    3. I recently came across death record for James Adkins. He died 15 November 1935 while residing on Coal Mountain in Putnam County. The record indicates that he was 72 years old at time of death, giving him a birth year of about 1863. He was buried in the Roberts cemetery. His parents are listed as HAMILTON ADKINS and MALINDA RACER. The information was provided by Howard Adkins (relationship to James not given). I found the family in the 1880 Putnam County census as being in the Jefferson District of Kanawha County. The family included Hamilton (51 years), wife Melinda (45 yrs.), son Simon (20 yrs), son Jas. Hamilton (16 yrs), son Thos. Sheridan (14 yrs), son Chas. W (12 yrs), son Andrew F. (8 yrs), son Lancaster (5 yrs), son Goldsberry (2 yrs) and daughter Dora B. (1 month). Does anyone have any information on MALINDA RACER...parents..siblilngs...anything?? I would greatly appreciate any help in identifying Malinda's branch of the Racer family. Thanks, Cathy No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Version: 7.5.524 / Virus Database: 270.5.5/1570 - Release Date: 7/24/2008 6:59 AM

    3. HI Cathy... first off, this family is listed in KANAWHA Co, WV in 1880...not Putnam co. - -you had me going there for a bit ! hahah! and in the Kanawha County Family Tree Project at Rootsweb, it says that Melinda Adkins, wife of Hamilton Adkins, was born: MALINDA A. PEARSON circa 1836 in VA...and was the d/o Simon Pearson...bc 1782....you will find more on the Pearson family at that site also, but no entry for Malinda's mother. at other places it says that Simon Pearson married an Elizabeth Ellis on 26 July 1806 in Loudon Co. VA...but in the 1850 Cabell VA census it shows him as a widower: PERSON [mis-spelled!], Simon 68 MALINDA 14 Lewis 12 then in the 1860 CABELL Co. VA census: Adkins, Hamilton 26 MALINDA 24 William 8 Simon 6/12 PEARSON, SIMON 70 [listed as day labor!] Pearson, Sarah 17 so i think this gives more proof to Malinda's father being Simon Pearson, eh? Malinda Pearson married Hamilton Adkins in Cabell Co VA/ WV on Aug. 16, 1851, but her name was mis-recorded as BELINDA PIERSON!!! i did see that on the WV death certs that James Hamilton Adkins' death record listed "Racer" as his mother's last name, but i feel this was given by someone who didn't know ??? or the person recording it didn't hear the name correctly? Hope this helps a bit !
