I love this question! Surely, Washington and Jefferson have been deified. When politicians invoke our "founding fathers" it sounds as if they've lumped them into one single deity. However, I think making a deity of someone is almost un-American in itself and I can't think of anyone in these latter times being spoken of in this way. During World War II, Franklin Roosevelt may have come close but no one since. In working on my genealogy, I'm struck by how many great-great-great grandfathers were named after Andrew Jackson. This makes me think perhaps our deities have enjoyed a season in the sun and then been put back in their proper place with us ordinary mortals. That's fine with me. As we've found out with Jefferson in the last decade, we all have feet of clay. I'll be very interested in the outcome of this survey. Marjolee Brady [email protected]
