I am not related to the Slayton family, but I did take a quick peek at the West Virginia death records. They are available online at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_dcsearch.aspx. I entered Slayton under "last name," and about 35 came up. The unusual name, Lehanis Slayton, caught my eye. His death record is online. I noticed that his father's name showed up as Robert Slayton, but the mother's name was Rebecca Farley. Perhaps your John was John Robert or Robert John and went by one or the other. I have seen this happen before. The census may provide additional insight for this family, if you don't already have this information. I hope that this helps a little.
