    1. Re: Pioneer Gardners
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: GARDNER, GULLET, EDGINGTON, KIRKPATRICK, McBRIDE, ORR, RALSTON, VAUHN, & WEIR Classification: Deed Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FCC.2ACE/1942.1 Message Board Post: Thomas, Your query on William Gardner and Half Moon caught my eye. Years ago while browsing through some microfilm of Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH newspapers, (at the Schiappa Library, Steubenville, OH) - I ran across a very interesting article of the passing of an well respected and early pioneer Gardener who lived in Kings Creek area. The time period of the article was in the 1880s. Unfortunately, I don't remember his given name or the year. Have always regretted not copying that article as I live in Weirton (both in Brooke & Hancock counties) and that article contained early Gardener generations and their pioneer settlement in our area. So many of these pioneers are lost in time. This would be a "must have document" for any Gardner researcher. While Weirton lacks early newspapers - microfilm newspapers for Steubenville begin in 1809 and features genealogical information on many residents into western PA, panhandle of WV, as well as touching counties of Jefferson, OH as! many were related to citizens in Steubenville. But the really detailed information from the surrounding counties begins in the 1880s with special little weekly articles. You would find Eldersville, PA or New Cumberland, or Wellsburg (Charleston) VA/WV community reports as to who was traveling to visit an elderly aunt, trip to the World's Fair, or a humorous and recent fishing trip by a local resident. A few years ago two individuals have abstracted names from 1809 - 1900 newspapers with the hopes of preparing an index to help researchers. Hopefully someday these will be in print or on-line for all to share and enjoy and you might find that GARDNER article with ease. As for Half Moon farm - . I don't see GARDNER in the early deeds unless he obtained the land at a much later date. That area of 800 acres belonged to (my ancestor) Thomas EDGINGTON from 1782 and was passed to his son Jesse EDGINGTON (obit - http://krutillaja.home.comcast.net/JEdgingtonObit.htm). Click here: http://krutillaja.home.comcast.net/GEdgingtonFamily.htm for info on this family that settled on Half Moon in 1778. After Jesse's death in 1866 - these are the abstracted deed transactions for that farm: Brooke Co.,VA/WV Inventory BK#7 - Harmon Creek farm, 29Aug1866 $5,207.55, $4,953.50, $2,622.30; Cove Farm 124 acres of Thomas EDGINGTON to Samuel ORR, Ezekiel GULLET $9,702.82; and 93 acres to Samuel VAUHN & James McBRIDE $5,631.34, 217 acres to Wm. KIRKPATRICK $17,637.75 Many of these surnames still have streets named after them - GULLET, ORR for example. For some reason I keep thinking the early GARDNERs lived nearer the PA line and near the current Weirton Medical Center at the Colliers Exit in Weirton, WV. (Don't quote me on this - as I see the name associated with property on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue in Weirton, WV and adjoining the extensive land of the RALTSONs along Kings Creek. And I believe the GARDNERs owned hundreds of acres of land as well right after 1800. Perhaps a RALSTON researcher can check their deeds for confirmation on this. There is also a Gardner Avenue connecting to this Colliers Exit - you might check Map Quest for the actual location. Love seeing those old pioneer names posted, as everyone thinks Weirton formed with E. T. WEIR's Steel Mill after 1900. Wishing you new found ancestor, Julia A.
