William R. Heath (son of Israel Heath and his wife Elizabeth (Blue) Heath) and his wife Nancy Sanford had a firstborn son in Cabell Co VA named Nelson B. Heath, born in 1819. He stayed behind when the extended family moved on to Missouri. Nelson married into a prominent family in the area, the Porters. He married Sarah Porter on 29 March 1839. He has a somewhat tragic story as he died young, at age 34, leaving a widow and 6 children. He died at Tyler Creek, Cabell Co. VA on 21 Dec 1854. His Last Will and Testament, included in this narrative was dated 12 December 1854, just two weeks shy of his death. He must have been gravely ill and was aware he was going to die. Their six children were Joshua K (who is listed as present at death of his father), Juda A.M., John M., Eliza Druella, William B. and Sarah Elizabeth. Joshua K. died young due to injuries from the Civil War. He died in 1872. Juda A.M. died in 1861 giving birth to her first child, and the infant died as well, John M. lived to be only 17, Eliza Druella died at age 18, and William B died when he was just 20. Of the six children, only the youngest Sarah Elizabeth had a long life. She married John James Rousey. The widow of Nelson Heath, (the elder Sarah Porter Heath) was living with her youngest daughter Sarah Elizabeth in the Rousey household as late as 1870. There is one grave in the Cabell County cemetery list that is called ‘Heath Cemetery’ and in it is a lone gravestone for Robert ‘Dump’ Heath. Robert ‘Dump’ Heath was the crippled son of Nelson’s eldest son Joshua K. Heath who married Jane Ross and had two sons. This was one of them. ‘Dump’ was the nickname they called him because he was crippled. Robert ‘Dump’ Heath is buried on the property that was originally owned by Nelson Heath and Sarah Porter, his grandfather and grandmother, but was inherited by him from his grandmother. It is listed as ‘Cemetery 91-a’ in Cabell Co VA Cemeteries book by Carrie Eldridge.
Israel and Elizabeth Heath and their 3 young boys next appear in Cabell County, VA in 1808. We know this because the next child was born in Cabell County, VA in 1808. This would make them among the very first families to settle this area. Cabell County was only ‘formed’ in 1809. They may have moved here earlier than 1808. What is known is that they were here for the next 30 years and were very active. The remainder of their children were born in Cabell Co., VA: John Wesley Heath, born 24 Oct 1808 Jonas B. Heath, 1810 Stephen Preston Heath, 1812 Nancy Heath, 1814 Laura Mary ‘Laurie’ Heath, 1815 David M. Heath, 1817 Here is a timetable of what is known about the family in Cabell County, VA: 1782 August 1782, Israel Heath, through an Old Treasury Land Office Warrant was issued 15 acres in Cabell County, VA. She is the daughter of Moses McComas and Lucy Napier. 1830 1830 Federal Census for Cabell County, VA lists Israel Heath, age 57, with sons James Heath age 30, Richard B Heath age 27, Jonas Heath age 20 (all 3 sons are married by this time). 1832 Daughter Nancy Heath, age 18 marries William Burke ‘Burk’ McComas in Cabell Co. 16 Feb. 1832. He is a son of Moses McComas and Lucy Napier. 1833 Son John Wesley Heath, age 29 married Judith McComas age 27 in Cabell County, VA. She is a daughter of Moses McComas and Lucy Napier McComas. 1834 Daughter Laura Mary ‘Laurie’ Heath, age 24 married Sanders W. McComas in Cabell Co. 28 Jan 1834. He is another son of Moses McComas and Lucy Napier McComas and brother to Wm. ‘Burke’ McComas whom Nancy Heath married. 1838 Son David M. Heath, age 21, married Zetta/Letha McComas in Cabell County, VA. She is another daughter of Moses McComas and Lucy Napier. 1838 Eldest son James Heath and his family have already moved to Platte Co. MO. 1839 Firstborn Nelson B. Heath, son of William Richard and Nancy Sanford married 29 March1839 Sarah Porter. 