    1. [WVCABELL] Kessler/Kessler- Hatfield/Huntington Memorial Hosptial
    2. Hi Linda, In 1904 Dr. Archibald Kenton Kessler, who had operated a private hospital at Clarksburg, WV, decided to come to Huntington to build a second institution. The result was the Kessler Hospital and Sanitarium, which was located on the southwest corner of 4th Ave. and 5th. St. The institution turned out to be the first in the city. In addition to the hospital, Dr. Kessler started a school of nursing in that same year. In 1907, fourteen women were graduated from the school. After Dr. Henry Hatfield stepped down as governor of WV in 1917, he went into partnership with Dr. Kessler at his new location built in 1910 and opening in 1911 , at 1st. St. and 6th Ave. It was also in 1917 that the main three- story building was added. The Kessler-Hatfield Hospital, which was renamed Huntington Memorial Hospital in 1928 closed in Aug. 1958. In 1928 Dr. Kessler began serving a six-year term as U.S. senator from WV and the hospital changed to an open staff as a non-profit organization. Dr Kessler was President of the board of directors at that time. Dr A. K. Kessler died 12 Apr 1944. In the late 50's the hospital was beset with financial difficulties. In 1959 the federal government moved in and sold the hospital equipment to satisfy tax claims. Dec. 1960, the hospital was sold at auction. In 1971 a shopping center occupied the land. A 1907 ad about the Kessler Hospital and Sanitarium states: 1. It’s the largest in the state 2. Accommodations for 150 patients 3. It was built for this purpose, on scientific and sanitary principles 4. Has experienced medical staff 5. A full corps of trained nurses 6. Prepared to give all forms of electrical treatment 7. Debbie Campbell of KYOWVA told me it used to be the Kessler Hospital and a photo of it was shown in the "Images of America" book, Cabell County, by James E. Casto. The photo is on p. 43 It was located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 1st Street in Huntington, WV.
