believe that genealogies should be honest, frank, and candid. The word "insane" is nothing to be ashamed of and could have used descriptively of conditions all the way from Attention Deficit Disorder to Alzheimer's Disease to any of the many mental conditions we recognize and are able to treat today. Linda Fluharty has done this excellent article titled "Insane Ancestor in the Census Records?" that everyone should read. It is well worth taking the time. Norma Knotts Shaffer

    3. Genette & Bill: Did some checking this a.m. and find your Warren and Nancy J. enumerated in 1880 census as living in Center District. I knew of a place called Three Forks in Sherman district, but never heard of any Johnsons living there. I went by the Courthouse and inquired and the gal in the County Clerks office tells me that there is a place in Center District also referred to as Three Forks. The directions would be: Take Rt. 16 North out of Grantsville to Five Forks (that's where you start down off Pleasant Hill Ridge). At Five Forks turn left on Lavada (also called Broomstick) Rd. Travel about 1/2 mile and the road will fork. That is referred to as Three Forks. Probably was never a Post Office but is merely a descriptive location. Another person tells me that the oil & gas men in the county also refer to that place as Washboard. We have lots of those descriptive locations and sometimes they are hard to track down (have to find the old-timers). The other Three Forks is in Sherman district and accessed off U.S. 33/119 by going up a "holler" behind Harley Siers house on Bear Fork and after you go up until you are on the ridge that area is also known as Three Forks. I'm inclined to think that the one you are looking for is the one on Lavada Rd. since this couple is in Center District and that Three Forks would also be in Center District. Hope this helps - it's awfully difficult to give explicit directions to some of these places. Norma Knotts Shaffer Genette & Bill wrote: > Can anyone tell me the location of Three Forks, WV? 1. McCune family
    2. Ray Adams
    3. I am researching the McCune family that has its roots in Calhoun County. My McCune ancestor is Eliza McCune (died before 1850) who married Charles Rose (born about 1798 in Monroe or Bath Co.,VA) in 1825 in Nicholas County. Their daughter, Eliza Ann Rose, married Henry Dawson in 1861, and they were my great grandparents. I suspect that Eliza McCune is related to Peter McCune (born in Ireland in 1748, died 1832 in Calhoun County) but have been unable to make a connection. Can anyone help? Linda