1840 Israel Heath age 67 and family are in Platte County, Missouri. He was a farmer, stonemason and earnest Methodist. (Reference: Annals of Platte County, Mo., W.M. Paxton, 1897). Israel and Elizabeth Heath led a full and active life in Cabell County, VA. It is here they were heavily involved with the McComas family with whom they remain connected both in Cabell County and in later years in Missouri. The McComas family brought their family from Virginia to Lincoln County (same area as Cabell) and so the families may have known each other earlier as Methodists in Berkeley County before they moved. I believe the Moses McComas family were also devout Methodists as evidenced by one reference to a McComas deeding land over for one of the oldest Methodist churches in Cabell County, VA. They lived close by each other along the Guyandotte River, perhaps attended the same church services as Methodists. Five of the children of Israel Heath marry Moses McComas children during this period, all within a short space of time. All five McComas children they married were from the children of Moses McComas and his wife Lucy Napier. The McComas’s (Scottish descent) are a very large and well-known family in this part of VA. There is even today a McComas district. Moses McComas was born 1776 in VA. Lucy Napier was born 1774 in Montgomery County, VA. She married Moses McComas on Feb. 5, 1793 in Christianburg, Montgomery County, VA. Their children were: 1. Elisha McComas b. 1794 2. Dicey McComas b. 1796 3. George McComas b. 1798 4. Hiram McComas b. 1799 5. Julia McComas b. ca 1800 6. Sarah McComas b. 1801 7. Cynthia McComas b. 1802 8. Chloe McComas b. 1808 9. William Burke McComas b. 1810 10.Judith B McComas b. 1811 11. Sanders W McComas b. 1814 12. Rebecca McComas b. 1815 13. Letha Zetta McComas b. 1818 A statement made later by a descendent of Israel MComas said that Moses McComas was ‘a farmer and during the Indian War served under General Harrison.’ Moses was the son of John David McComas and Catherine Burk from VA. Moses McComas died in Platte County, MO. Lucy (Napier) McComas, his wife, died Dec 23 1849 in Jasper Co. IL. McComas/Heath Unions: All Took Place in Cabell Co VA James Heath (age 29) marries Chloe McComas (age 21) in 1829 Nancy Heath (age 18) marries William Burke ‘Burk’ McComas (age 22) in 1832 John Wesley Heath (age 29) marries Judith McComas (age 27) in 1833 Laura Mary (‘Laurie’Heath (age 24) marries Sanders W. McComas on 28 Jan 1834 David M. Heath (age 21) marries Letha/Zetta McComas (age 20) in 1838 Later on there is still another Heath/McComas union: Lucy J Heath (daughter of William R Heath) marries Sanders W. McComas, son of Nancy Heath, 1st cousins. This takes place though in Platte Co. MO much later in the story. Israel Heath and family lived very near the large Moses McComas family. There is a Heath cemetery in Cabell County, VA with only one lone grave, that of Robert 'Dump' Heath so called because he was a cripple. In 1810 Moses McComas owned ‘26 acres near the Guyandotte River’ and an additional 80 acres ‘West side of the Guyandotte’ River. Israel Heath’s land was 15 acres at the mouth of the Guyandotte River and his two sons had property in the Mud River area off the Guyandotte River. During their time in Cabell County, VA Israel Heath had children of his own born, his older children married and made them grandparents, and each census shows various combinations of family members living together or in separate households at different periods of time. Four of his sons became Methodist Ministers: John Wesley Heath, Stephen Preston Heath (ordained a Deacon in 1836) , Jonas B Heath and David M Heath ( future Heath Chapel in Benton Township, Daviess County, MO. The Heath family were abolitionists, never owning any slaves despite the fact they lived in slave states. The McComas families and Heath families were no doubt completely absorbed in each others lives with so many children and grandchildren between them. There were twenty-five grandchildren born to Israel Heath and Elizabeth Blue during their period just in Cabell County. Israel owned 15 acres “on the Guyandotte River beginning just below the mouth of Heath’s Creek at the upper end of the Narrows.” It was recorded 10 July 1815. On a map you can see Heath’s Creek and Upper Heath’s Creek clearly marked as they empty into the Guyandotte River. His eldest son James recorded a Land Office Grant for ‘50 acres on east of Mud River’ on 4 March 1836. Son Jonas B Heath recorded a Land Office Grant for ‘70 acres on straight fork of Mud River’on 16 Oct. 1837. These are areas adjacent to the Guyandotte River. Moses McComas (and other McComas’s) family owned land on the Guyandotte River as well. There is today a ‘McComas District’ in this area.
