Nancy it has been my experience and stated by reference librarian in the past that the city directory was printed the year before publication. In some everyone was listed whether they had a phone or not. Can someone tell me when the data for the city directories was actually collected? Would it have been sometime during the months/year preceding the actual printing? Or was the info collected the same year as the printing of the directory and the directory was actually printed later in that year? This info is no doubt somewhere in the directories, but I’ve just not located it. Thanks for this information. The relative I referred to died from ovarian cancer which made me wonder if perhaps this was a specialty clinic, perhaps Dr. Rowley was an ob-gyn and/or had a special interest in cancer, or then again, his clinic could have been a general medical/surgical clinic. So I take it that Dr. Rowley must have closed his clinic and then became the Chief of Staff at St. Mary’s. Appreciate your help. I have worked with another person on the Chapman lines for years. Between the two of us I believe we have most of the Cabell County Chapman families straightened out. Of course, there are those that we cannot find where or from whom they came. My friend has worked on this longer than I but we are both very picky and like multiple sources. Sometimes there are no sources so we get stuck. I haven't worked on Philemon for about 20 years and will try to locate my old notes. I have 3 Chapman lines in my family.....whats one more going to hurt! lol I believe he might be connected to one of my existing lines. Some times I wish I had never heard the name Chapman and just have to get away from those files for awhile. ----- Original Message ----- From: marsha moses<mailto:mosesm@earthlink.net> To: wvcabell@rootsweb.com<mailto:wvcabell@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 15, 2019 10:39 AM Subject: [WVCABELL] Chapman in the Cabell County area Yes, the Chapman line is a brick wall for me as well. It's nice to be able to find what has happened to so many of the old buildings in Huntington in JAMES E. CASTO's Lost Huntington series. It gives a brief history of these buildings that we took for granted would be there forever and gives an update. Now if he could just trace a few ancestors fo me I'd be a happy camper! Marsha, my family married with the Holderby family a few times. HUNTINGTON - Built in 1891, Holderby School was the oldest still-standing school structure in Cabell County when it fell to the wrecker's ball in 1999. The red brick school at 620 20th St. was named for the Holderby family. The Holderbys were early settlers and Holderby's Landing on the Ohio River was a well-known spot on the local landscape long before railroad tycoon Collis P. Huntington came along to found his new town. Holderby was solely an elementary school until 1933, when the Huntington and Cabell County school systems merged and the new merged system established its offices in the school building. For more than 20 years, the school system offices were located on the first floor while the second floor was still used for classes. Around 1957, the school system took over the entire building. In 1999, the school board sold the building to the adjacent University Courtyard apartment complex which demolished it to make room for constructing additional apartment units.
620 20th St., Htgn, WV.I have found nothing to indicate it was more than an elementary school.

Can anyone provide me with information on Rowley Clinic in Huntington, such as how long it was in existence, where it was located, etc? A relative died there in 1942. I came up empty with a google search. Thanks for assistance, Nancy Edwards
Was Holderby School an elementary, jr. high or high school? Does anyone know specifically where it was located and how long it was in existence? Thank you, Nancy Edwards
To add to the emails posted over the past couple days after I inquired about a Central Junior High School, its location, etc., I have today found another relative in the 1920 Huntington City Directory, and she is listed as a teacher at Central Junior High School. So here I have two relatives teaching at this school, one in 1932 (per that City Directory) and one in 1920 (per that directory). This gives me a partial answer to the question I had regarding how long the school was in existence, but It certainly could have been longer. If anyone knows, I’d appreciate the info. Both directory listings have “Central Junior HIgh School” and not Central High School. One lister, bobperdue, replied that West Junior High School was “sometime referred to as Central Jr. High School”. How long did West Junior High School exist? Does it seem that if West Jr. High School was the official name that this would be the listing in the directories rather than “Central Jr. High School”? So I’m still curious as to whether there was another school officially named Central Jr. High School in existence between 1920 and 1932 and possibly longer, and if so, where was it located. Thanks so much, Nancy Edwards
This adds to what I’ve gathered since posting my query. So the only Central Jr. High School, I gather, was the one in an earlier post to the list about West Jr. High School sometimes being called Central Jr. High School. The 1932 City Directory has my relative teaching at “Central Jr. HIgh School”. So that’s the only one in 1932? - Nancy > On Apr 5, 2019, at 11:54 AM, BILLY TUCKER <reuben5@comcast.net> wrote: > > From "Lost Huntington - Oley Elemetary; "Oley elementary erected in 1888 and named after Gen. There was that Central-Huntington High connection that was vaguely in the back of my mind, but I don’t know where I heard or read it. The poster, bobperdue, described a West Junior High School that was sometimes referred to as Central Jr. HIgh School. So are we talking about two different schools here with “Central” in the name - a junior high school and a high school that eventually became the old Huntington High School? >> >> Thank you. >> >> - Nancy Edwards >> >>> On Apr 4, 2019, at 11:24 PM, BILLY TUCKER <reuben5@comcast.net> wrote: >>> >>> There was a Central High School which later became Oley Junior High School (14th St & 5th Ave) .
