I have been unable to trace anything back before Allen E. Nelson who came from Monroe County w/ Catherine to Cabell county, but have fairly good records since then if anyone is interested.

I am not related to the Slayton family, but I did take a quick peek at the West Virginia death records. They are available online at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_dcsearch.aspx. I entered Slayton under "last name," and about 35 came up. The unusual name, Lehanis Slayton, caught my eye. His death record is online. I noticed that his father's name showed up as Robert Slayton, but the mother's name was Rebecca Farley. Perhaps your John was John Robert or Robert John and went by one or the other. I have seen this happen before. The census may provide additional insight for this family, if you don't already have this information. I hope that this helps a little.

    3. Not sure if I'm the person that you're asking about my name or not, but I did post a question last night about the Chapman/Ball line. My name is David Wallace. My mother is Elizabeth Ball Wallace, born in Milton, WV and her father was Uel Broaddus Ball descended from Charles Garrett Ball. Her mother was Bertha Jackson descended from Lewis Lincoln Jackson descended from Thomas Francis Jackson. My parents have been doing some family hunting for a bit, and I've started it in the past year. I am also looking at the Rece line as they were the maternal line for Uel Broaddus Ball, and Petit line for the maternal line of Bertha Jackson. 3. Over the years, I have discussed Nancy's ancestry with other BALL and CHAPMAN researchers. Most are convinced that she was descended from John & Jane DONOHO CHAPMAN, but none to date have provided me with anything but conjecture. I should mention that I lean toward agreeing with them, but that isn't enough for me to place her in their family. I believe that we do know two things. One she was a CHAPMAN. I believe that I saw this myself at KYOWVA in the "Lost Death Records" that Barbara BELL found. You can check with them on that. And two, she came from Culpeper Co., VA. I think that this came from the same place. If you don't find her birthplace there, rattle my cage and I will look it up for you. Tom has a good point with his reference to their naming a son Cadawalader. However, there were a number other people in the area named Cadawalader. But I am not aware of any other CHAPMANS though. I don't see your name in any of these posts. It would help me to know who I am talking to because I keep track of who is working on what family.