Note: Stephen Preston Heath was born in Cabell County March 2, 1812, son of Israel Heath & Elizabeth (Blue) Heath who lived at the mouth of Heath's Creek on the Guyandotte River (15 acres) Heath Shot Dead in Platte City, two other Heaths Wounded The Heath family were staunch supporters of the Union and anti- slavery. Four of them were Methodist ministers against slavery. On Sept 3, 1866 a Conservative County Convention was held in Platte City, MO (the largest city near them). It was held in a Baptist Church in Platte City to nominate candidates for the ensuing election. A majority were disenfranchised; yet, after a ‘spirited’ contest in which S.A. Gilbert led the opposition, all were permitted to vote. After the nominations were made for all the offices, the crowd adjourned to the street; and, appointing tellers, the chairman called for the candidates for one office at a time to ‘stand forth’; and, at the word, the voters took position behind their favorites respectively. In this way the nominees were very soon and very satisfactorily selected according to an account written in 1897 by W.M. Paxton in the ‘Annals of Platte County’. There was also an opposition party called ‘the Radicals’. Just 12 days after the Conservative Convention, they held a convention of their own on Sept. 15, 1866. In the afternoon after the Radical Convention had adjourned, a crowd gathered in frot of the Fleshman House. J.H. Dunagan, a Radical of ‘Herculean’ frame, got drunk, and flourished a pistol with threats. Officers interfered, but Dunagan refused to obey, and fired off his pistol. Immediately, there was a general firing of revolvers, and the crowd hastily dispersed. William Callaghan and John Heath were killed, and among the wounded were Richard Rush, J.B. Cates, J.H. Dunagan, D. Fleming, J. Foley, W.B. Heath, Sanders McComas, E.J. Phillips, Henry Rodd and Jonathan Todd. Dunagan was arrested and gave bond; but nothing was ever done. It was a battle between Conservatives and Radicals, and the former held the field. (Note: I believe the John Heath killed was the son of Stephen Preston Heath. The W.B. Heath was his brother, another son of Stephen Preston Heath. Sanders McComas was the name given to one of Nancy Heath and Burke McComas’s boys so it would have been their cousin.) The story went on further to say that the lawlessness was so bad in the city that Sanders McComas had to hide in town for three days. Others took refuge in the new iron vault in the bank not even yet in place. For a few weeks after the incidents, the community was in much awe.

Elizabeth BLUE, (b. 1763) m.1799 Israel HEATH (b.1773). According to some reports, he was born in northern England or Scotland. DAVID M. HEATH (b. 17 Oct1817-1900) married 4 Oct 1838 1. Letha/Zetta McCOMAS (1818-1847). m. 2. ‘Eliza’ Jane KERR 7 Oct 1847. He was born in Cabell Co. VA. He met and married Letha/Zetta McComas in Cabell Co. VA when both families lived there. She was a daughter of Moses McComas and Lucy (Napier) McComas. Five of the children of Israel Heath married five of the children of Moses McComas during their time in Cabell Co. VA. He was born 3 May 1818. He and Letha moved along with the other Heath and McComas family members to M) 1839-1840. He appears in the 1840 census in Platte Co MO with a ‘wife and one son’. His 1st wife Letha died at age 29 in 1847. He married again on 7 Oct 1847 Eliza Jane Kerr (1828-1898). They were married in Platte Co. MO. In 1851 at age 34 he recorded the purchase of 159 acres in Township 53, Range 34, Sect 23 in Platte Co. MO. through the ‘500,000 Acre Grant’. This was adjacent to land owned by his brother Stephen Preston Heath. At some point he moved his family to Benton Township, Daviess Co. MO. He was a Methodist minister in Benton Township and also listed himself as a farmer on the 1860 census for Daviess Co. MO. The 1874 tax list for Daviess Co has him owning 120 acres in Township 61, Range 23, Sections 3 & 4 and an additional 36 acres in Township 62, Range 29, sct. 34. Son William owned adjacent property of 60 acres in Township 62, Range 29, Sections 33 & 34. The Methodist Church at Civil Bend was organized largely through the effort of Rev. David M. Heath in 1865. Still standing is the Heath Chapel (United Methodist) and Heath Cemetery in Benton Township, Daviess Co. MO. Rev. David M. Heath was a Union soldier in the Civil War, in the same unit as his two eldest sons: Elisha and James K. All were in Company F, 11th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry. David was a 2nd Lt and Elisha was a Sergeant, James K. a 2nd Lt. A David M Heath is also listed as a Union soldier, Private in the Missouri State Militia, company G ‘discharged for disability.’ This could be the same David M Heath for it was not unusual for one enlistment to be short and there to be a second one. By his first marriage (to Letha/Zetta McComas) he was the father of the following children: Elisha B. HEATH, (b. 29 Aug 1839) Born in Cabell Co. VA m. ca 1861 Mary Elizabeth ___(b. 1839). She was born in MO. They lived in Butler Twp.,Harrison Co. MO. in 1870,1880 and 1900. Elisha served the Union during the civil War. The 1900 census indicates that Mary had 11 children, only eight living in 1900. At that time, their grandson Harvey D. HEATH (b. 1898) was living with them. Harvey was probably a son of John D. Heath who was living in Elisha’s household as a widower. The (known) children of Elisha B. and Mary Elizabeth were: Emily V. HEATH (b.ca. 1861) Sarah A. HEATH (b.ca.1863) Martha ‘Mattie’ L. LAURA MARY ‘Laurie’ HEATH (b. 1815) in Cabell Co VA. m. 28 Jan 1834 Sanders W. McCOMAS (b. 20 Jan1814-23 June1876). He was the son of Moses McComas and Lucy (Napier) McComas from Cabell Co VA. They met and married in Cabell Co VA where both families lived. Sanders was a brother of William Burke ‘Burk’ McComas who married Laura’s sister Nancy Heath. During their time in Cabell Co five of the Israel Heath children married five of the children of Moses McComas. Laura Mary died in 1847, because Sanders W. McComas went on to marry 2nd in 1847 Nancy Boydston McPIKE in Platte Co. MO. Both the Israel Heath and Moses McComas extended families moved on to Platte Co. MO 1839-1840. Sanders W. McComas who ofen just went by ‘SW ‘McComas was first in Platte Co. Mo then in 1856-1857 became one of the first settlers to Jefferson Township, Jackson Co. KS. 2nd wife Nancy Boydston McPike went with him. Her brother Nat was also found to have lived there. (Nat for Nathaniel). According to a biographical sketch contained in a book written in 1890, Sanders W. McComas was reared on his father Moses McComas’s farm (Cabell Co VA), and was in the Army during the Mormon War, moved to Platte Co MO in 1842 where he pre-empted and improved a farm upon which he lived until he moved to KS. Sanders W. McComas took an active part in politics and was frequently solicited to become a candidate for office. He was for many years Constable and Deputy Sheriff in Jefferson Township, Jackson Co. MO and held numerous township offices. His vote was given to the Democratic party. He belonged to the A.F. & A.M. (Freemasons) and to the Methodist Episcopal Church South. During his pioneer life he underwent many hardships in common with others of that class, but his house was ever open to the friendless and distressed, and newcomers found in him a hearty friend. He was noted for his generosity to the poor, and as a man of progressive ideas, interested in education and every good work, and outspoken in his opinions. He was not only self-made in a financial sense, but was also self-educated. He endured some of the trials which the ‘bloody days’ of Knsas brought to the lot of its residents and was ever ready to answer a call of duty. The children of Sanders W McComas are later to be found in Circleville, Jackson Co. KS. His son Israel married twice and had numerous children in Circleville and was still living there in 1880 and 1900 census, listed as a farmer. A biographical sketch of Israel McComas says he ‘was reared on the farm in Platte Co. Mo receiving such an educatio as could be obtained at the subscription schools in a new country, and laboring as hard as his years would allow between the terms of school. He not only helped to improve the fathers farm there, but also the one in Jackson Co KS to which his father Sanders W. McComas removed. In 1860, he went to Pike’s Peak with an ox-team, but returned in the fall of the same year, and in the following spring was united in marriage to Miss J.E. Horn, a native of Clay County, MO. Three children resulted from their union, one of them being deceased. Mildred J. is the wife of Lyman Allen of this (Jefferson) township, and Anna is still at home. The first wife of Israel (Nancy J. Horn) died in 1864. Mr. Israel McComas was again married in Feb 1866, his bride being Miss Martha E. Johnson, a native of the Buckeye state. Her father, Samuel Johnson, was born in new York and came to this county in 1861, dying the same year. This union has resulted in the birth of 7 children. Nancy is the wife of John Eaclen of Jackson county, Edna is a music teacher, Frances is the wife of F.M. Myers of Jackson Co., Hattie, Marquis (Marcus) M., Maud and Katie complete the group. Mr. Israel McComas is a Republican and much interested in the success of the party principles. He has filled the office of Jefferson Township Treasurer. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and both are among the well-esteemed members of the community. Mr. Israel McComas has made a specialty of stock-raising and feeding. He attributes his success to hard work and good management, and all who know his life concur in this opinion. ‘ Cynthia H. McComas, daughter of Sanders W. McComas formed the acquaintance of Archibald D. Abel while he was a farm laborer in Jefferson Township, Jackson Co. KS. They married 24 Oct 1867. Mr. Archibald D. Abel was born in Pulaski County, KY 31 March 1844 to Thomas Abel from North Carolina. Archibald was raised in Missouri and came to Jefferson Township, Jackson Co. KS with his parents around 1864. He acquired a very good education in the common schools and during the second year of the Civil War, when a youth of 18 yrs, enlisted in the 18th Missouri Infantry, Company K, and served until its close. He participated in the battle of Pittsburg Landing and in all the battles of the Atlanta campaign. He also accompanied Sherman on the famous ‘march to the sea’ and later was at the Grand Review in Washington, after which he received his honorable discharge 18 July 1865, being mustered out with the rank of Corporal. Cynthia H. McComas and Archibald D. Abel removed immediately after the wedding to a farm, which they owned and occupied. They labored with a mutual purpose of building up a comfortable home, and prospered. The farm property of the union embraced 234 acres in Jefferson Township, besides an additional 160 acres in Gove County. Eight children were born to Cynthia H. McComas and Archibald Abel. Louarie, Ella who became a proficient music teacher and married Henry Elliott of Jefferson Township, Thomas a schoolteacher, Sanders L., Millie, Nannie and Jesse, David S. their 2nd child died when only two years 10 mos old. Cynthia McComas and Archibald Abel were favorably known to the citizens of the region, prominently connected with the First Baptist Church at Holton KS. Mr. Abel officiated as a Trustee and takes an active part in church work. He was politically with the Republican party and served as Township Trustee for two years. His farming operations were carried on ‘in that systematic manner which seldom fails of success.’ Lucy A. McComas went on to marry James H. Baxter (his 2nd marriage) in 1873 and they had 5 children. He went on to marry 2nd Kittie Bordner. Nancy Burke McCOMAS b. 1857 d. 19 July 1936 (tombstone reads d/o Sanders and Nancy) m. 5 Sept 1889 J.C. STAUFFER (1857-1936) She is buried in Circleville Cemetery, Jackson Co. KS. We have only one clue concerning his first wife Laura Mary Heath. Her grave was never found. But Sanders W. McComas himself in later years, answered the question on the whereabouts of Laura Mary Heath: In a piece in the Holton Recorder, Thurs March 14, 1935 by Arthur G. Hurst, entitled “Early Cemetery is South of Circleville” we learn: “The first death in the community (of Circleville) was a Mrs. Brown, who lived on the place now occupied by Jim Cole. Sanders McComas picked out the cemetery and his brother-in-law Nat Boydston, gave the land. Mr. McComas’ first wife’s (that would be Laura Mary Heath) grave washed away in Missouri, hence I suppose he chose the hill overlooking what is now Circleville, and how appropriate it is.” There was a great flood of the Missouri River in 1844 when the Heath/ McComas were living in Platte Co along the river, but there were more children born before he remarried in 1847, so the exact year of Laura Mary’s death is still unknown.
NANCY HEATH (1814-1870) m. William Burke ‘Burk’ MCCOMAS (1810-1893). They were both born in Cabell Co., VA. met and married there. Known as ‘Burk’ McComas he was the son of Moses McComas and Lucy (Napier) McComas. Five of Moses McComas’s children married five of Israel Heath’s children in Cabell Co., VA before both families moved to Missouri around 1839-1840. Burke was a ‘tall person, and of powerful frame; his judgement was sound, and his influence extensive.’ On 1 May1846 Burke McComas recorded the purchase of 160 acres in Township 52-N of Platte Co., MO. This property was adjacent to the 40 acres in township 52-N recorded by James Heath, eldest son of Israel Heath. (Waldron Township, Platte Co MO) Both ‘Burk’ and Nancy (Heath) McComas are buried in the McComas Cemetery, Platte, Co. MO. His tombstone reads ‘Burk’ McComas. Nancy died first 13 July 1870 and Burke survived her by 23 yrs, died 2 Dec 1893. Several other McComas’s recorded property in adjacent Township 51, Platte Co. MO. around this time. Moses McComas recorded 29.75 acres on 1 Apr1846, Sanders W. McComas recorded 114.13 acres on 10 June1848, Hiram McComas 144.06 acres on 1 Apr1848 and a George McComas 131.52 acres on 10 Aug1848. They are all adjacent lands. These are all names of the father of William Burke ‘Burk’ McComas who was Moses McComas, and also some of his brothers. But they are also names given to William Burke ‘Burk’ McComas’s own sons. The following was found regarding a Sanders McComas in Platte Co. MO in the 1885 History of Clay and Platte Counties: Thomas B Duncan (farmer, stock-raiser and dealer) and Sanders McComas: ‘During the past year he and his partner Mr. Sanders McComas, shipped from Platte City, 110 car loads of hogs and cattles...five miles SE of Platte City is located the farm of Mr. Duncan.’ I believe this reference is to Nancy’s son Sanders who married William Richard’s daughter, Lucy J. Heath. The only other Sanders I’m aware of was the brother of Burk who was in Kansas by this time. Four of Nancy’s children served in the 39th Regiment, Infantry, Union Army in the Civil War (Pembroke, Stephen, Elisha and James). Three of the four were sent home discharged due to disability. Their children: Pembroke McCOMAS (1833-1927), m.1852 Eliza Jane KERR (1830-1908). He was a farmer near Ridgely, MO. Died in Platte Co. MO. Both buried Mt. Zion Cemetery, Edgerton, MO. He received the license of a local preacher in 1833, was admitted into the Ohio Methodist Conference in 1834; relocated in 1838 because of failure in his health; joined the Missouri Methodist Conference in 1850; relocated again in 1852, again entered the Missouri Methodist Conference in in 1853 at the suggestion of Bishop Morris; relocated the third time in 1856/57; was employed by the Presiding Elder for much of the time of his local relation to the ministry. He was admitted to the Kansas Methodist Conference in 1867, but a fall from a buggy in 1872 resulted in his complete disabiity three years later. He was ordained a Deacon by Bishop Soule in 1836 and an Elder by Bishop Morris in 1853. He was married and has left a very worthy widow. He died as triumphantly as he lived. “All is well” he said. He was ready. His ruling motive had been to live a Christian, do good, and go to heaven. His path had been one of progress. God had blessed his labors, his faith was unwavering. His dying declaration was “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses me from all unrighteousness.” Well done, toiling, suffering minister of God, thy warfare is over now. JONAS B. HEATH (1810-1840), m. 28 July1828 Margaret ‘Peggy’BARRETT. (1808-1867). He was born in Cabell Co. VA, she was born in Indiana. Margaret’s parents were Edward and Sarah (Hatfield) Barrett. Jonas and Margaret married in Cabell Co VA. While in Cabell Co VA he owned ‘70 acres on straight fork of Mud River’ via a Land Office Grant dated 16 Oct 1837. His father Israel (stonemason) owned 15 acres on the Guyandotte River beginning just below the mouth of Heaths Creek at the upper end of Narrows. His brother James owned 50 acres on ‘east of Mud River.’ Their firstborn was a girl, Louisa b.ca.1829 in Cabell Co. VA and she was followed by Calloway G. Heath was born in Cabell Co. VA on 23 Feb 1831. Just before moving to Missouri, Jonas and his family made a trip back to Indiana to visit with Margaret Barrett’s family (this was in 1838 as evidenced by the birth of one child born in Indiana and the next child born in Missouri 1840.) Jonas moved his family to Platte Co. Missouri along with his parents and other family members 1839/40. There are historical references to him as a Methodist Minister and he was referred to as Rev. Jonas Heath, believed to be a circuit minister for the Methodist Church. Jonas Heath married younger than the other children, marrying at age 18, but had an early death, living to be only 30 years old (20 Dec 1840). His wife Margaret lived another 27 years, stay in Benton Co. MO but did not remarry. Jonas B. Heath, the father died without a will. His property was inventoried for settlement on 21 Dec 1841 and most sold off by the estate administrator (James Browder) on 12 Jan 1842. Jonas owned quite a lot of property and ‘notes’ on various individuals that owed him money. A sampling: 1 yoke of oxen, 2 black/white faced steers, 1 dun cow, 1 cow and calf, 1 spotted cow, 2 red cows and 2 calves, 2 brindled heifers, 2 yearlings, six sheep, 1 bay horse, four pork hogs, 1 lot of stock hogs, 1 wagon, 1 plough, 1 lot of cooking utensils, 1 kettle, 1 lot of barrels, 2 lard stands, 1 grinding stone, 2 hoes, 1 saddle, 1 sidesaddle, 1 lot gloves and chains, 1 sifter, 1 log chain, 1 axe, 1 dun mare and colt, 1 rifle gun, 1 lot bacon, 1 silver watch, 1 watch, 1 block, 1 slate, 1 pr candle moulds, curry comb, 1 pr andirons shovel, 1 lot cupboard ware, 1 brass candlestick, 1 blowing horn and shoe polisher, 1 lot of tin ware, 6 volumes commentaries, 1 lot of books, 1 razor and shaving tools, 1 table and 10 chairs, 1 bed coverlet and sheet, 1/2 ownership of a red durham bull, 1 lot of stock corn and 1 lot of corn standing in field, 1 lot (8 barrels) corn, 1 head sheep, 1 bay colt, 1 pork hog, broad axe, iron wedge, 2 volumes of ermons, 1 trowel, 1 pr spectacles, accounts against John Rodgers, Hiram Burnard, William Bird, James Rodgers, William Blue, John Thompson and Alexander Thompson, Felix Lindsey, E.F. Bibles, books, hymn books, farm animals, guns, the silver watch and everything else was auctioned off and bought by neighbors (listed in probate). 10 Sept 1844 a Jonas Heath and brother Richard B Heath recorded a land purchase of 159.39 acres in Township 40-N, Range 22-W, Section 20 in Benton County MO. It is unclear how this came about. Perhaps RB Heath’s name was on it because this was for Jonas B the son of Jonas B the father, who had died?) . Whatver the case, this jointly owned land was in court dispute for many years after Jonas Heath (the father’s) death, with the remaining Richard Blue Heath.Jonas B Heath, the father, died in Tom Township, Benton Co. MO. A Probate Court Case Index for 1832-1920 lists his date of death as 20 Dec 1840. Final settlement for his probate was two years later Dec 1842. He served as Justice of the Peace. He and his wife Margaret and some of the children are buried in Shawnee Bend Cemetery in Benton Co. They were originally buried in Balliet/Balliette Cemetery but were moved due to a river project. The gravestone for Jonas B Heath (the father) must have been redone and date of death was misread as it is incorrect. Their children: Louisa A. Heath b.ca. 1829 married 22 Feb 1848 in Benton Co. MO to Rev. John L. BURCHARD.. In 1847 Rev. Burchard was employed as a ‘supply’ on the Buffalo Methodist circuit, which included all of the country between the Pomme de Terre and Niangua and from Buffalo to the Osage River. He met and married Louisa and married at the Heath family home, west of Warsaw. In 1860 Louisa A. (Heath) BURCHARD and her husband Rev. John L. In the 1180 census Calloway and Millie are found living in Tom, Benton Co. MO with him listed as a ‘farmer’. Three children were born in Scott, Illinois between Dec 1864-1870 so the family must hae moved to Illinois for a few years. Calloway lost his father when he was 9 yrs old, and his mother Margaret (Barrett) Heath died in MO1867 when he was about 36 yrs old. He moved to Bear Creek, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara Co. sometime after 1874. The children of Calloway and Millie Heath: Thomas Spencer Heath b. 1 Oct 1855 in Benton Co. MO. d. 22 June 1911. Heath 1846 Supreme Court of Missouri. Richard was suing for $2000 owed him by a E.H. Powers. It was settled in Richard’s favor in 1846. Richard B Heath and family moved on to Texas 1846. The next child born was born in Texas in 1846. They were living in Cass County, TX in 1850. Richard and Sarah both died at Red River, Hill County, TX and they are both buried in the Heath Cemetery, Hill Co. TX. Sarah E Jordan’s headstone reads she died 13 Feb 1877 ‘in her 67th year.’ Richard’s tombstone reads date of death as 18 July 1873. Richard was said to have been a brewmaster. A bio sketch of Richard Blue Heath’s 2nd son, John G. Heath stated the following: “John G. Heath was a farmer 3/4 of a mile from Siloam Springs, Hico Township, TX. He was born 14 Feb 1829, son of Richard B. Heath and Sarah Jordan. Richard B. (the father) dealt in (live) stock until 1836 when he moved with his family to Warsaw, Benton Co. MO. After remaining in this county for about four years he moved to Dade County, where he engaged in merchandising and farming. He lived in Dade County about 3 years and then moved to Red River County, TX. At the end of one year he left there and made his home in Cass County, TX where he remained 11 yrs engaged in farming. In 1853 he moved to Hill Co. TX where he spent the remainder of his life.” It goes on to state they had 13 children. I believe this account to have many inaccuracies as it does not match up with census records with dates, names of children given by Richard B, deeds, and other records. However it gives some good details. It goes on to say “John G. Heath, subject of this bio sketch lived on a farm in Virginia until 8 yrs old, and in 1850 went to California, where he remained for 3 yrs. In 1854 he married Sarah Kilgore, who was born in Virginia in 1839, her parents being natives of Virginia. To them were born six children: Walter (a farmer), Ada (wife of J.E. Porter, a farmer), Alice (wife of J.T. Gunter), an infant that died unnamed, William Henry and Jennie. In 1856 John G Heath moved to Bosque Co., TX and in 1863 he enlisted in the Confederate Service, and remained until the close of hostilities. He was stationed on the frontier of Texas, under command of Capt. Whiteside, Col. McCord’s regiment. In 1866 he moved with his family to Benton Co. Arkansas where he resided up to his decease, which occurred at 4pm on 15 Nov 1888, caused by Bright’s disease and consumption. There were but four or five families living on Lindsay’s Prairie when John G Heath first came to the area. He was the owner of 420 acres of land, besides town property in Siloam Springs. In politics he was a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Buchanan. He was a prominent and influential citizen, and was interested in everything pertaining to the development and prosperity of his section of the county and State.” Their children were: Daniel Webster HEATH (b.ca1824) Born in Cabell Co VA John G. For anyone researching Israel Heath and Elizabeth (Blue) Heath, I have lots of information and will share. Would love to hear from any other descendents. One of the more interesting notes about the family is that five of Israel Heath's children in Cabell married five of the children of Moses McComas and Lucy (Napier) McComas of Cabell. If anyone has any old maps (2006 back to 16??) the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society would be interested in acquiring a copy or an original of them for a new project. They need to be clear 8 1/2 x 11. Larger maps might work if they could be sized down to an 8 1/2 x 11 size and still be readable. Full size maps won't work because it will be difficult to read if sized down to 8 1/2 x 11 inches. We need maps of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Lawrence, Meigs, Athens, Washington and any other counties in Ohio. We would also be interested in maps from West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina or any of the New England States. Other states would also be helpful because many people traveled down the river and overland to the west, especially Illinois, Indiana and onward west. These maps can be new or old, preferably old ones so we can trace migration routes. The Ohio River and Kanawha River maps would also be good. JUST REMEMBER, THESE MAPS WILL BE ON A 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper and they will be black and white, gray tones. THEY WILL NEED TO BE CLEAR AND SIZED TO WORK. If interested in helping in this map project send a copy, not an email, CD or floppy but a printed copy or an original map to: The Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society at 412 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631. This is just another project to help researcher in and around the Gallia County, Ohio area. If you would like more information on this project contact the society office at 740-446-7200 or you can email me privately. Marjorie L.
